Page35of44is suggested that further research be conducted on how theseinternationalisation activities could impact on CSR practices of Nigerianfirms. It will be also worthwhile to examine if CSR activities in Nigeriaare sources or outcomes of corporate performance and to extend thestudy to other sectors of the Nigerian economy. For other types of modern firms in Nigeria such as the multinationalcorporations and indigenous firms that are modelled on the western(post-colonial) notion of the firm, their relationship with the society isagain, influenced by the process by which the Nigerian economy gotintegrated into the world economy as the history of the modern firm inNigeria reveals. Hence, given the colonial origins of the modernNigeria firms, it is only natural to imagine that the formulation of CSRin theory and practices should retain significant colonial undertones.Competition between foreign multinationals and local firms is still asstiff as ever in some sectors especially oil/gas and telecoms. Finally, like the colonial state, foreign firms and the local ones modelled afterthem are not embedded within the society and culture. It is thereforenot surprising that such firms should largely view the larger society asan arena for philanthropy.
