Damascus University Journal, Vol.28 No.1, 2012Sabbar S. Sultanto come <strong>and</strong> see me! You are Joseph, <strong>the</strong> dreamer <strong>of</strong> dreams ,dear <strong>Jude</strong>. And a tragic Don Quixote. And sometimes you areSt. Stephen, who, while <strong>the</strong>y were storm<strong>in</strong>g him, could seeHeaven opened. O my poor friend <strong>and</strong> comrade, you'll sufferyet. (p.244)In all <strong>the</strong>se affairs, <strong>Jude</strong> is far from obscure: he appears to be totallyhelpless <strong>and</strong> passive. The author has not exerted much effort to show hischallenges <strong>and</strong> sacrifices for his orig<strong>in</strong>al ambition, that <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g adist<strong>in</strong>guished scholar. <strong>Jude</strong> is content to quote Shelley's l<strong>in</strong>es which<strong>in</strong>directly comment on his pitiable situation,There was a Be<strong>in</strong>g who my spirit <strong>of</strong>tMet on its visioned w<strong>and</strong>er<strong>in</strong>gs far a lot,A seraph <strong>of</strong> Heaven, too gentle to be human,Veil<strong>in</strong>g beneath that radiant form <strong>of</strong> woman.(p.292)Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, once <strong>Jude</strong>'s 'obscurity' is stripped from its ontological <strong>and</strong>philosophical mean<strong>in</strong>gs, noth<strong>in</strong>g obscure rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> his character. It istrue that he rema<strong>in</strong>s all his life <strong>the</strong> unknown 'stone- mason', only <strong>the</strong> poorrustic people know. But his position which he loa<strong>the</strong>s does not undergoany radical change due to his <strong>in</strong>ertia <strong>and</strong> passivity. Instead <strong>of</strong> committ<strong>in</strong>gitself to a deep <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>tricate <strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>of</strong> his psychological drives, <strong>the</strong>book is content to develop those <strong>of</strong> Sue, <strong>the</strong> Yang <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> novel. What ischaracteristic about <strong>the</strong> book is that it is <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs who play <strong>the</strong> game <strong>of</strong>hide-<strong>and</strong>-seek with him <strong>and</strong> he is <strong>of</strong>ten left as <strong>the</strong> underdog, unable tograsp or figure out what is go<strong>in</strong>g on. It is through <strong>the</strong>se deal<strong>in</strong>gs with Suethat <strong>Jude</strong> realizes <strong>the</strong> extent <strong>of</strong> evil <strong>and</strong> harm that o<strong>the</strong>rs can <strong>in</strong>flict on hislife <strong>and</strong> play havoc <strong>in</strong> it. Also he perceives much about himself as he iscaught <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> whirlw<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> events: his pa<strong>the</strong>tic failure to cope with <strong>the</strong>changes imperceptibly tak<strong>in</strong>g place <strong>in</strong> people's consciousness <strong>and</strong>underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g.Much has been said about <strong>the</strong> vague <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>compatible conflicts <strong>and</strong>drives smolder<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Sue's ego which eventually qualify her to be <strong>the</strong>'obscure' agent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> book.
