Patricroft Bridge Baseline ReportLiverpool Road Corridor Strategy 2007-2017Salford City Council have developed a 10 year strategyto deliver and sustain the economic future of LiverpoolRoad between Eccles and Cadishead. Liverpool Roadis an important arterial route which is currently notperforming to its full potential.The key issues comprise the poor state of itsenvironment, physical image and public realm, the focuson low value economic activity (increasing number oftakeways), declining trade, lack of any defined centresworth stopping at, lack of parking, traffic congestion,noise, pollution and crime.Corridor wide priorities for action include:■■■■■■Developing public and private sector partnershipsfor regenerationMaximise the potential of local assets which helpcreate a sense of place, such as Bridgewater MillImproving the public realm (shop front andstreetscene improvements)Creating a green environment (there is limitedlandscaping and greenery to soften the harshfrontage)Strengthening the housing marketSustainable retail development concentratedin the designated neighbourhood centres with■■■appropriate infrastructure, parking etcConsider opportunities to create niche hub/zones(e.g. community use/restaurant areasDeveloping key employment sitesReducing traffic congestionIndividual action plans have been prepared for the 5sections of Liverpool Road. The Patricroft Bridge studyarea is within the Peel Green section.The strategy identifies this section as having the greatestpotential for transformation, in particular the waterfrontlocation which is greatly under-utilised. Key actionsare:■■■■■Patricroft Waterside at junction of the BridgewaterCanal, Liverpool Road and Barton Road haspotential to act as a catalyst for the widerregeneration of the corridor. The canalsideredevelopment could provide for e.g. watersidecafes, bars and restaurants, alongside residentialand business useBridgewater Mill showing potential to provide ananchor point of a larger redevelopment scheme.Address low quality industrial premises andenvironmentCreate a greener environmentPromote industrial heritage, e.g. the location ofJames Nasmyth’s steam hammer in the vicinity ofthe Mill■■■■Consolidation of retail into designated centre atNew LaneDeveloping key employment sites such as BartonBusiness ParkCreating alternative transport modes by takingadvantage of the close proximity of PatricroftRailway Station, which provides links toManchester Victoria and Liverpool Lime Street.Improve services and promotion of route.Improve the environmental quality andaccessibility of Patricroft railway station to make itmore appealing to users.The strategy flagged up Patricroft Bridge as a keyfocal point for local residents, creeping derelictionand vacancy but also offering some real regenerationopportunities based around transport linkages, the canaland a desire from the local community and stakeholdersfor its redevelopment.
