APPENDIX ii OTHER TOOLS TO SUPPORT FAMILY PRACTICE IN BC
achieving this goal, these stakeholders engaged the UBC Faculty of Medicine, Division
of Continuing Professional Development and Knowledge Translation, to develop a
software system that will facilitate the authoring, editing, updating, approving, and
releasing of guideline content by designated content editors, and for making up-todate
guideline content available for browsing and searching on physicians’ PDAs. The
stakeholders worked collaboratively to create a common platform that is accessible
and effective for all physicians.
The CliniPearls application is designed to assist physicians by providing:
• real-time access to condensed and usable chronic disease and cancer
information modules
• the ability to access clinical reference data at the point-of-care
• automatic updating of content via the Internet to give physicians the
assurance that the reference tool they are using always delivers the most
current guideline information available
• secure web access to allow non-PDA users to subscribe to and access
condensed clinical content
Modules are currently available for asthma, breast cancer, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, depression, diabetes, heart failure,
hepatitis B and C, hypertension, and palliative care. Additional modules are expected
to be developed over the next 12 months. UBC CPD-KT anticipates making this
software available to BC physicians free of charge over the coming months. For
more information about this software, please contact Céline Cressman, Technology
Coordinator, at celine@cpdkt.ubc.ca.
G. GPSC CHANGE MANAGEMENT PACKAGES
Part of this practice support program is to offer access to information on a number
of change management packages that have been developed by GPSC. Funding is
available to implement packages that individual general practitioners may choose to
try in their office. Break-out sessions are available as a part of the program on:
• Managing Chronic Diseases in the Office
• Recall Systems
• Advanced Access
• Introducing Group Visits – meetings of several patients with a facilitator/
speaker who may not be a physician. FFS office visits are billable if the physician
takes each patient aside separately to review their management and any
concerns if medically required. GPs may be contracted by their Health Authority
on an APP basis if not appropriate for FFS
