''^PERFORMANCES AND IMITATIONS. 349In the following year appeared " Das Labyrinth,oder der Kampf der Elemente," announced as a continuationof the " Zauberflöte," by Schikaneder and Winter"^^;it was performed in Berlin with great magnificence in 1806.''^Goethe's design of continuing the "Zauberflöte" has beenalready mentioned (Vol. III., p. 314, note). It would besuperfluous to enumerate the performances of the "Zauberflöte" in Germany. It soon took possession of every stagein Vienna. In 1801 it was given at the Kärnthnerthortheaterwith new scenery by Sacchetti.''^ Schikaneder was not mentioned,which gave rise to some coarse pamphlets in doggerelverse.'^^ Schikaneder's answer was a brilliantly appointedperformance of the " Zauberflöte " in his new theatre Ander Wien, which he recommended to the public in somedoggerel lines as Papageno, not failing also to parody thedefective machinery of the other theatre. '^^ The run wasextraordinary,'^'^ but he had taken so many liberties with thework—omitting the quintet, for instance, and inserting an airfor Mdlle. Wittmann—that he did not escape criticism inmore doggerel verses.'^^From Vienna the opera spread rapidly to every theatre inGermany, great and small.'^^ In Berlin it was first given onMay 12, 1794, with a success^^that testified to the preferencefor German rather than Italian opera there ;^^this performance was celebrated on May 12,the jubilee of1844.^^" A.
