;süssmayr's work. 363He had not set himself, however, to compose the Requiemstraight through, but had thrown off different parts of itaccording to the mood he happened to be in. Thus beforethe Dies irse was finished he had composed the Offertorium,of which the two movements, Domine Jesu Christe andHostias, were left virtually complete in the same state asthose mentioned above. It will now be understood how Mozart, going through thescore, either at the piano or the desk with his pupil Siissmayr, would discuss the various points of the instrumentation, would encourage him to make suggestions, and explainhis own ideas and intentions, so that Siissmayr would inmany respects have formed a lively image in his mind ofwhat the completed score would be, and would often be ablefaithfully to reproduce Mozart's own intentions. Of theremaining movements, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei,there were no such sketches in existence.Siissmayer's first care was to copy out all that Mozarthad left imperfect, "that there might not be two handwritingstogether," as the widow wrote to Andre (Cäcilia,VI., p. 202)—she must have had Eybler's promised completionin her mind—and then to fill in the instrumentationaccording to Mozart's apparent design. The remaining sheets (33-45) containing the Lacrimosa,Domine, and Hostias, belonged to Eybler, whopresented them to the same library. That Mozart hadcontemplated carrying them out, and uniting them into onescore with the Requiem and Kyrie is proved by the continuousnumbering of the pages in his own handwritingthere is no instance to be found of his having recopied ascore so sketched out when filling itin.^ß An accurate copy of these sheets by Mozart was published by Andre in182g, with the title :" Partitur des Dies irae welche Abbe Stadler bald nachMozart's Tode für sich copirt hatte,—Hostias von W. A. Mozart's Requiem, sowie solche Mozart eigenhändig geschrieben und Abbe Stadler in genauer Ueber-
