The Milestone HotelLondon, UKThis was my first encounter with “English Heritage” organization that protects historic Buildings –or as they call them “Listed Buildings”. I also worked closely with the Victorian and EdwardianSocieties because the building was designed partly in Victorian Style and partly Edwardian Style.It had been the residence of the famous bachelor Sir Walter Raleigh facing Kensington Palacewhere HRH Prince Charles and Princess Diana resided.I converted the building into a 50 rooms and suite luxury hotel. I did the Preliminary Design andDesign Development at my office in Kuwait and the execution drawings were prepared by a localoffice. I had to make a very large model scale 1:50 to get the approval of English Heritagebecause it was hard for them to understand the drawings – the windows were located at differentelevations that forced me to have lots of stairs to give access to many of the rooms. I discoveredthe existence of the “party walls”, the “rights of light” ,etc. It was a total nightmare but at the end Iwas totally satisfied with the result and proud to say that the Hotel continues to be a success andenjoys a very good reputation.
