BREAST CARE CENTERKING FAISAL SPECIALIST HOSPITAL AND RESEARCH CENTERRiyadh, KSAOur office was commissioned with the design of the Breast Care Center at the prestigious KingFaisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSH)I was very familiar with the Hospital during the time when I was a resident in Saudi Arabia justbefore I joined Kenzo Tange’s Office in Paris in 1978 – I furnished their offices.I was asked by Mr. Paul Tange to go to Riyadh and negotiate the contract and obtain all thenecessary information that was needed for the architectural design.I found out that there was no information whatsoever, therefore, we requested the preparation ofa site survey, geotechnical report, traffic studies, environmental studies, etc. We appointed aHospital Consultant with whom I worked very closely in structuring the space Program. Duringthe programming phase, we interviewed the administration of the hospital, doctors, the headnurses and the Cancerologists that were going to operate the Center. Most of the women that were diagnosed with Breast Cancer found out at a very late stage mainlybecause they were afraid to get diagnosed earlier or get regular check ups – Therefore we had tocreate a cozy and inviting environment, like a 5 star hotel where the women would feel at ease totalk to their doctors and get either diagnosed , treated or undergo surgery.I was given the task to work with the Hospital Consultant and do the overall internal planning .We worked with our Hospital Planner in Tokyo with whom we had worked in the past for a numberof hospitals designed by the Firm in Japan and other Countries.
