The Seine Rive Gauche Project was a proposal for theredevelopment of the 13 th district of Paris on the left bank of theSeine River. The 130 ha. site centered alongside a strip ofFrance’s National Railway extending South from Austerlitz trainstation, was officially designated as an Improvement District ofthe City of Paris. Our proposal for this project includes anextremely detailed plan for the 30 hectare area immediatelysurrounding the Austerlitz station. This area is crucial to thesuccessful development of the entire district. The purpose wasto extend the 13 th district to the banks of the Seine River overthe railways by creating a large platform on top of whichbuildings and avenues would be built. From a historical standpoint, Paris has been steadily developingin a westward direction. There is a trend towards stagnationand decline which can be seen in many eastern districts. In thewestern section, of the City, a series of monumental structuresare located along magnificent city axis extending directly fromthe Louvre Museum to La Defense area. This axis has servedas an armature encouraging further city development.Unfortunately, there is no present city structure fosteringdevelopment in the eastern section of the city known as the Leftbank. Our project proposes the construction of a grand axiscreating a new urban creating a new development armaturealong the left bank of the Seine , this will complement theLouvre Museum, la Defense Axis and the Right Bank. The twoaxis intercept at the Paris City Hall!We proposed to remove the old Station that had no historicsignificance by creating a large pedestrian Plaza butunfortunately many people thought otherwise! A huge historicopportunity was missed !
