We also worked with a hospital consultant who happens to be a surgeon and architect with hishead office in Beirut, Lebanon. The communication with him was extremely efficient and hewould travel often to Riyadh and meet with the technical office of the Hospital to get thenecessary feed backs on our proposed plans.We made several alternative schemes and after 2 years we were able to come out with afunctional scheme that satisfied the ultimate users and the administration of the Hospital.We also worked closely with John Hopkins Hospital on the planning, needs and equipment thatwould be needed.I went to Tokyo to work on the design of the Facades and we presented 2 schemes. The oneillustrated here shows a sort of a Veil covering the building because we found out that the roomson the periphery of the building had different requirements in terms of natural lighting andventilation. Therefore we needed a strong element that would create a harmonious façade andalso assure the necessary privacy to the patient wards. The veil was made out of metal tubesand the form was very playful.Later on the Hospital decided that this center would take valuable land that was scarce within thelimits of the Hospital and that there was more of a need for a comprehensive Cancer Center toaddress all forms of Cancer – therefore the project was shelved and design proposals are beingmade for the New Comprehensive Cancer Center.
