God’s Order for Quality BelieversLet no man judge you under the Old Testa-ment law because you are not under that OldTestament law; you are in the Body of Christduring the Age of Grace. The Old Testament lawwas only a shadow of the greater law of the spiritof life in Christ Jesus, which is now in effect.Similarly, Colossians 2:14 says, “Blotting outthe handwriting of ordinances that was againstus, which was contrary to us, and took it out ofthe way, nailing it to his (Jesus Christ’s] cross.”Jesus Christ who knew no sin became sin for usso we could become the righteousness of God inhim. He paid our debts, and then God went astep better and blotted them out. He completelyexpunged, or erased, those things that wereagainst us because Jesus Christ paid the price onthe cross. Therefore, there is no record of thecharges against us, only that all debts have beenpaid. Jesus Christ took the reproach which wasagainst us. It was nailed to his cross. Isaiah 53:6says, “All we like sheep have gone astray; wehave turned every one to his own way; and (but]the Lord hath laid on him [Jesus Christ] the iniquityof us all.”Colossians 2:15:And having spoiled [apekduomai] principalitiesand powers, he made a shew of themopenly, triumphing over them in it.This Greek word for “spoiled” means “havingput off from himself,” what he bore for us.He who knew no sin became sin for us. Then heput off from himself (spoiled) the sins, whichwere the principalities and powers. And he made282Quickened Together with Christa show of the principalities and powers openly, triumphing over them when God raised him fromthe dead.*Now comes more important information forbelievers to bear in mind.Verses 16 and 17:Let no man therefore judge you in meat, orin drink, or in respect of an holyday, or ofthe new moon, or of the sabbath days:Which are a shadow of things to come; butthe body is of Christ.Verse 18:Let no man beguile you of your reward in avoluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath notseen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind.*Ephesians 4:8: “Wherefore he saith, When he ascendedup on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts untomen.”283
God’s Order for Quality BelieversQuickened Together with Christ“Let no man beguile you. . . .” The wordswill be very strong in some other area; we com-“beguile you” mean “defraud you.” Salvationplement and support each other. That is beingis of grace and reward is of merit. Don’t letknit together. It takes all the parts of the Body, anyone cheat you of your prize by involving youeach carrying out its unique function, to makein his religious rituals, putting you under the the Body function properly. I Corinthians 12:21tradition of men, and feeling proud of it, vainlyexpresses this image so clearly: “And the eyepuffed up.cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee:nor again the head to the feet, I have no need ofyou.” Somebody has to be an eye, someone elsea wrist, a thumb, or an index finger. What wouldhappen if we were all the same part of the Body?Verse 19:And not holding [fast] the Head [Who is thehead? Jesus Christ.], from which all thebody by joints and bands [bonding, puttingtogether] having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increaseof God.Members act in different and varied capacitiesin the Body. But each is only a part of that Body, and each must do his job to the best of his abilityso that the whole Body can function effectively. If anybody does not function in his calling, theBody as a unit is hurt. Every member in par-ticular is important. And when each member isThe expression “knit together” in verse 2 ofColossians 2—”hearts might be comforted, beingknit together in love”-is repeated here. Weare to hold fast to the head, knowing that thewhole body, having nourishment ministered bythe bonded joints, increases. We minister God’sWord to each other and thus the Body of Christis nourished and grows. Every believer is part ofthat Body, and each of us goes forth to minister.Having received nourishment, we are knit togetherin the Body with every joint bonded togetherand contributing. One believer will be verystrong in one area of practice, and another oneI may never particularly appreciate my fingersuntil one of them is sore. It’s remarkable thatwhen I hit my thumb with a hammer, my wholebody feels the shock. Before hitting and irritatingit, I’m not even conscious that I have a thumb. And it doesn’t hurt for just that moment, but forsome time following. The Body of Christ is likethat. If one member is hurt, we all hurt. All theparts in the spiritual Body are interdependentjust as in the physical body.284 285
