Regional JetUntil very recently there was aBombardier CRJ-200 CanadairRegional Jet visiting KatowiceAirport in Pyrzowice every singleday of the year. It was this typeof aircraft which Lufthansa usedto operate connections to Düsseldorfand Frankfurt.This aircraft is based on theconstruction of the CanadairChallenger and the aircraft wasbought at the project stage fromLearJet in 1976. The virgin flightof the prototype to the entireCRJ series – the 100 model – tookplace on 10 May, 1991, and twoyears later, the first machineswere delivered to airlines.The CRJ-200 is a more developedversion of its predecessor.The basic difference betweenthe two models is the fact thatit has new energy-efficient jetturbine engines. It can carry amaximum of 50 passengers and4 crew-members. The CRJ-200is available in two different versionsdepending on range andweight requirements. The ERversion has a range of approx2500km and the LR’s range is3100km. The maximum take-offweight of the CRJ-200ER is 23 t,whereas owing to its additionalfuel tanks, the LR can take oneton more at take-off.This Canadian Bombardierproduct is 26.7m long, and hasa wingspan of 21.2m. It has twoGeneral Electric CF34-3B1 turbofans,which allows the aircraftreach a cruising speed of around786 km/h (0.74Mach). With itsmanoeuvrability, it’s the ideal aircraftto operate at the more andmore often crowded airports.Bombardier has produced709 (as of 31.01.2010) CRJ-200aircraft and 27 airlines havethese aircrafts in their fleets. Theexpanded 700 and 900 modelscan take more passengers onboard:70 and 90 respectively.They also have a larger maximumrange, which for the CRJ-700LRis 3700km and the CRJ-900LR is3385km.Overall, the Bombardier CanadairRegional Jet is regarded as beinga very successful machine ensuringpassengers travel in comfort.Towards the end of March thisyear, the ‘bigger brother’ of thismachine was introduced on theKatowice-Düsseldorf route.
