Definitions <strong>and</strong> ExplanationsDurable furniture <strong>and</strong> equipmentThis includes all durable furnishings or equipment such as household appliances, pieces of furniture, household tools<strong>and</strong> transport vehicles acquired “in the last 12 months” before the survey period <strong>and</strong> intended for family use.EducationIt includes all expenses made on education (tuition <strong>and</strong> fees, lunch money, etc.) <strong>and</strong> all related services.EmployedPersons 15 years <strong>and</strong> over who worked full or part time at a job or business, <strong>and</strong> persons who worked mainly infarming or fishing during the reference period regardless of whether any of their produce was sold or not.Ethnic origin or RaceIt refers to the Person’s origin or decent, roots, heritage, or place where the person or the person’s parents or ancestorswere born. It reflected the ethnic groups(s) with which persons identified <strong>and</strong> f not necessarily the degree ofattachment or association the persons had with the particular group(s).FoodIt includes all food bought <strong>and</strong> eaten at home (or intended to be eaten later) by the household in-house during the twoweek diary. It also includes restaurant meals, plate lunch <strong>and</strong> other food bought <strong>and</strong> eaten by the household membersoutside the home like hamburgers, hotdogs, s<strong>and</strong>wich, cup of coffee, milk shakes, etc.Formal workAll persons 15 years <strong>and</strong> over at a paid job.Fuel, Light <strong>and</strong> WaterThis refers to the total expenses made on fuel, light (energy) <strong>and</strong> water during the reference period.Furniture, Equipment & AccessoriesIncludes expenses made on household furniture, equipment <strong>and</strong> accessories (see Section 3 of <strong>Survey</strong> Questionnaire).GiftsIncludes both cash <strong>and</strong> value of food <strong>and</strong> non-food items a household received from another household within oroutside FSM. It also includes gifts given away to another household. Gifts can be either an income or an expenditureof a household. It is considered an income when a household received it from another household <strong>and</strong> at the same timethe same gift can be expenditure when used or consumed. On the contrary, Gift is treaded as expenditure when thehousehold gives it away to another household, in or outside FSM.<strong>Household</strong>A household was defines as a person or group of people living together in a housing unit <strong>and</strong> sharing meals together.These people did not need to be related but as long as they shared their meals, they were considered a household.For the HIES, all persons who were usually living <strong>and</strong> staying together on June 1, 2005 in the housing unit of theselected sample households were listed as household members. Persons who were staying in the household as visitorsbut without “Usual Home Elsewhere” (UHE) were also listed.<strong>Household</strong>erThe person in whose name the home is owned, being bought or rented <strong>and</strong> who listed as persons 1 on thequestionnaire.<strong>Household</strong> expenditures<strong>Household</strong> expenditures refer to the expenses made by the household for personal consumption during the referenceperiod.
