Length of Training: One year.Goals: Both Fellows split their time between BSD and WHSD. The primaryresponsibility of clinical Fellows in BSD will be the provision of PTSD-related clinicalservices to male veterans. In addition to learning specific techniques and protocolsfor evidence-based treatments, Fellows are also provided supervision on theideographic conceptualization of cases and prioritization of treatment targets. Theprimary responsibility of clinical Fellows in WHSD will be the provision ofpsychological services to female veterans with PTSD and other trauma-relateddisorders, and consultation to other treatment providers through their work in theWHSD’s Women’s Stress Disorder Treatment Team (WSDTT). WSDTT and BSDpatients present with a range of comorbid Axis I, Axis II, and medical disorders aswell as PTSD. The Fellow will provide up to 18 hours per week of direct clinicalservice. The clinical services Fellows will provide to veterans include:• Comprehensive psychological assessments• Brief, problem-focused assessments and consultations• Short-term interventions and psychotherapy (individual and group)• Long-term psychotherapy (individual and group)By the end of the training year, Fellows will have gained mastery of multi-methodcomprehensive psychological evaluation and treatment of lifespan trauma, sexualtrauma, war-zone trauma, PTSD, and comorbid psychopathology.Teaching Methods: Clinical Fellows will be assigned a primary supervisor withinboth BSD and WHSD, with one being a designated mentor responsible for theoverall coordination of the Fellow's training experience. Both primary supervisorswill collaborate in developing the training experiences to meet the specific needs ofthe Fellows, and will provide clinical supervision. Fellows will work with at least oneadditional clinical supervisor in each Division, including group co-therapists. Inaddition to supervision of clinical cases, supervision will also be provided onmethods of effective consultation within a medical center. Clinical consultation withother faculty is also readily available, both formally through regular clinical teammeetings and informally. In addition to individual supervision, Fellows will also begiven the opportunity to attend group consultation for Cognitive Processing Therapy(CPT) for PTSD.At the beginning of the training year, Fellows will learn about the various ongoingresearch activities at NC-PTSD. Staff conduct research on diverse aspects oftrauma, health, and PTSD, addressing basic questions of etiology, mechanisms ofaction, and course, as well as applied questions related to assessment, prevention,and treatment outcome.
