The SATP provides specialized training in evidence-based approaches toalcohol and drug problems including motivational enhancement, cognitivebehavioralrelapse prevention techniques and behavioral self-control strategies.Training is also provided in a wide range of therapies for co-occurring disordersincluding Seeking Safety, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Acceptance andCommitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness techniques, and Dialectical BehaviorTherapy.The primary responsibilities of the clinical Fellow will be:• Assessment and consultation• Group therapy (e.g., relapse prevention, Seeking Safety, DBT)• Brief- and long-term individual psychotherapyOther training activities include:• Learning how to supervise trainees• Program evaluation and performance improvement activities• Clinical researchAt the completion of their Fellowship, Fellows will be able to:• Conduct a comprehensive assessment of veterans in treatment for alcoholand/or drug use problems;• Provide group and individual (both short- and long-term) therapy forindividuals with alcohol and drug problems;• Provide treatment for co-occurring psychiatric disorders in individuals with analcohol and/or drug problem;• Provide consultation for treatment providers in multidisciplinary settings onproblems related to alcohol and drug problems.Teaching Methods/Supervision: There are several methods of training for theclinical Fellow in the Substance Abuse Treatment Program. The Fellow will workclosely with at least two mentors and meet on a regular basis for individualsupervision. The Fellow will also meet with the clinical staff in rounds for theresidential treatment program and in outpatient team meetings. Fellows will havean opportunity to learn how to supervise other trainees under the guidance oflicensed clinical staff, and receive both group and individual “supervision ofsupervision”. Specialized readings are provided to supplement a Fellow’s trainingdepending on his or her interests and needs. The Fellow will also participate indidactic training through: a) the SATP’s monthly didactic seminar series on topicsincluding: treatment of comorbid disorders (including the use of ACT and DBT inFellowship Training Brochure | 2013 - 2014 Training Year32
