If needed, childcare is available at the Tyke Site at the Brockton Division and SmallWorld at the Jamaica Plain Division. These are nondiscriminatory, nonprofit, on-sitechildcare facilities licensed to serve children between the ages of 3 months to 6years of age.Research ActivitiesResearch is an integral part of the overall <strong>VA</strong> Boston Healthcare System’s missionand plays a key role in enhancing the healthcare services provided to our veteranpopulation. The total Research and Development Program for the three campuses,Brockton, West Roxbury and Jamaica Plain, is one of the largest and most active inthe <strong>VA</strong> system. In recent years, total intramural <strong>VA</strong> funding has been in the rangeof $15 million. Extramural research funding from other federal agencies, such asNIH and DOD, private proprietary companies, voluntary agencies and foundationshave added another $10 – 12 million per year. As a referral center for neuropsychiatricdisorders, the Brockton campus has major research efforts in theneurophysiology of mental illnesses, problems in alcoholism and sleep problemsassociated with many mental disorders. The research interests at the WestRoxbury campus, as the acute tertiary care division, spans several fields, with astrong focus on gastrointestinal disorders, cardiology and cardiovascular diseases,hematology, pulmonary medicine, urology, neurology, and spinal cord injury. Atthe Jamaica Plain campus in conjunction with the Boston Outpatient Clinic, thereare significant research projects on substance abuse, hemostasis, aphasia,language and memory disorders, PTSD, and infectious diseases, among others.Investigators at both the Brockton campus and the Jamaica Plain campus havebeen participating in a major <strong>VA</strong> cooperative studies trial on the National HealthSurvey of Persian Gulf War Veterans and their families. There are several specialemphasis programs and research centers at the <strong>VA</strong> Boston Healthcare System,including the Massachusetts Epidemiology Research and Information Center, theNormative Aging Study, the Dental Longitudinal Study, NIDA/<strong>VA</strong> MedicationDevelopment Center, and two National Centers for PTSD. As mentioned above, TheTranslational Research Center for TBI and Stress Disorders (TRACTS) is a <strong>VA</strong>Research and Development Center of Excellence mandated to advance thediagnosis and treatment of the commonly co-occurring conditions of PTSD and MildTraumatic Brain Injury in OEF/OIF Veterans. There are also several programs in thearea of Rehabilitation Research and Development and Health Services Research andDevelopment, with the <strong>VA</strong>’s HSR&D Management Decision and Research Center,located at the Jamaica Plain Campus.Fellowship Training Brochure | 2013 - 2014 Training Year44
