PR Agency Storymaker Expands to Shanghai 

The German-owned PR agency Storymaker Public Relations (Beijing) 

Co. Ltd. has now placed a representative in Shanghai. For almost five 

years the company has met the communication needs of German 

companies and institutions in China – and is now expanding its 

services in the Chinese market. Storymaker China specializes in 

brand communication in the manufacturing and technology field 

and maintains a headquarters in Beijing. The agency is now also 

represented in Shanghai. “Many German companies are based in 

Shanghai and the Yangtze Delta. We are now able to consult our 

customers in this area on a local basis,” explained Ms. Agnes Grill, 

Representative of Storymaker in Shanghai, when talking about the

Evonik Announces Opening of Advanced Project 

House in Taiwan 

Evonik Industries announced the opening of its Advanced Project 

House (APH) “Light & Electronics” in Taiwan on 15 th February. As 

the first project house established outside of Germany, the new APH 

is located in the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in 

Hsinchu, one of Taiwan's leading research institutes. The opening of 

the APH “Light & Electronics” is a new cornerstone for Evonik to enter 

into new markets and the globalization of R&D. Evonik evaluated the 

technical and market success probability of potential project topics 

ranging from lighting, displays, touch panel, photovoltaic, LEDs and 

functional coatings. With the opening of APH, several projects have 

been started up with the company’s commitment and support for 

its business units and business lines. In addition, a new business 

development function will be built up to identify new business 

opportunities in the electronics industry. The initial stages will focus 

on Taiwan, Mainland China and Korea.

In the recent 12 th Five-Year Plan, the Chinese 

government outlined China's reform process to 

build a harmonious and resource-saving society 

that strives for a balance between economic 

growth, social equality and environmental 

protection to increase its people's prosperity. 

The world’s second largest economy has to face 

a number of challenges concerning resource 

efficiency and finding new ways of supplying 

energy to its fast growing economy. In this 

context, CSR and sustainability have become 

prominent themes within China in recent years, 

with agencies ranging from the Ministry of 

Finance (e.g. guidance on establishing internal 

controls) to SASAC and the Chinese Banking 

Regulatory Commission (e.g. Green Credit Policy) 

incorporating CSR elements into new guidelines. 

For foreign companies operating in China, this 

represents a rapidly shifting landscape with 

new opportunities, but also new expectations 

and changing perceptions of the role of 

foreign companies. Mr. Sean Gilbert discussed

Viessmann Art & Design 

Exhibition 

“Embedded Creation” – Exploring 

the dialogue between corporate 

design and art 

In cooperation with the Ullens Center 

for Contemporary Art (UCCA) and 

Zcontemporary, the Chinese subsidiary of 

German heating technology manufacturer 

Viessmann initiated a pioneering art project 

to explore the dialogue between corporate 

design and art in China. The results will 

be on exhibition in Beijing’s 798 district 

at UCCA from 28 th April to 6 th May 2012. 

“Embedded Creation” brings together the 

individual artists Miika Benedetti, Ingo 

Bulla, Chen Kun, Feng Lianghong, Wendy 

Hack, Hu Qinwu, Hu Shenping, Li Gang, 

Jeffrey Stephen Miller & Thomas Schmidt 

and Yang Liming, who are specialized and 

acknowledged in various fields as ceramics, 

photography, video art, painting, sculpture 

and installation – and Viessmann heating 

systems. Cultural antipodes between West 

and East influence this endeavor and cast 

a new light on the metamorphosis of a 

technical product into an abstract piece 

of art and an original artistic idea into 

corporate design. 

A synthesis on a sustainable level 

The intercultural context reveals that values 

like quality, sustainability and reliability may 

be represented by a multitude of symbols, 

icons and forms of expression – varying due 

to divergent embedding in local cultural 

environments – but nevertheless understood 

in their underlying meaning as universal after 

all. Defining identity in all its occurrences 

is a perpetual subject of actuality and 

significance. China’s cultural tradition 

inhabits one of the world’s oldest holistic 

systems of classifying and categorizing 

phenomena of all types. This is known as the 

“Five Elements System” or 'wu xing', where 

shapes relate to colours and the elements 

wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The roots 

lie in the heritage, which may be experienced 

in the process of re-traditionalization. 

The dialogue between corporate design and 

art exposes a synthesis on a sustainable level: 

the creation of unique and distinguished 

awareness. Thus, specifically and strategically 

planned corporate design not only contributes 

to forming identity, it is pivotal for its 

strength. How you depict yourself determines 

how you are seen and experienced. 

Pioneering corporate design 

The corporate design at Viessmann originated 

in the 1960s, when conceptual artist Anton 

Stankowski laid the foundation: “Concentration 

through omission”, which was and still 

remains an essential guideline. Viessmann 

has continued its close exchange with reputable 

designers – Hans Gugelot, Karl Duschek 

and Andreas Haug to name but a few – ever 

since. As a result Viessmann heating systems 

were the first to introduce “design” and 

“colour” into the boiler room in the form of 

the new standard colour “Vitorange” – an 

entrepreneurial and avant-garde achievement 

regarding the fact that prior to that 

boilers were gray or industrial green. Today, 

the defining colours of the Viessmann product 

range are silver and orange. The first one 

reflecting clarity, quality and innovation, the 

second symbolizing warmth – uniting innovation 

and tradition. 

Corporate design and art permeate and complement 

each other being both source and 

essence. The pioneer undertaking “Embedded 

Creation” may be understood as an inspiration 

to follow, a dialogue started whose continuation 

lives in its ongoing exploration.

SIP Project Management Opens New Headquarters 

in Shanghai 

SIP Project Management officially announced the opening of its 

new Shanghai headquarters. Around 100 guests, including clients

Plant Manager of Changshu Continental Plant Gets 

Awards 

Mr. Lutz Marczinski, plant manager of the Changshu Continental 

plant, recently received several awards from the local communities in 

Jiangsu province. On 13 th January 2012, Mr. Marczinski received an 

award from the Suzhou City Municipal Office as an excellent foreign 

expert in “appreciation of his enthusiastic support for Suzhou’s 

construction and his friendly cooperation.” The Mayor of Suzhou, 

Mr. Yan, as well as the Party Secretary were present during the 

event. On 8 th December 2011, Mr. Marczinski was appointed as one 

of the Directors of the Association of Foreign Invested Enterprises 

in Jiangsu. The award ceremony took place in Nanjing and included 

representatives from 14 different countries and various companies. 

During the three-year term, Mr. Marczinski will have the chance 

for regular exchange with government representatives and business 

partners with the aim to further improve business operations in an 

assortment of business areas.

JA Solar Announces Strategic Cooperation 

Agreement with TÜV SÜD 

JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd, one of the world’s largest manufacturers 

of high-performance solar cells and solar power products, announced 

that it has signed a cooperation agreement with TÜV SÜD, one of the 

world’s leading providers of testing and certification services. Under 

the terms of the agreement, JA Solar and TÜV SÜD will cooperate on 

a range of product and system testing and certification initiatives, 

including the establishment of a [TÜV SÜD-accredited] testing 

facility at JA Solar’s headquarters in Shanghai. The two parties 

will also cooperate on drafting standards for the construction and 

assessment of solar power projects to ensure that projects comply 

with international standards for safety and efficiency. JA Solar will 

also leverage TÜV SÜD’s experience in energy conservation and green 

building to ensure that its raw materials sourcing, production and sales 

processes, as well as plant construction projects meet international 

best practice standards and are consistent with JA Solar’s longstanding 

commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen. 


Auro 3D Tour 

Sennheiser held a lecture tour on Auro 3D surround sound technology 

in the recording studios at the Beijing Film Academy on 28 th 

November, Shanghai TV Station (SMG) on 1 st December and The 

Village Studios in Guangzhou on 9 th December. The Auro 3D surround 

sound system can provide 9.1 or 10.1 channel output. Mr. Gregor 

Zielinsky, the lecturer, shared his own research experience in the 

field of Auro 3D in the past two years. It attracted a total of 150 

audience members from broadcasting stations, record companies 

and rental companies in the three stations. Mr. Marc Vincent, 

President of Sennheiser Greater China, commented, “As 3D visuals are 

gradually recognized and accepted by the public, it is the right time 

for the advent of 3D audio; our lecture tour organised at this time is

Schaeffler Forms Strategic Relationship with SMTCL 

Schaeffler Group and Shenyang Machine Tool (Group) Co. Ltd. (SMTCL) 

signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Shenyang at the end of 

2011. The two parties declared they would set up a strategic cooperation 

relationship based on the principles of mutual benefit and common 

development. According to the agreement, the Schaeffler Group 

will provide SMTCL with a full range of products, technology services 

and support in R&D, while SMTCL will provide Schaeffler with broader 

market potential and priority in selecting Schaeffler’s products. 

In the signing ceremony, Dr. Gou Jianhui, Managing Director and 

President Industrial of Schaeffler Group Greater China, said that the 

cooperation will lead to a win-win situation – the competitiveness of

FUCHS Brings on New COO 

Ms. Cathy Wu was appointed as COO of 

FUCHS CHINA on 21 st January 2012. Ms. 

Wu is in charge of Production, Purchasing, 

Logistics and Technical functions at FUCHS 

CHINA. Ms. Wu’s responsibilities have kept 

steadily increasing in the company since her 

commencement with FUCHS CHINA in 1997. 

With a loyal and dedicated 14-year working 

experience in FUCHS CHINA, she is very familiar with the corporate 

culture of FUCHS and has a total understanding of its business operations. 

The FUCHS company has been in China since 1988 and has two 

major plants supplying the Chinese market with premium grade motor 

oils, metal working fluids, mining oils, rolling oils, hydraulic oils and a 

wide range of other specialty lubricants and greases. 

Bayer Plans Further Expansion in Asia 

The Bayer Group aims to achieve a 60% increase in company sales 

in Asia by 2015. This would mean annual sales of well over EUR 

11bn by 2015. Of this figure, Greater China is planned to account 

for some EUR 6bn. At the end of 2011, Bayer Material Science’s 

new production facility for TDI was officially inaugurated - a raw 

material for the production of flexible foams at the Bayer Integrated 

Site Shanghai (BISS). The new TDI production facility with a planned 

capacity of 250,000t per year at BISS is based on a new process 

technology that reduces solvent use by some 80% compared with 

plants of a similar size that use the conventional process. It also 

lowers energy consumption by up to 60%. The use of this technology 

also enables substantial savings on operating costs and a reduction of

oughly 60,000t per year in carbon dioxide emissions. In addition, the 

new technology cuts the investment costs for large-scale plants of 

this type by around 20%. 

Alfmeier is Moving from Shanghai Pudong to 

Qingpu 

The German Automotive supplier Alfmeier, with more than 50 years of 

history, expanded to Shanghai back in 2005. Alfmeier produces plastic 

parts, components and systems in the area of fuel management, 

motor management and seating comfort. From a Representative Office 

in the beginning the company grew continuously in the trading 

business and finally started its own production in 2010. In 2011 it 

was clear that future growth could only be ensured by relocating the 

production facility to another location. The right place was found in 

the Zhangjiang High-tech Industrial Development Zone in Qingpu. The 

area for production has been more than quadrupled and now provides 

enough floor space and office areas for several more years of growth. 

The new facility began its operation on 1 st March 2012. 

Lind Opens New Bakery Café near Nanjing Road 

Lind, the hundred-year old family bakery brand from Germany, opened 

a new bakery café right in the city’s prestigious CBD in February 2012.

KCS announced the opening of an office in Tianjin, the sixth office

Virtuarch’s Sulzer Suzhou Factory Design Won 

Design Excellence Prize 

The design of the new factory and office building of Sulzer Pumps 

in Suzhou has won 1 st Prize for Suzhou Urban & Rural Construction 

Design, ‘World Architecture’ magazine announced. The factory was 

designed by Virtuarch in 2010 and beautifully combines the efficiency 

of modern industrial building with a high quality office work 

environment. The office building is designed as a transparent glass 

building with sun shading louvers outside the curtain wall to adjust 

light and save energy. With many interior courtyards, traditional 

roof cornices and its concept of working in a 3-dimensional Suzhou 

garden, the project translates traditional regional architecture into 

contemporary architecture.


Opening Ceremony of TIGER Drylac Chengdu Branch 

On 19 th November 2011, the opening ceremony of TIGER Drylac 

(Taicang) Co. Ltd. Chengdu branch was held in Fang Chen technology 

park, Xinjin county, Chengdu City. Xinjin county’s local government 

leadership, TIGER China senior leadership as well as customer 

representatives attended the ceremony. TIGER China CEO Mr. Luo

UniCredit Opens New Branch in Guangzhou 

UniCredit has received authorisation from the China Banking 

Regulatory Commission (CBRC) to transform its representative 

office in Guangzhou into a bank branch, thus joining the Shanghai 

branch and the representative office in Beijing. The new Guangzhou 

branch, in line with local regulations, will initially offer services in 

foreign currency including deposits, short, medium and long-term 

loans, factoring and discounting, trading of government bonds, 

bonds and financial securities other than shares priced in foreign 

currency, letters of credit and guarantees, domestic and international 

settlements, trading in foreign currency for itself and third parties, 

inter-banking loans, credit checks and consultation services. The new 

branch will be managed by Mr. Jonathan Lin, a Manager with lengthy

Weidmüller Receives Three Prizes During Ceremony 

The 2011 China Automation Market Research Seminar (CAMRS) and 

the Third China Automation Operation and Management Forum & 

Awarding Ceremony were held on 17 th February 2012. More than 

300 enterprises attended the nine-prize contest, including domestic 

and international enterprises in the automation field. The final 

winners were selected according to company brand image, business 

achievement, employee satisfaction, social responsibility, solution 

& benefit to the project, innovative products, channel management 

and more by the professional committee of the organiser, citizens 

and experts from the automation field. Eventually, Mr. Victor Wan,

Pullman Shanghai Skyway Awarded Official Five- 

Star Rating 

Pullman Shanghai Skyway has been awarded an official five-star 

rating by the China National Tourism Administration. On 8 th December

What is your personal and business background? 

I joined TÜV Rheinland Shanghai in 1990. It is 

now one of TÜV Rheinland’s largest overseas 

branches with almost 800 employees. When I 

started working in Shanghai, China was slowly 

opening up its doors to foreign organisations 

so I had the great opportunity to grow together 

with the company and to know a wide variety 

of departments ranging from management to 

financial administration. Throughout my career 

in TÜV Rheinland, I continued to obtain qualifications 

and successfully completed a Diploma 

in Management from CEIBS. My current responsibilities 

include monitoring and supporting the 

function of Greater China business line Systems 

and Training & Consulting services, as well as 

supporting line Administration/Procurement, 

Central Sales/Customer Service, Finance and 

Controlling, Human Resources and Marketing.

in China.

has mostly focused on the export market. Over 

recent years, we have developed more and more

domestic market will only increase with the 

further development of the Chinese economy. 

Meanwhile, the testing and certification industry 

also underwent tremendous changes. In 

our early days, we mainly provided testing and 

certification for relatively simple products. Our 

local testing procedures were solely concerned 

with product safety. Now, in line with higher 

consumer expectations, we also look at functionality, 

durability, hazardous substances and 

electromagnetic compatibility. Chinese consumers 

are also becoming more concerned with 

environmental issues and are looking to improve 

energy efficiency. As a third-party testing and 

certification body, we have to face the challenge 

of always staying one step ahead of the market.

China is the focus of the world. TÜV Rheinland

development strategy. I hope my team and I 

can tackle new challenges and create added 

value for our company in the process. We now 

have ten offices with over 2,700 employees in 

Greater China. Our strategic geographic presence 

is aimed at serving customers with the 

utmost efficiency. As long as our customers 

have the need, we will do our best to provide 

them with one-stop services. For the next few 

years of development in China, we will pay special 

attention to the energy sector and electromobility. 

The demand for services related to 

energy production and generation is growing as 

well. We have also traditionally been the leader 

in the field of photovoltaic testing, accounting 

for about 80% of all PV certificates issued in 

China. As for electro-mobility, it is not a dream 

of the future; it is already part of our business. 

At present, China in particular is playing 

a leading role in this field. Our services include 

charge system testing for electric vehicles, hybrid 

bicycles, electrical motorbikes and special 

vehicles for disabled persons, as well as the use 

of electric cars.

The second Chamber Meeting of 2012 started with a delightful 

dinner and a brief introduction of new members. In light of 

the recent EU Summit, the Chamber Meeting focused on the 

relationship between the European Union and China. Dr. Wolfgang 

Roehr, Consul General of Germany, welcomed the evening’s 

speaker, Dr. Markus Ederer. In his speech, the EU Ambassador 

provided the audience with an overview of the 14 th EU Summit 

and focused on the question of whether the relationship between 

the EU and China can be characterized as a strategic partnership 

or rather as a “marriage of convenience”. 

The dynamic relationship between these two important partners 

is carried out at multiple levels: political, cultural, and economic 

– but the latter remains the focus of the relatinoship. The EU and 

China are both experiencing important transitions which bear 

risk and uncertainty. China is facing demographic problems and 

rising inequality in its distribution of wealth. Furthermore, the 

country is approaching a once-in-a-decade leadership change. 

Meanwhile, the EU is struggling with the debt crisis and has even 

found itself in a system crisis. Nevertheless, Dr. Ederer is convinced 

that Europe will be able to overcome the crisis and even gain 

additional strength out of it. However, this year can be seen as a 

turning point in the relationship between China and the EU. The 

current economic developments have clearly demonstrated how 

far-reaching the ties between China and the EU really are. 

But, after all, what is a strategic partnership? It can be described 

as a situation where each partner needs the other to achieve 

its goals. Evidently, the strategic partnership between the EU 

and China entails many rights as well as obligations. China, as a 

responsible stakeholder, has to assume more accountability but, at 

the same time, it can question if the EU was and is able to fulfill 

its role as a responsible stakeholder. Equally essential are the 

internal political problems. The EU and China must remain aware

HARMONY SHANGHAI 2012 

In the view of 2012 as the anniversary year of “China and Germany 

– 40 years of diplomatic relations”, a team from Purple Star Culture 

& Communication Company will bring the first Community Dance 

Project to China, Shanghai: Harmony Shanghai 2012. Over a period 

of five weeks British Star-Choreographer Sir Royston Maldoom will 

train 120 Chinese and German children to perform his choreography

The German Chamber of Commerce in China • Shanghai will 

elect a new Board of Directors on 26 th April 2012. We invite each 

qualified Member of the German Chamber of Commerce in China

the state of the 

Sino-European 

economic relations. 

The fifth “Hamburg Summit: China meets Europe” will 

focus on the roles of China and the EU in the global economy, 

the perspective for Sino-European trade relations, raw material 

supply, and the liberalisation of the Chinese currency as well 

as new concepts for “Smart Cities”. The “Hamburg Summit” has 

an international reputation as a high-ranking Sino-European 

economic forum, which the participation by the Chinese Prime 

Minister Wen Jiabao in 2006 exemplified. Hence, for 2012, highlevel 

participation by the Chinese and German governments, the 

EU institutions as well as several international organisations 

is expected again. The “Hamburg Summit” was initiated and 

organised by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce for the first 

time in 2004 as a platform for an open dialogue between Europe 

and China with the goal to improve economic relations and 

mutual understanding.

Retention Management for Foreign Companies in China 

Due to the highly dynamic characteristics of the Chinese labour 

market, retention management is one of the most challenging 

tasks for HR decision makers. This training will therefore take 

a closer look at retention management that really works in 

China. Examples of retention programmes will be discussed and 

measures that produced a positive impact on turnover rates at 

small and medium-sized foreign companies will be explained. 

Employer Branding and Talent Attraction in China 

State-owned companies are increasingly the first choice for 

young talents – a consequence of salary levels catching up

30 Year Anniversary of Fiduca 

The year 2012 marks 30 years of Fiducia

On 3 rd February 2012, Federal Chancellor Dr. 

Angela Merkel, together with Wen Jiabao, 

Premier of the People’s Republic of China, 

visited the Herrenknecht plant in Guangzhou. 

Dr.-Ing. E.h. Martin Herrenknecht, Chairman 

of the Board of Management of Herrenknecht 

AG, presented the company and talked about 

important Chinese and international reference 

projects. In addition, he introduced a 

tunnel boring machine which is being used 

in the construction of the Metro Line 2 in 

Dongguan. Herrenknecht has been represented 

in the Chinese market since the delivery 

of the first machine for the construction of 

the Beijing metro in 2000. In the meantime, 

the company is generating around 20% of 

its group sales in China. The Herrenknecht 


(Guangzhou) Tunnelling Equipment Co. Ltd. 

branch, visited by the Federal Chancellor and 

the Premier, is a 100% subsidiary and the 

first plant established by Herrenknecht in

ICCS Wins the Title of Shenzhen

with the title 

“Shenzhen Labour Union Collective Bargaining 

Advanced Unit” on 29 th December 2011. 

This is a great affirmation of the related work 

of ICCS labour union organisation and an 

inspiration to all employees in the company. 

ICCS was mainly praised for its harmonious 

and stable employment relationship, including 

working hours, rest and vacation, labour 

safety and health, insurance and welfare as 

well as labour discipline. Only seven enterprises 

out of the many companies in Shenzhen 

were awarded this title and ICCS stood 

out due to its emphasis on the principle of 

equality and collective discussion process. 

Knauf Plant Opening in Taicang, 

Jiangsu province 

With its fourth plant in China to be fully 

operational in Taicang, Jiangsu province this 

year, Knauf is poised to make a stronger presence 

in the architecture sector and introduce 

its green concepts and products to Chinese 

customers, said Mr. Manfred Grundke, CEO of 

the company. Mr. Mark Norris, General Manager 

of Knauf China, added that the Chinese 

government has taken the lead in pushing 

material suppliers to go green. Knauf is actively 

engaged in supporting green architecture 

standards alongside the government and 

industry. The company contributed to 75% 

of the projects in the 2008 Olympic Games 

in Beijing, supplied plasterboard products 

to 15 pavilions at the 2010 Shanghai Expo 

and actively engaged in the Asian Games in 

Guangzhou. A private company, Knauf was 

established in 1932 in Germany by brothers 

Alfons and Karl Knauf and began producing 

gypsum boards in 1958.

Reception 

Following the successful “2011 New Years 

Reception” in Zhongshan City, the GCC • 

South & Southwest China was delighted to 

invite the German business community as 

well as government representatives to welcome 

the year 2012 on 11 th January. With 

the kind support of Pre-Cast Zhongshan and 

G.W.P Manufacturing Services AG, about 60 

guests were able to enjoy free German beer 

and food at Bellavista Restaurant. The main 

sponsor of the reception, Pre-Cast Zhongshan, 

was represented by its GM, Mr. Deckert. 

The company’s Zhongshan plant was established 

in 2009 and utilises a considerable 

number of high technology pressure die casting 

and CNC machines to supply products to 

local and overseas automotive and machinery 

customers. Mr. Deckert further announced 

that Pre-Cast plans to establish an education 

centre within its factory in the beginning 

of 2012 focusing on young people. During 

the training period, participants will rotate 

between various jobs within the factory such 

as office work and the tool shop. After completing 

the programme they will be equipped 

with valuable know-how to deal with future 

challenges and the continued economic 

growth of the company in China. 

German Federal Chancellor and 

Delegation stay at The Ritz-Carlton, 

Guangzhou 

The Federal Chancellor of Germany, Dr. Angela 

Merkel, concluded her official state visit to 

China with an extensive programme in Guangzhou 

on 3 rd and 4 th February. The official hotel 

chosen for the accomodation of the Chancellor 

and the accompanying German political 

and economic delegation was The Ritz-Carlton, 

Guangzhou. The Federal Chancellor was 

warmly welcomed by the General Manager, 

Mr. Timur Senturk, and the hotel staff. German 

Executive Chef Mr. Daniel Schmidt prepared 

the tailor-made German menu to surprise the 

delegation, reminding them of authentic German 

gourmet food from miles away.

The German-Chinese Economic Forum, organised by the Delegation 

of German Industry & Commerce (AHK Guangzhou), was held at the 

Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich’s Grand Ballroom, gathering nearly 500 

Chinese and German business and government leaders. The hotel was 

chosen as the host of the event as it is strategically located in Tianhe, 

the most dynamic financial and commercial district of Guangzhou 

and because the French tradition for Arts and Culture is a permanent 

feature of this hotel. 

TÜV SÜD Awarded Manifold 

TÜV SÜD received the “2011 pioneering service providers - the best 

training institution in China” award during the annual meeting of the 

strategic management of human resources of China by TopHR, the 

leading professional HR media in China. It is another award after TÜV 

SÜD was recognized with the “2010 training industry benchmarking 

brands of China” award launched by magazine shortly

German-Chinese Economic Forum Looks Ahead: 

German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Top Business Leaders Point out Solution 

The trip was not Federal Chancellor Merkel’s first and certainly will 

not be her last visit to China, but the number of tasks she set out to 

accomplish exceeded most of her previous travels to the Far East. This 

time, China not only welcomed Merkel as Germany’s head of government 

but also perceived her as Europe’s most influential voice regarding 

the European debt crisis. 

After starting in Beijing, the Chancellor continued her tight agenda 

in Guangzhou. No surprise, the Beijing stopover was dedicated to 

politics and macroeconomics: Chancellor Merkel met Chinese head 

of state Hu Jintao, held a keynote speech at the Chinese Academy of 

Social Sciences (CASS) in favour of the Euro, and promoted the European 

Union as a whole. The Chancellor’s Guangzhou visit focused on 

business topics but also gave considerable weight to politics: Prime 

Minister Wen Jiabao accompanied Angela Merkel to the capital of 

Guangdong province, highlighting the importance of her visit. She 

also met with Party Secretary Wang Yang, one of the top candidates 

for China’s centre of power, the Politburo Standing Committee. 

The German-Chinese Economic Forum gathered the German business 

community together. It was endorsed by the Asia-Pacific-Committee 

of German Business (APA) and organised by the Delegation of German 

Industry and Commerce Greater China, Guangzhou (AHK) in close cooperation 

with the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade 

(CCPIT) Guangdong and Guangzhou. The German Chamber of Commerce 

in China • South and Southwest China (GCC with AHK) made use of the 

opportunity by combining the Economic Forum with a networking event 

for GCC and CCPIT members, as well as selected regional VIPs. 

APA Chairman Peter Löscher, well known as the global head of 

Siemens, opened the Economic Forum by offering a first glance at the 

economic weight and urban development of the Pearl River Delta. 


In her much anticipated speech, Dr. Angela Merkel highlighted 

the state of the German “Mittelstand” and its opportunities in and 

for China: The Chinese need for sustainable solutions in transport, 

energy and communication infrastructure is one of a variety of 

examples where German technology could help China to accomplish 

its ambitious goals. Speaking of Guangdong, the Federal Chancellor 

added to the remarks of the previous speaker, Guangdong Governor 

Zhu Xiaodan, in stressing that the province had served as a pioneer 

for the efforts and capabilities of Chinese provinces, as well as their 

significant liberalisation towards Germany and the West. Merkel 

assured the audience that “German companies are prepared and 

willing to support!” 

In the following panel discussion, Dr. Jürgen Heraeus handled the 

severe time restrictions which were imposed by the protocol on the 

high-ranking business delegation accompanying Merkel: they arrived 

by plane from Beijing in the afternoon, visited the German tunnelling 

equipment manufacturer Herrenknecht with Wen Jiabao, and 

attended a round table with a selection of top Chinese business leaders. 

After attending the German-Chinese Economic Forum, they were 

invited to the Governor’s Dinner in Sofitel and a subsequent cruise on 

the Pearl River with the Chancellor. 

The names of the participants of the panel discussion, however, spoke 

for themselves. They included: Dr. Frank Appel, CEO of Deutsche Post 

AG, Mr. Jim Hagemann Snabe, CEO of SAP AG, and Mr. Liang Wengen, 

not only one of China’s richest businessmen, but also said to be a 

designated member of the nation’s top political cadre. 

The discussion dealt with the solutions provided by German and 

Chinese companies for the challenges of urbanisation and the 

development of megacities in the Pearl River Delta.

Dr. Appel initiated the discussion with the idea of utilizing public 

utility systems for the services industry, e.g. using metro lines for 

the transportation of goods. Since expanding megacities must offer 

more efficient solutions to properly accommodate and comfort their 

populations, this would help to relieve road traffic. 

Mr. Liang Wengen, who recently acquired Germany’s Putzmeister 

Group, famous for its concrete pumps, may serve as an example par 

excellence for Sino-German cooperation. After becoming familiar 

with the company as a business associate for several years, he 

decided to take it over. Contrary to fears that the Chinese tycoon 

might withdraw the money, he invested over EUR 100mn in R&D in 

Germany and still shows no hesitancy to invest further. 

Mr. Zou Chunsheng, General Manager of Beijing No. 1 Machine 

Tool Plant, also displayed distinctive knowledge about Germany. His 

expertise came not only in terms of business but, enjoyably, with 

respect to the distinction between “Bavarians” and “Franks”, as well. 

Ms. Wang Jing, President of Newland Group, showed intense 

aspiration for improving Sino-German business relations, which 

immediately led SAP’s CEO Snabe to propose closer cooperation - 

an illustrative gesture of mutual understanding. With SAP offering 

high-end software and IT-related solutions for business processes 

and announcing a multi-year spending plan in November of last 

year worth more than USD 2bn through 2015, Mr. Snabe again 

emphasized the expectations and potential in the Chinese market. 

China’s commitment to evolve from a simple manufacturer to a global 

hub of innovation will require advanced software and technology that 

SAP can provide. 

As a well-known expert on issues concerning resources and energy, 

Mr. Ulrich Grillo, Chairman of Grillo-Werke AG, raised the concern 

that “Mittelständler” are often particularly vulnerable to trade 

restrictions and hinted at difficulties in supplies with rare earths, to 

mention one prominent example. 

After the panel discussion, Professor Hans Heinrich Driftmann, 

President of “Deutsche Industrie- und Handelskammertag (DIHK)”, 

his umbrella association covering a membership of 3.6mn German 

companies, highlighted the importance of sustainable urban 

development. Claiming that “megacities of the future require 

intelligent traffic management, an operational power grid as well 

as universal Internet access,” he provided the audience with specific 

ideas for smart solutions and additionally emphasised the importance 

of green growth. 

Having led throughout the event, Mr. Holger Sindemann, Chairman of 

the German Chamber of Commerce in China • South and Southwest 

China, invited the attending Chinese and German companies of the 

Pearl River Delta to a well-received networking event. He summarised 

the get-together as follows: “The visit of Federal Chancellor Angela 

Merkel was unique for Guangzhou – so was the Economic Forum 

organized by the German Chamber. I thank the Chamber for making 

this event possible.”
