Contingentworkers also earned less: their median weekly earnings were only 53percent of that of noncontingent workers, although differences in ageand hours worked appear to account for much of the earnings gap.Regardless of age, however, contingent workers were less likely to beoffered health insurance or a pension plan by their employer.Data from 1997 show that nearly half of all contingent workersaccepted their contingent jobs for personal reasons: because they wanteda flexible work schedule, for example, or because they were inschool or in training.
