BOUNDARY
LINE
After many long months of planning I am happy to say
that the football season is finally here, with divisions
three, four and women’s commencing last weekend,
and the seniors, division two and under 18’s, as well
as our junior competitions all starting this weekend.
There has been a buzz around football circles about
the upcoming season, which has been generated by an
exciting pre-season, with the GIANTS playing an ACT
representative team to kick off centenary celebrations
and then selecting several local players to participate
in their NAB challenge games. This year promises to
be revolutionary for AFL in the Canberra region. We
will see the start of two brand new competitions, the
North Eastern Australian Football League (NEAFL)
and the Foxtel Cup. These ground-breaking changes
The Foxtel Cup is a very exciting prospect for all state
league football competitions in Australia. Starting this
year the competition will see the premiers from state
football leagues play off in a knockout competition
to be crowned the champion of champions. This
competition has already proved to be a massive
success with over 120,000 people tuning into watch
one of the first round games. This competition
provides a great chance for Canberra clubs to gain a
higher level of exposure around Australia which in
turn will strengthen the reputation of football in the
ACT. After successfully capturing the AFL Canberra
flag, Ainslie will play the West Adelaide Bloods for the
chance to move on to the next round.
The new NEAFL competition is going to provide local clubs
with a new and exciting challenge this season.
will lift our local competition to a whole new level
and it seems fitting that this is all happening in the
centenary year for AFL in the Canberra region.
The new NEAFL competition is going to provide local
clubs with a new and exciting challenge this season.
The draw will see local teams Ainslie, Belconnen,
Eastlake and Queanbeyan all travel to play Northern
Conference teams throughout the season. With
Northern Conference clubs also travelling to Canberra
to play their new Eastern Conference rivals. This new
style of competition will surely test our local clubs and
players but I believe we will be very competitive and
have a great chance at capturing the inaugural
NEAFL Championship.
The GWS GIANTS will also play in the Foxtel Cup,
drawing the Northern Bullants at the MCG.
As always, I would like to thank our official partners
and the ACT government for their continued support
which without we would have struggled to undertake
and complete the developments that have happened.
Good luck to all the teams competing across all
grades.
LOCAL GIANTS
By Dane Keenes
If you told footy followers at the start of last season that
AFL Canberra players would have the opportunity to lineup
against AFL superstars such as Carlton’s Chris Judd
and North Melbourne’s Brent Harvey, most would have
told you to take a hike.
But for Ainslie’s Marcus Crook and Ben Hughes,
Eastlake’s Aaron Bruce and Mark Kimball, Queanbeyan’s
Mitch Daniher and Tuggeranong’s Sean Ellis, it became
a reality.
THE SIX PLAYERS WERE SELECTED
FOLLOWING THE ACT Vs GWS
REPRESENTATIVE GAME IN
FEBRUARY AND PLAYED IN MATCHES
FOR THE GIANTS THROUGHOUT
THEIR PRE-SEASON CAMPAIGN.
Ainslie’s Crook played in the most games, running out
for NAB Cup matches against the Gold Coast Suns and
Sydney Swans, as well as NAB Challenge games against
the Kangaroos, Port Adelaide and Carlton.
“It was amazing, the opportunity to play at that level of
footy and at that standard,” Crook said.
“Being on the same field as players like Chris Judd,
Daniel Motlop and Danyle Pearce was pretty surreal.
“To play in that standard of footy really shows you it
takes to make it at that level and how hard you need to
work.”
Duel Mulrooney medallist Mitch Daniher is no stranger
to a high standard of competition, but even he found the
step up a challenge.
“It was pretty flat out,’’ he said.
“Definitely a lot quicker and there was a bit more
intensity.”
For Eastake’s Aaron Bruce the experience was not quite
unfamiliar territory, having being rookie listed by the
Swans in 2008.
But he relished the chance to play alongside brother Josh
Bruce, who was signed by the GIANTS last year.
“It was an awesome opportunity,” he said.
“It was a bit surreal... I’ve only played with my brother
twice before I think so yeah it was good fun to get out
there with him.”
Bruce, Crook, Ellis and Kimball also got the opportunity
to play against in the nation’s capital at Manuka Oval.
And a 157 point defeat to the hands of Carlton wasn’t
enough to dull the experience for those players.
“There was a lot of support from all the local teams and I
had some of my mates there... it was great,” Crook said.
“IT WAS A GOOD EXPERIENCE IN
FRONT OF A HOME CROWD, I WAS
JUST REALLY THANKFUL FOR THE
OPPORTUNITY,” BRUCE SAID.
The GIANTS play in Canberra for the first time in NEAFL
competition, against Ainslie at Ainslie Oval this Saturday.

50 GAMES
& COUNTING
By JOHN By John FORRESTER Forrester
6
Ainslie Football Clubs opening game against the
Greater Western Sydney GIANTS will be even more
important as two of the clubs key players play their
50th game.
Captain John Holmes and fellow Victorian Ben
Hughes will reach the milestone when they run onto
Ainslie Oval in the second round of the newly formed
North East Australian Football League.
The team will also be unfurling their 2010 AFL
Canberra Premiership flag when they host the
new GWS team for the first time in what will be
an eventful
Saturday
afternoon.
Despite the significance of the game, the players are
striving to treat it just like any other season opener
and get a win to put extra gloss on the day.
John Holmes is one of
the players reaching the
achievement and was
recently reinstated as the
club’s captain after winning
the Premiership in his debut
season as skipper.
After being scouted from an Under 18’s club in
Victoria John has turned out to be a key member of
the current squad.
Ainslie FC also assisted the teams leader in getting
his apprenticeship in plumbing and he has shown his
loyalty by staying at the club for four years.
The player said that the 50 game milestone had
slipped his mind and that he is expecting a good and
tough match from the new club.
Fellow Victorian Ben Hughes is the other player
who will be playing his 50th game after starting his
career in North Melbourne as a rookie.
After being delisted in 2007, Coach Chris Rouke
quickly took the opportunity to invite the player
up to Canberra to have a look around, where he
instantly fell in love with the place.
Just like with skipper John Holmes, the club
helped the talented youngster get used to his new
surroundings by helping him find a job and a place
to live.
The 49 game player is not treating the day any
differently and is just hoping for a win to start the
new season.
But I think whether it’s my 50th or 55th game it’s
still going to be the same, just ask for a win and
hope that everyone plays well.
Both players would trade all the praise for a first up
win against the competitions newcomers, and with a
little luck this Saturday.

COMING OF AGE – Rob Tuohey
Rob has had a huge pre-season and just done everything
asked of him. He is in the top three players in fitness
in the club and recently played for the ACT in the Rep
Under 23 against GWS. Rob has played just on 50 games
for club and is still only 21. He is very versatile and is
probably on the way to being a future leader at the club.
NEW RECRUIT – Damian Bowles
Damian is big and strong mobile recruit from the AFL. He
can play a number of positions up the spine and posses a
booming kick to go with good marking power. “Bowlesy”
is just super competitive with a very professional attitude
to training and playing. He represented NSW at country
championships in 2010.
SUPERSTAR – Marcus Crook
Marcus has raw talent and class, an all-round utility who
played three games with GWS over the summer and won
the best player award at the 2010 country championship,
runner up in the Mulrooney Medal in
2010 and is still only aged 23.
THE ROCK - Michael Ghobrial
Michael is an experienced backman who has had
shown real commitment during the pre-season. He has
demonstrated renewed passion for the game after the
premiership and is very excited about new competition
and opportunities this year.
HARD AS NAILS – Ash Harris
Ash still only 21 but a player who thrives on hard work,
loves the contest and can play back or forward, has
played rep footy and is a consistent player week in week
out. Super fit and strong with one of the Club’s best work
ethics.
THE BIG IMPROVER – Ben Perry
Ben is former American college basketball player who
has had a massive pre-season, good overhead mark and
straight kick, Ben plays ruck or forward, he is very mobile
and is just on the move consistently. Ben runs 3km time
trials in 10 mins 30 sec. And that’s at a 197 cm.

YOUNG GIANT
STANDING TALL
By JOHN By Shaun FORRESTER Ebert
Hailing from Dartmoor in Victoria, GIANTS youngster
Jeremy Cameron has only just celebrated his 18th
birthday a mere week from his debut in the brand new
NEAFL competition. Cameron was officially the seventh
player to be priority listed by the Club and is one of the
younger players to line up in the GIANTS squad. We
caught up to talk about his experience so far.
How do you find being one of the youngest guys in
the team?
I don’t think it is any different for us younger guys, we all
have to be leaders and stand up at the right time.
Have you learnt anything from the older guys in the
team?
Yeah, I’m still learning heaps. I have only been playing for
three years and am still learning lots of including how to
prepare properly for games.
It’s a big change going from a small town, Dartmoor, to a
big city like Sydney. How are you finding it?
THE FIRST FEW MONTHS WERE
REALLY HARD BUT A LOT OF THE
BOYS HAVE COME FROM DIFFERENT
AREAS SO WE HAVE MADE SURE
THAT WE STICK TOGETHER AND DO A
LOT OF STUFF TOGETHER. ALL THE
GUYS REALLY HELPED ME SETTLE
IN QUITE FAST AND I AM REALLY
ENJOYING IT NOW.
What about your selection? Were you surprised at
how sudden it happened?
Yeah I was actually, I wasn’t really thinking about it
much. I was just concentrating on having a good season
with the North Ballarat Rebels then towards the end
of the year I received a call saying that they wanted to
select me in one of their priority spots. It was a massive
surprise but I was really happy to receive the chance.
How do you find playing for Kevin Sheedy and Mark
Williams?
They are really great. Their knowledge of the game is
just amazing and they are always there to help.
What is the main thing you hope to get out of the
upcoming NEAFL season?
I think the new competition will be really good for the
team, it will help us work on our structures and I
think we will be really competitive. Personally,
I think it will give me a great chance to learn
from some really experienced footballers and
that will in turn help me improve my own game.
AFL Rookie Draft and is from the North Ballarat Rebels.
Clifton was the winner of the JJ Liston trophy in 2010
and is a solid performer for the GIANTS in the midfield.
The big improver – Dylan Shiel
Shiel signed a three-year contract with the GIANTS in
October 2010 and under the AFL list concessions. He
was a member of the 2010 AIS AFL Academy and was
recruited from the Dandenong Stingrays in Victoria.
GIANTS coach Kevin Sheedy said that Shiel’s leadership
qualities would be important to the future of the club.
FOR ONE BETTER
IN 2011
By JOHN FORRESTER
By Matthew Tucker
It was so close yet so far for tormented Demons who
came agonisingly close to glory last season.
Last years Grand Final loss was a bitter pill to swallow
for the Eastlake Football Club after such a tight
contest, but as reflected by Demons skipper Chad
Gibson it’ll be the source of great motivation to go one
better in 2011.
Aaron Bruce, who was one of the Demons better
players, said about 2011, “We’ll butter up again. We’ll
keep improving, we’ll get fitter, stronger, better and
come back and have another crack.”
There’s no doubt that the
Demons have be a
determined group for
the last 6 months
under a rigorous
pre-season and there
will be no shortcuts
taken under coach
Daniel Archer’s
guidance.
And you sense an
improved Demons
side with the likes
of John Van Meurs,
Jason Duce, Leigh
McMahon, Daniel Ryall
and Dean Roulstone,
amongst others, will be a
pretty frightening prospect
for opposition sides in 2011.
Along with this, the strong influx of younger players
moving up through the ranks will be sure to bring both
excitement and great energy to the side.
WHICH PRODUCED INTENSE
PRESSURE LAST YEAR,
GOING FORWARD THEY ARE
KEEN TO IMPROVE ON THIS
AND GAIN SOLID OPTIONS UP
FORWARD.
However, in saying that, the Demons didn’t do a lot
wrong last year, after getting off to a slow start they
certainly were able to turn things round. They already
have a quality playing group with even more talent
added this year. All statements and comments out of
the club since the loss have hit the right chords.
After all, they only lost eight matches in 2010 and
made significant improvements during the season
suggesting they are a team on the ascent.
Demons coach Daniel Archer said at the Demons
official season launch, “There have been a number of
individuals that have gone to that next level in their
football (in 2010) and we’ll need a lot of players to
improve again”.
He added, “We feel we’ve got a game plan that stands
up anywhere in any conditions at any time and we’re
determined to make it even better.”
Indeed, emerging from the Grand
Final defeat with a steely resolve
to get better shows the Demons
are here for the long haul.
Last years loss will serve as great
motivation and this side will be back
bigger and better in 2011.
EASTLAK
CLUB NEWS
QUICK SIX
For many outsiders, the Grand Final appearance in 2010
was an overachievement for such a young team. For the
players, 2010 was a sign of things to come.
Player retention has been strong at Eastlake and the
excitement around the Club is a reflection of the
commitment to 2011. With the new opportunities and
experiences facing the Club, the start of the season
cannot come quickly enough. The core of the Senior
Team has been training since November and has been
complimented by the addition of some quality new
players.
Eastlake continues to develop our people and our Club.
In January, the Senior Coaching Team attended the AFL
Coaching Conference in Melbourne which gave some new
ideas to the Coaches and also reinforced that Eastlake is
on track with our approach to the NEAFL. The opportunity
to provide our players with a pathway to the highest level
of AFL continues to be there and the challenge of the
NEAFL will certainly give our boys a true indication of
where they stand.
The off season has seen Eastlake expand its footprint
in Canberra. The Club has expanded its commercial
operations with the acquisition of The Sports Club Kaleen
and the recent renovations are now complete which gives
patrons a quality new venue on the northside. This venue
will compliment the Eastlake Football Club in Kingston
and the Calwell Club in Tuggeranong, and provide an
even more sustainable organisation for the challenges of
modern day football.
The Club has clear aspirations for 2011 and our players
are looking forward to the challenges of the NEAFL. The
culture is healthy, the players are excited and the Club is
well positioned for the future.
E STORY
Coming of Age – David Cummins
A player of immense potential who has had a solid pre
season and is aiming to establish himself as consistent
first grade player. His natural football ability is very
exciting and he has the opportunity to become one of the
NEAFL’s young stars in 2011.
New Recruit – Mark Kimball
After spending a successful stint with QAFL Premiers
Morningside, Mark as returned home clearly better for
the experience in the QAFL. His approach to pre-season
training has been very professional and the Club is
looking forward to the class he will add to the midfield.
Superstar – Aaron Bruce
The player Eastlake is looking to dominate in 2011. His
versatility and skills are well known in the competition,
and the Grand Final loss in 2010 has left a strong desire
in Aaron to perform even better this year.
The Rock – Chad Gibson
Over the off season, the Club Captain has driven the
playing group to aspire to bigger and better things in
2011. His approach to developing the team is outstanding
and the culture at Eastlake is largely due to the
leadership of Chad. His actions on the field will continue
to be the benchmark by which the Club performs.
Hard as nails – John Van Meurs
Every forwards nightmare. Strong, fast and committed.
John is traditionally a fearless defender and has the
ability to shut down the most talented players in the
competition. Don’t be surprised to see him take his game
to a new level in 2011 and make his presence felt in all
parts of the ground.
The Big Improver – Daniel Ryall
A player who came to the Club as a talented youngster
and is now one of the most committed footballers at
Eastlake. His passion for the game and the Club is clear,
and his development in recent times indicates he is set
for a strong 2011. He has matured into a quality player
and will be vital to ensuring Eastlake’s backline is tough
to penetrate.
SWANS RESERVES
READY TO KICK
OFF NEW SEASON
By JOHN FORRESTER
By Natasha Lorenz
SWANS
THE SWANS RESERVES HAVE BEEN
COMPETING IN THE AFL CANBERRA
COMPETITION SINCE 2003 WHERE THEY
DOMINATED THE LEAGUE PLAYING IN
AND WINNING FOUR GRAND FINALS
BETWEEN 2005- 2008.
The implementation of the North East Australian
Football League (NEAFL) has changed the outlook of
AFL in Canberra. The Eastern Conference will include
the five Canberra based clubs and the two Sydney
based AFL clubs in the Swans and the GIANTS.
With restrictions placed on the Swans Reserves as to
how many listed players may be named in the team
and how many are allowed on the field at one time.
The Reserves have taken it in their stride making it
into the Preliminary finals last year only to be beaten
by eventual runners-up Eastlake.
New coach of the Swans Reserves, Henry Playfair
is excited about the new NEAFL competition and
believes it will benefit the Reserves as they prepare
for the Eastern Conference.
“I think it is a great initiative from the AFL, just to
raise another second tier competition in NSW and
Queensland, it lifts the profile of our reserves and
AFL Canberra… It gives our young players exposure to
AFL listed clubs in Brisbane, Gold Coast and GWS….
Anything that benefits our younger players to come
up and play seniors is a good thing.”
Playfair took over the Swans Reserves coaching role at
the start of the season after having to retire suddenly
last year. He is enjoying being a part of the Swans
again and is working closely with Swans Senior coach
John Longmire as to the style the Swans will play
throughout the season.
“I have really enjoyed it, it’s been fantastic to stay
involved in the club…I think it is hard to say what my
style will be, I am working that out myself….
I am certainly trying to implement what John is doing
at the senior level and trying to get the players ready
to step up to senior football.”
New draftees and rookies of the club began their preseason
training in November last year, where players’
fitness levels were the main focus before turning their
attention to skill development.
The Swans Reserves have started their pre-season off
strongly winning all of their practise matches against
the East Coast Eagles, Belconnen and the GIANTS.
Playfair said that he is looking forward to the season
starting this weekend against Eastlake and he is
hoping that the players take on board feedback and
are able to improve each week.
CLUB NEWS
QUICK SIX
Guiding the Swans Reserves in 2011 will be Swans
Development Coach Henry Playfair.
Playfair’s playing career came to end 2010 after suffering
a back injury, but the former key forward said he was
enjoying life as coach.
“I’ve had a great preseason working with the Swans
development squad,” Playfair said.
“As a player, you probably don’t appreciate how much
work goes into everything behind the scenes, but in the
coach’s department we are doing a lot of analysis and
preparation, and that is something I’ve really enjoyed,”
he said.
“Last season was a fantastic year of development for all
of our younger players, highlighted by the fact we were
able to field five senior debutants, the majority of whom
started with the Reserves.
“Throughout the pre-season we have been able to give a
number of young players a crack at senior football and
I’m looking forward to seeing who can step up and really
challenge our senior players for spots in 2011,” Playfair
said.
new recruits. - Jed Led
The Swans first selection in the 2010 national draft,
Lamb is a crafty small forward who is deadly around
goal. He has shown good ability during the pre-season
and kicked six goals in a recent practice match against
the GWS GIANTS at ANZ Stadium.
new recruits. - Luke Parker
Parker is a tough, inside midfielder, recruited with
pick 40 in the 2010 National Draft. He has exceeded
expectations during the preseason and shown enough
to suggest he will push for senior selection in 2011.
new recruits. - Alex Johnson
Johnson was selected at pick 57 in the 2010 National
Draft. At 193cm, he is capable at either end of the
ground, but has played predominately as a defender
in the Swans Reserves practice matches. Johnson
has impressed the Swans coaching staff with his
competitiveness and the strong presence and voice he
has out on the field.
new recruits. - Eugene Kruger
Relatively new to Australian football after playing
rugby union for much of his youth, Kruger was rookie
listed by the Swans after a promising season with the
East Coast Eagles in 2010. Kruger possesses outstanding
running ability and led the pack during throughout the
Swans pre-season.
new recruits. - Ben Haren
A rookie from South Australia who is a key forward
prospect. It is expected Haren will take some time
to develop in the Reserves this year, but his strong
hands and nice set shot, has already seen him prove
dangerous. He booted three goals in a recent practice
match against the GWS Giants.
new recruits. - Max Otten
Max is the brother of Adelaide Crows defender Andy
Otten. He was rookie listed by the Swans in the 2010
Rookie Draft for his natural footy instincts and quality
ball use. A versatile a prospect, he has had an injury
interrupted preseason but has played two recent
practice matches with the Reserves.
TIGERS READY TO
SHARPEN THEIR
CLAWS IN 2011 By JOHN by Michael FORRESTER Minns
Unity. That will be one of the strongest themes for the
Queanbeyan Tigers in season 2011.
In a new competition, the Tigers will see plenty of new
faces ensuring that it will be a year of fresh experiences
for the club.
With a new coach, and the loss of several players, the
Tigers are relishing the chance to play in the new
NEAFL.
New coach Rod O’Riley, hailing from Queensland, says
that overcoming the loss of key players including 2010
captain/coach Mark Armstrong will prove to be the
biggest test.
“It’s all about coming together as a side, we have
fantastic depth, 19 players in our senior squad won’t be
playing first grade or reserves this weekend. We have a
good range of skill levels and our new players are coming
together so hopefully it is not too disjointed.”
Heading in to the inaugural season of the NEAFL,
the Tigers have lost nearly 1000 games of top grade
experience. It is a staggering amount of experience lost
for a club for the club who is coming off the back of four
consecutive finals appearances.
“We’ve obviously lost Mark (Armstrong) to retirement, as
well as promising young player Jason Satchell and a key
ruckman Andrew Lieschke.” O’Riley said.
On the other side of the story, Queanbeyan will have
plenty of youth to call upon in 2011.
“With so many new players coming in to our setup, the
change of competition will be good for everyone.”
But with all of the losses aside, Queanbeyan still have
a core of key players who will be feared by rival clubs.
Representative footballers James Kavanagh, legendary
on-baller Mitch Daniher and Captain Ryan Quade will
expect to be prominent players throughout the season.
O’Riley compared the transition and player turnover to
that of the new AFL franchise, the Gold Coast Suns, who
endured a tough induction to the AFL after a 119-point
loss to Carlton.
“It will be a similar story to that of the Suns I would
think, it will probably take a while to come together
but there is plenty of potential there for success in the
future”
The first test for the Tigers this season will come up
against another side that have plenty of new faces, the
Belconnen Magpies. Like the Tigers, the Magpies had a
mass exodus of players and saw some heavy recruiting
out of the Cairns region, another region partaking in the
NEAFL.
“Both clubs have had very strong recruitment and there
will be plenty of new faces so I guess whoever handles
the change better will come out on top on Sunday.”
It is a chance for O’Riley to develop a winning culture
at the Tigers and it starts this Sunday and 2pm at Dairy
Farmers Park in Queanbeyan.
CLUB NEWS
QUICK SIX
The Tigers Club would like to welcome everyone
associated with the organisation to yet another exciting
period of its long history. Our entry into the North
East Australian Football League has created tremendous
enthusiasm as we enter a new era for the Club.
All twenty “new” names in our senior grade list are all
under the age of 20 which speaks highly for the clubs
future. Most have graduated from our Under 18 Grade
team of 2010. We welcome newcomers Steve Jolliffe
(Collingullie), Alex Overs (Assumption College), Mitch
May (Swans Reserves), Ben Walsh (Ganmain), Liam
Walker Eastick (Tathra), Daniell Campbell (Marist), Peter
Shugg(Tasmania) and the return of Jeremy Kirkwood
(from injury), Kaine Stevens (GWS) and Michael Redmond
(studies).
The Club also welcomes the majority of our volunteer
group back for another year and are pleased to advise
that our long serving Team Manager Noel Miller will
be backing up for his 35th year in the main position.
Although taking a step back he will remain the face of
the Tigers change rooms in 2011. Coming on board to
assist in the team management area will be Ray Daniel
who has been doing a power of work over many years
preparing the rooms for training and the ground for
match days. Another newcomer is long time supporter
Matt Napier who will assist on match days.
On the coaching scene Rod O’Riley takes over the reigns
(after a 17 year absence from the main job) from Mark
Armstrong who served the club as Coach for nine
seasons. 300 game player Michael Goiser joins
Rod as an assistant after a couple of years with
the umpiring fraternity. Todd Pulford rejoins
the Tigers as an assistant to the first grade
team. Former Premiership player Steve West
moves up from the Under 16 Coaching role. Marist
Premiership Under 18 Grade Coach Brian Campbell has
also joined our coaching group.
STORY
Coming of Age - Ryan Price
A developing 19 year old who won the Tigers 2010 Under
18’s Grade Best and Fairest Award after being runner
up to team mate Jake Oram in the League Best and
Fairest. Ryan was rewarded with selection in the ACT
Representative team earlier this year.
New Recruit
This could be any one of a number of youngsters in the
Tigers ranks including the likes of Alex Overs, Steve
Jolliffe, Liam Walker Eastick, Daniel Campbell and Mitch
May. All four are under the age of 19 and look likely
contenders for a senior grade spot with the Tigers.
Superstar - James Kavanagh
Reputations don’t last forever but this guy keeps getting
better with age. James Kavanagh has simply been
fantastic since joining the Tigers in 2007. His mobility
and tenacity to “run all day” has him amongst the
leading forwards in the competition each year. Gained
the Captaincy of the ACT during last years country
championships.
The Rock - Ryan Quade
Captain Ryan Quade has been a stalwart of the Tigers
Club with 136 1st Grade games (plus a season of AFL
Canberra games with the Sydney Swans Reserves). This
includes a premiership in 2006 with the Swans. He
comes from a strong football background with numerous
relatives also playing with the Tigers over a long period
of time.
Hard as Nails - Mitch Daniher.
Can’t go past Mitch Daniher. At just 24 he has two
Mulrooney Medals to his name (2009 and 2010) plus
three Tigers Best and Fairest Awards. He has represented
the ACT on numerous occasions including this year’s
match against GWS GIANTS after which he was chosen to
play with the GIANTS in the NAB Challenge.
The Big Improver - Andrew Swan
Played the majority of 2010 in the Tigers 1st Grade team
after some excellent performances in the Under 18 Grade
competition. Joined the Tigers from St Edmunds in 2009
and hasn’t looked back. Gained selection in the ACT
Representative team earlier this year.
NEW TALENT
SET TO SHINE
by Lucy Hinchey
By JOHN FORRESTER
This year the Belconnen Magpies have a raft of young
talent sourced from all over the eastern states. Losing
a few players at the end of last year, The Magpies
have recruited players from Cairns and Redlands QLD,
through the Riverina and Wagga Wagga right down to
the Victorian boarder in Aulbury.
New Recruit Oliver Tweedale has joined the club from
the Blue Mountains. Standing at 195cm tall, Tweedale
also holds a scholarship with The Essendon Bombers.
This requires him to travel to Melbourne every so often
throughout the season.
The introduction of the Greater Western Sydney
team into the local league this year has changed the
competition dramatically.
Belconnen Magpies Coach Michael Horne, says the
club has had to ramp up pre-season training in order
to match the fitness of the Sydney Swans and the
GWS GIANTS.
“Obviously there are other guys who they have
drafted from the VFL, so it just makes the competition
a lot tighter.”
For the first time this year, all senior players embarked
on a pre-season training camp at Pambula. Around
150 players were involved in the camp, which included
beach training, teamwork and bonding as well as goal
setting.
Horne believes having
the larger teams in the
competition is great for
younger players to see
the opportunities that
are available.
“The positive is that I think young kids in Canberra now
can see a good pathway to play AFL. The league has
needed something like this for a number of years.”
Belconnen Magpies lost their trial match against the
Sydney Swans 19.13 to 5.5. Horne said the defeat was
actually a good thing for the team “It opened the eyes
of the new guys at the club. They realized where the
level of footy was at.”
Magpies have fielded first year players in key positions
in their trial games and will have a different looking
side for the round two clash against Queanbeyan.
CLUB NEWS
QUICK SIX
2011 marks the 40th Birthday of the formation of the
Belconnen Football Club when the Turner Football Club
moved out to the newly formed Belconnen district in
1971. Over the past 40 years the club has enjoyed and
endured both the best and worst that football can
offer. These times have forged the strongest friendships
and relationships and the club will be celebrating this
milestone at this year’s 100 Club dinner. We invite all
past players, officials and supporters to register their
interest by email to football@belconnenmagpies.com.au
This season we are proud to be a foundation club of the
NEAFL competition and we are excited by the challenge
that this brings. We would like to welcome to the club a
new senior coach in Michael Horne. Michael has brought
a wealth of enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to the
role and has already put his stamp on this new group of
players. We would also like to welcome the new players
and their families that have joined us from interstate.
Finally we would like to acknowledge the tremendous
support of our loyal corporate and major sponsors:
Coming of Age: Ryan Turnbull
After 6 years of senior football, 83 first grade games, 3
years as an ACT representative player and a First Grade
Premiership under his belt 22 year old Ryan Turbull still
has room for improvement. Since winning the Best 1st
Year Senior Player in 2006
New Recruit: Andrew Dess
While University studies have brought Andrew to
Canberra, he is keen to make an impression at the
club that his father captained when Alex Jesaulenko
coached in 1988 and 1989. From Lavington in the Ovens
& Murray League, Andrew joins his younger brother
Brendan Dess at the club
Superstar: Simon Curtis
Simon Curtis is already a stand out player amongst those
in the know at BMFC. Simon prepares himself each week
as good or better than any other player. He has the
motor to run through the midfield if required, however
he has earned his reputation as a creative, running half
back who can also shut down any key forward in the
comp.
The Rock: Rhys McAlister
Since joining the Magpies in 2009 Rhys McAlister has
earned the reputation as Mr Reliable down back. What
he lacks in height, he more than makes up for with brute
strength and agility to match it with the best forwards
in the competition. Another one who prepares himself
well each week,
Hard as Nails: Lexie Bennett
Lexie Bennett is to Belconnen Magpies what Steve
Waugh was to the Australian Cricket team and Brett
Kirk was to the Swans. He is a custodian of the history
and traditions of the club and he passes on the cultural
values and expectations to the junior players and to
those who are new
Big Improver: Lachie Harper
Write down this name… Lachie Harper. As a 16 year
old he has stamped himself as the Big Improver at
BMFC over the summer. Another one from a Belconnen
Magpies family, (father John is a former senior coach,
player and current U18 coach) Lachie is a hard running
utility player who has impressed coaches with his
composure and steely resolve.
HAWKS READY FOR
THE CHALLENGE
By JOHN FORRESTER
By Joe Prevedello
The Tuggeranong Hawks are going into the revamped
NEAFL season 2011 with the goal to make the finals
after finishing in sixth position last year, with 6 wins
and 12 losses.
Coach Glenn Gorman, who will start his second year
in the job, said the Hawks focus has changed over the
summer months and the team are ready to make their
mark.
“LAST YEAR WAS ABOUT
BUILDING BELIEF IN THE
GROUP AND GETTING
AWAY FROM THE STIGMA
THAT WE WERE THE
EASY BEATS OF THE
COMPETITION,” HE SAID.
TUGGAS
“We spoke a lot about our goals this year at pre-season
camp where the group agreed that we really want to
make the finals this year.
“This year we want to get off the bottom, get out there
and compete against the top sides” Coach Gorman said.
The Hawks managed to post some positive results
towards the end of last year, including wins against
finals sides in the Sydney Swans and Queanbeyan
Tigers.
2011 will also see some new faces in the Tuggeranong
side as well as missing some familiar ones.
It was with resounding team consensus that Alex
Lawder take over after the captaincy following last
year’s retirement of long time Hawk and club stalwart
Jay Kickett.
“Alex will be a strong leader of the boys, he has the
support of all the players and will stand up and lead
the way” Gorman said.
The club has also lost the services of Rhys Cutifani and
Jimmy Rice who has moved to Narrandera, but has
gained young blood from Marist College in Kirk Mahon
and Shaun Kelly and Ben Hancock and Zeke Lamb from
the Gippsland.
“We are a young side but we’re ready for a challenge”
Gorman said.
Gorman believes that all sides in the competition have
the ability to be competitive this year.
The Hawks have an interesting first month of footy
hosting the bye in round two before beginning their
campaign away to GWS on the 16th of April, another
general bye, then away again at the Sydney Swans on
the 29th of April.
CLUB NEWS
QUICK SIX
STORY
Welcome to all the Hawks members, sponsors and
supporters to another year of footy. With the great finish
the Hawks had to last year, every one is excited about the
new NEAFL competition and seeing the players move into
the new league.
The Hawks have added some new talent to its list with
Nathan Edvyvean (Coolamon), Zeke Lamb (Yarram, Vic),
Ben Hancock (Poowong, Vic) and the return of Matt
Ghirardello from Queensland.
The Club is also very excited that we bolstered our player
numbers and have entered a team in the Division 4
competition.
300 Club Games for the Chief - Gerrit “Chief” Wanganeen
will play his 300th Club game this weekend. In any
competition and club this is a huge milestone and
everyone at the Hawks congratulates you and hope there
are many more games.
A Tuggeranong Lions Junior, Chief has played with
the senior Tuggeranong Football club since 1992. He
captained the 1994 and 1995 colts premiership sides,
made his senior debut in the 1996 season, captained the
1998 Reserve grade premiership side, and played in the
2001 third grade premiership side. Chief also captained
the reserves in 1999, and from 2003 to 2007, and
coached the reserves in 2002 and 2005.
Chief is currently the club games record holder with 300
Club games including 11 seniors games, 149 reserves
games, 63 district games and 77 colt games. Off the field
Chief was the Player’s Representative on the board from
1999-2002 and has spent two stints on the board as the
Director of Football from 2002-2005 and from 2007 to
the present.
Gerrit is the ultimate Club person who is always there to
lend a hand and offer advice. Chief has a wide respect
amongst the ACT football community and there probably
isn’t a player running around that Chief doesn’t know or
played footy with.
The Tuggeranong Hawks would like to thank all our
sponsors for season 2011 and appreciate your
wcontinued support.
Coming of Age – Chris Robinson
Chris finished-off season 2010 in style. He found his
feet in a defensive role that really seemed to suit his
natural ability to read the play. After completing a big
pre-season he is primed to build on the momentum
he generated last year and have a huge impact on the
competition in 2011.
New Recruit – Zeke Lamb
Zeke was recruited to the Hawks from Gippsland and
he has not put a foot wrong so far. He lives and breaths
footy and going on his form in the pre-season practice
matches he will be a very exciting addition to our list
in 2011.
Superstar – Ben Cleaver
Ben had an amazing year for the Hawks in 2010, which
resulted in clearly winning the Club’s Best and Fairest
award, which he thoroughly deserved. He is a great
role model for the young players on our list due to his
incredible work ethic, discipline and team first attitude.
He has enormous respect from all involved at the Hawks
and although he would hate the tag “Superstar”, he
clearly deserves it.
The Rock – Kurt Masters
Kurt was one of most consistent contributors in 2010.
At age 30 he is seen by a very young list as one of the
veterans at the club and he never lets anyone down with
his on-field efforts. Even when he wasn’t winning a high
number of possessions, his work in close at stoppages
was priceless, clearing the way for the younger players
to capitalize.
Hard as Nails – Alex Lawder
Alex has a reputation within the group as someone
who will never take a backward step especially when
having to put his body on the line. He always attacks
the footy with ferocious intent and has developed into a
great leader amongst the group, which is why his peers
elected him Captain for the 2011 season.
The Big Improver – Dave Smith
Dave is a player that is very passionate about his
footy and it shows in his meticulous preparation and
commitment. Towards the end of last year he really
started to grow in confidence and produce some high
level performances. He has had a great pre-season
and all indicators point to him being the “Big Improver”
of 2011.
