to successfully place a retired racehorse will<br />

most commonly follow a transition period and<br />

retraining phase.<br />

Owners are encouraged to retire their horses<br />

responsibly. Additionally, owners of newly retired<br />

racehorses are encouraged to be prepared to<br />

financially support the TRP program for at least<br />

six months at a projected cost of $400 per month.<br />

Owners are encouraged to consider financial<br />

support for longer time periods for horses that are<br />

unable to complete the TRP program within six<br />

months. The physical and behavioral soundness of<br />

the newly retired Racehorse plays a major role in the<br />

nature of each horse’s TRP program. As such, owners<br />

and trainers are urged to plan the eventual TRP<br />

program for each of their horses and retire horses<br />

prior to behavioral or physical challenges that will<br />

lengthen the TRP program.<br />
