The program is seeking to involve a rehabilitation facility which would care for horses that need<br />

between 6-12 months care. This could either be an expansion to the existing Purple Haze Center<br />

or partnering with an other entity such as a prison.<br />

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA)<br />

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) regularly contributes financial support to<br />

retirement and retraining facilities, including the Columbia Greene Humane Society, Old<br />

Friends, the Exceller Fund, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and Equine Advocates.<br />

While promoting adoption and rescue initiatives, in 2009, NYRA implemented an anti-slaughter<br />

policy that revokes NYRA stalls from owners or trainers who are found to knowingly sold a<br />

horse for slaughter.<br />

Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen Association’s Turning for Home Thoroughbred<br />

Retirement Program at PARX Racetrack<br />

Since its inception 3 and ½ years ago, Turning for Home has secured a safe and humane<br />

retirement for 640 thoroughbreds that have been injured or are no longer competitive. The<br />

program’s funding sources include:<br />

$10 per-start fee paid by owners, which began in May 2008. While the fee is voluntary,<br />

the PTHA Board voted to support the fee, and all owners participate<br />

PARX Racetrack contributes $50,000 per year to Turning for Home<br />

The PTHA contributes $50,000 per year to Turning for Home<br />

Pennsylvania Breeders contribute $10,000 annually<br />

Jockeys contribute $10 per win and $5 per place to Turning for Home<br />

The program also hosts benefit events, including dinners and raffles, to further raise<br />

funds.<br />
