District Reports
District 10
District 10 continues to meet monthly at CJ Calloway’s on the first Tuesday of every month. We are preparing for the annual
state South Dakota Nurses Association convention to be held October 4-5 , 2015 at the Downtown Holiday Inn. We are
extremely excited to have as our keynote speaker Pam Cipriano, the President of the ANA. The programing committee has put
together a great line up of presenters, there will be something for all who attend. The theme for the convention is ”What would
Florence think?” We are presenting three tracks: clinical, leadership and self-improvement.
We just completed another project in May as well. We put on a workshop “Ethics in Nursing: What Nurses Need to Know”
it was very well attended and had great reviews that the content was extremely applicable to today’s issues. We had a profit
of $2, 415.32 after expenses, with great turnout of 160 attendees. We also cosponsored a workshop with the Center for
Nursing Workforce, “Leadership At All Levels.” This joint venture was well attended with 66 registrations. We also had a small
fundraiser for coffee this past year; that generated $271.65 net income.
In conclusion District 10 has been busy for sure! We are seeing that activities that work well for this area are well put together
workshops that offer education at a value to our members and to the nursing community as well. This might be a way to
meet the needs of our members better in the future. A big thanks to Darcy Schulman-Justice for her skill at scheduling great
speakers with great content.
Sincerely,
Marian Eberhard
District 11
District 11 hosted Darcy Sherman-Justice and Teresa Frederick presenting “Is Social Media Friend or Foe” at USD for members
and USD nursing students in early October. Those attending found it very interesting. Later in October we helped with a Pizza
Ranch fundraiser in Yankton for the benefit of The Servant Heart Clinic which provides medical care to those who can’t afford it.
We had a good turnout of members and a number of MMC nursing students who helped with the project as well as ate the great
pizza. Some of the staff gave us an interesting presentation about the clinic afterwards.
In November the members brought gifts for the Human Services Center patients. Many of the patients wouldn’t get anything if
not for the generosity of volunteers.
John Lushbough, organizer of the Vermillion Weekend Back Pack Food Program, talked to a full room of members and many
USD nursing students. The presentation was very interesting and a number of students offered to help during the school years.
On Thursdays between 200 and 300 back packs are filled at the VMS so they are ready to be taken home by students on Friday.
In March, Jean Hunhoff, gave a very interesting presentation on Legislative issues this year in Pierre. She talked to a room full of
members and MMC students. There were a number of questions and the discussions were very informative.
Our May meeting discussion was around awards and possible nominations as well as needing to find another district president
since our present one needed to resign due to school and family responsibilities. All members are encouraged to think about
running for an office in the district as well as state wide.
During the free noon meals at the Vermillion Jolley School this summer our district members assisted with the Friday Back Pack
program. A big “thank you” goes to all who volunteered their time.
In July we met at MMC in Yankton. Kathy Jorgensen has agreed to be our District 11 president. Thank you Kathy. We discussed
some plans for this fall and encouraged members to attend the SDNA convention in Sioux Falls in October.
