DEPARTMENT
three weeks in Africa helping Epic Change build a photography
library that could help raise awareness and money for a school run
by a local woman. We came to find out that the concept of local
leadership was incredibly important in Tanzania because it allowed
for sustainable change to take place. Instead of throwing money at a
problem, Epic Change helped to build on a strong foundation that
had already been established. It’s actually an incredibly heroic story.
is woman, known to everyone as Mama Lucy, sold eggs from her
chickens to raise enough money to start teaching children. She
started with just a few kids and year aer year has added new classes
as the students get older. With the help of Epic Change she has been
able to buy a small piece of land and build four classrooms. Last
year the school qualified for the first time to take the government
exams and Mama Lucy's school scored the best of any school in the
city.
Do you ever shoot for pure enjoyment? If so, what types of
images do you take on those occasions?
I do, but they are mostly family or travel photos. Every year my
family does an incredibly over-the-top Christmas card. My parents
have nine grandchildren so we start preproduction meetings in early
October.
How did St. Sebastian's help prepare you for your current
career?
St. Sebastian’s prepared me more for life than it did for my
career. And I mean that as the highest praise. I always felt like the
teachers at St. Sebastian’s taught by example, and I was lucky to have
some great mentors while I was there. ey really stressed the
importance of being honest with yourself in all things - and that's a
great thing to learn. If I grow up to follow in the footsteps of guys
like Mr. Burke and Mr. Nerbonne, I'd be proud of what I
accomplished. n
