ATHLETICS
WINTER SPORTS
unrestrained, Jack’s an excellent skier and
developing into an outstanding racer. He
took risks at practice and improved as a
result. Richard Arms ’14 returned to the
team aer a sledding injury and quickly
reemerged as the 4th seeded skier. His
calculated assertiveness resulted in top 20
finishes. Richard was a tremendous help to
the coaching staff, doubling as a team
manager while injured. In his second
season transitioning from snowboarding,
Will Barnard ’12 exemplified the motto of
“failing better.” Bold, determined, and selfmotivated,
Barnard tried his best everyday
to improve and made an effort to take risks,
which resulted in earning a Varsity letter.
Henry Finnegan ’14 also lived this motto
and pushed himself each day on the slopes.
An outstanding skier, Finnegan aimed to
succeed each day. He disqualified more
than he would have liked, yet made gains
that he will carry with him next season.
James Astrue ’12 competed on both Varsity
and Junior Varsity and made gains pushing
himself to hold his tuck longer. Astrue will
join Patrick Ciapciak ’12 and kevin Wolfe
’12 as tri-captains next season. Ciapciak
took risks while navigating new skis and
saw gains at the Catholic Cup. Wolfe ’12, a
former snowboarder, transitioned into one
of the top skiers in the ISL with a top finish
in 14th place in the Giant Slalom. TS Eliot
wrote, “You have to risk going too far to
discover just how far you can really go.”
Wolfe is a competitor who strives to
discover how far he can go. So far that
motive has taken him far. Will Vietze ’11
and Nick Chappel ’11 led this season as Co-
Captains . Vietze ’11 joined the team as a
seventh grader. A powerful skier, Vietze
hammers down with sharp reactive
instinct, and courage. What has been clear
about Vietze’s skiing from the beginning is
that he skis with heart. When we le the
Ski East League in 2009, Vietze was ranked
4th overall in the Ski East League. His top
finish this season was a 2nd place in the
Catholic Cup. Vietze competed in the
NEPSACs with a 15th place finish in the
Giant Slalom. He concludes his career as
one of the finest St. Sebastian’s skiers in the
team’s history. ree years ago Vietze was
successful in recruiting accomplished skier,
Nick Chappel. In 2009 Chappel topped the
scores of the Ski East League, scoring top
five in most races. On February 16, Nick
competed in the NEPSACs and medaled
8th place in the Slalom and Giant Slalom.
is year Chappel’s top finish in the ISL
was 2nd place. He tied for 5th overall this
season. Chappel was unanimously voted
by ISL Coaches for Alpine ISL All League
in 2010 and again this season in 2011. us
far Chappel is distinguished as one of the
top skiers in Arrows Skiing History next to
Barry Connolly ’99. uS Ski Team member
Ted Ligity was recently quoted as
succeeding by “throwing down whatever
you got.” Chappel threw down everything
he had both this season and last season.
Highly self-motivated, determined,
focused, and passionate, Chappel has raw
grit and talent. On top of it, he is an
excellent leader, teammate, and a pleasure
to coach. Both Vietze and Chappel raised
the bar for St. Sebastian’s Skiers and unified
this team. ey made me a better coach.
is season would not have been
possible without the support of parents and
the St. Sebastian’s Staff. Coach Simoneau
and I are very grateful for your support and
