WINTER SPORTS
Arrows In Action
Acompletereviewofthe2010-2011varsitysportsseason.
Coach Sean McCann
Varsity Hockey
Seniors desmond Bergin, Gerard
McEleney, and donny McGuirl led this
year’s varsity hockey team into the playoffs
while playing in one of the most challenging
high school leagues in the country. eir
performance, character, and leadership
propelled St. Sebastian’s to some outstanding
wins against league rivals and a much
improved 15-10-2 record.
e season started seamlessly with three
very good games by the Arrows. Junior
Stephen Brown sparked the attack against
Rivers School with two goals in the first
period to get the offense rolling. Before
suffering a concussion, which sidelined him
for the remainder of the season, Jake
McLaughlin was one of the seven different
players who scored in route to a convincing
8-1 victory. A very good Milton Academy
was next on the schedule. is game was
outstanding, with both teams displaying
midseason form with excellent passing and
goaltending. danny O’Regan provided Seb’s
with an early lead, but a second period goal
by Milton tied the game going into the third.
Although Seb’s had a few good scoring
opportunities, Milton was able to take
advantage of a late power play and score the
decisive goal with under one minute to play
in the game. With no time to regroup, Seb’s
renewed an old rivalry with Exeter Academy.
An early one goal lead by Exeter proved to be
short lived as Seb’s scored the next four goals
of the game, two each by Brendan Burke and
O’Regan, to capture a well deserved 5-2
victory.
unfortunately, the next two games
provided a wakeup call for the team.
Although the Arrows outshot both BB&N
and Brooks by a considerable margin, poor
penalty killing and scoring woes resulted in
two very difficult losses.
Aer these games a very determined
squad entered the annual holiday tournament
against Winchendon and proceeded to score
early and oen to take a commanding 5-0
lead in the first. Joe Prescott garnered three
points (2g, 1a) while donny McGuirl
recorded his first shutout of the season in a 7-
0 win. ayer Academy was the final
gateway to the championship (for the second
year in a row). Although Seb’s scored twice in
the first 13 minutes to take an early lead,
penalty difficulties and a very good ayer
power play led to 4 special team ayer goals.
e team responded well the next day and
defeated Rivers for the second time this year.
Gerard McEleney was an offensive juggernaut
with a six point game and Gordon donnelly
posted his first shutout as Seb’s finished off
the tournament with an 8-0 victory.
e Mutch Cup at Harvard university
against CM is always an exciting event and
the Arrows played an outstanding game
against a very hard working and physical CM
team. Tommy kelley had a goal and an assist
while Noah Hanifin notched his first varsity
goal and Gordon donnelly earned his second
straight shutout in a 6-0 win.
Aer a well deserved holiday break, the
Arrows entered the Prep School Showcase at
Foxboro. An extremely strong Berkshire
