The public face focuses on mitzvot and communal worship. The private face focuses on your personal encounter with the Divine. In this two-seminar series Rabbi Rami will introduce us to several Jewish meditation practices--chanting the 13 Attributes of God, reciting the Sh’ma, and isolating oneself with God-- and help us design our own Jewish practice for God-encounter. Social Action Allocation Highlight: Better Decisions Each month we will highlight an organization which receives funds through The Temple’s Social Action Allocations. Twice a year, Better Decisions offers an eightweek program that utilizes a structured curriculum to teach decision-making skills to women incarcerated at the Tennessee State Prison for Women in Nashville. Their goal is to equip each inmate student with the tools that will help her learn to make good decisions while incarcerated, and to accept the responsibility of building Each year, the Social Action Allocations sub- Committee sends Requests for Proposals to community organizations which meet our guidelines, and then evaluates the resulting proposals. Recommendations are approved by the Social Action Committee, and then by the Board of Trustees, for allocations to be made from funds earmarked for Social Action. In 2012, twelve agencies—including our own Room in the Inn—will receive a total of $15,000. At Room in the Inn We’re once again hosting 10-12 ladies each Monday evening until the last Monday in March. We could very much use travel-size shampoos, conditioners, etc., as well as feminine hygiene products. Please bring to Temple and drop off in the little kitchen next to Meeting Rooms A & B. Contact the of ce if you’d like to volunteer to help or to provide dinner. Suitcase Drive From Sunday, January 15 th through Sunday, January 22 nd , we will be collecting suitcases, duf e bags, backpacks and anything else foster children can use to transport their belongings when they need to change residences. These are distributed by the Department of Children’s Services. If you would like to help transport these items, or have any questions, please contact Linda Latter (lindalatter@yahoo.com). Since 1999, Better Decisions has depended upon the support from the Social Action Allocations to offset printing costs for the manual used to train volunteer mentors, and the 55-page student workbook which is distributed to 75-90 inmates. These materials are essential for program delivery. We are also proud that several of our Congregants are among the volunteer mentors working with this program. Shabbat services on January 13 th , we will honor these agencies by providing them an opportunity to display information about their organizations in our Oneg area, and a representative of one of them will be speaking that evening.
