2015 Mississippi Nurses’ Association Annual Convention with budgets and practical business decisions as these are activities that I routinely encounter in my current work responsibilities. It is my desire to serve and give back to my profession. My past years as Treasurer show my record as being involved and available to meet with the MNA staff as needed. I am capable of the task at hand and if elected, will represent you in a positive and professional manner. Thank you for your support in the past; and thank you for your membership and involvement in our professional organization. It takes all of us to accomplish issues that face our profession. If you have a specific question prior to election, please feel free to contact me. Your vote is needed and will be appreciated. I will work hard for our organization and the nurses of Mississippi. Position of Director, Council on Education Candidates who have qualified for this position: Lisa Deloris Slade, MSN, FNP-BC Biographical Profile: I am a 24 year veteran nurse. I have been caring for the patients of Southeast Mississippi in some capacity during those years. My undergraduate degree, obtained at USM, allowed me to begin to see the inequities in healthcare. My graduate degree, also obtained at USM, has allowed me to work with those citizens that inequities greatly impact. I am now near completion of Doctor of Nursing Practice. My perspective is changing from the individual to groups of patients. As Director for the Council on Education for the past two years, I have lead a fantastic team as we have expanded the opportunities in MS for RNs and APRNs to obtain CEs. I look forward to the opportunity to further grow this arm of the Mississippi Nurses’ Association in a second term. Statement of Intent: Over the course of the past three years, I have worked diligently with the Executive Director, staff at MNA, and the Provider Unit to lay a foundation for expanded educational services for the nurses of MS and surrounding areas. I believe to be an effective advocate and caregiver, a nurse must stay abreast of new technology, research and evidence based guidelines. Awareness of public and legislative actions that affect the patients of MS are also two very important areas. The Provider Unit has long enjoyed ANCC Accreditation status. However, at our last review, we were given the highest marks afforded by ANCC. This is due largely to the hard work and dedication of the Provider Unit members, and the vision shared by myself as Director, and the Executive Director, Ms. Teresa Malone. Plans for this next two years include recruitment of more committee members who can and will work hard to support the nurses of MS, and expansion into other areas of education for RNs and APRNs. It is an honor to lead this dedicated team and I hope to continue that leadership for a second term. 40
2015 Mississippi Nurses’ Association Annual Convention Position of Director, Council on Organizational Affairs Candidates who have qualified for this position: Amber Arnold, DNP, RN Biographical Profile: Amber Arnold is a registered nurse with clinical expertise in pediatrics and critical care and currently works for the Chief Medical Officer of University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). After 10 years in the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children with varying roles from staff nurse to Clinical Director, she followed her passion for improving patient care on a system-wide level. After training at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Patient Safety Executive Development Program, she assumed her present role to facilitate change in unsafe behaviors affecting the culture of safety. Through her experience and education, Amber has developed strengths in team and relationship building. She has had the opportunity to participate in a variety of training courses related to patient safety science and team training allowing for a broad resource base. Amber continues to build a strong contact network through memberships in the Mississippi Nurses’ Association, UMMC School of Nursing Alumni Board, American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety, and University of Mississippi Medical Center Alliance. Amber obtained a Master of Science in Nursing from UMMC in 2009 and graduated from the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program in 2013. She is a certified critical care nurse alumnus and a TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainer. Amber also serves as an administrative sponsor for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School chapter on UMMC’s campus. Statement of Intent: I have served as the Director for the Council on Organizational Affairs for the past two years. I also previously served on the Nightingale Committee for a number of years. I have enjoyed my involvement in the operations of the Mississippi Nurses’ Association and have learned a great deal along the way. I would like the opportunity to continue to lead organizational affairs associated with the Mississippi Nurses’ Association and engage our colleagues throughout the state in this very important work. I hope we can continue on the path to positive changes including increased membership and additional funding for our organization. In addition, I hope we can continue to attract an increased number of professionals to Convention including nurses and vendors. I hope to continue review of our bylaws to flow well with ANA bylaws, and I will work to keep them appropriately updated as changes are made. 41
