STORY FOR KIDS
26
So the pandava brother called
Krishna and said, “As per
Bhishma’s advice I wish to
give you these offerings as a
mark of respect.”
The king of Chedi, Shishupala
was witnessing all this. He
was seethed with anger and
got up from his seat shouting
at Krishna with displeasure.
Shishupala was not happy
as a mere cowherd is being
honored first. He began to
call Krishna with names and
was using a verbal duel.
Krishna kept listening to all
these patiently. But at a point
of time, Krishna lost his cool
and killed Shishupala with
his Sudrashan chakra. The
weapon slashed Sishupala’s
head.
Background behind the
death of Shishupala
The death of Shishupala has
an interesting background.
The background is related to
one of Krishna’s friend and
his charioteer, Udhava, who
asked about the Shishupala’s
end.
Shishupala is also Krishna’s
cousin. Shishupala was born
with four arms and three eyes.
A heavenly voice came at the
time of his birth. The voice
said that his arms and extra
eye will disappear, when
someone makes him sit on
their lap. The voice also said
that same person will also
see the end of Shishupala.
Meanwhile, Shishupala began
to grow.
One day, Krishna went to
his aunt Satyavathi, when
Shishupala was an infant.
Talking to Krishna Satyavathi
said, “Oh Krishna, Shishupala
is handsome just like you.”
Listening to this, Krishna took
the baby from the cradle and
put the baby on his lap. Right
then Shishupala’s extra arms
and eye left the body. Krishna
was surprised to see this. But
Satyavathi was unhappy. She
told Krishna that a heavenly
voice said that Shishupala
will die in the hands of
that person, who makes
Shishupala sit on his lap and
when his extra arms and eye
disappear.
Satyavathi took a promise
from Krishna that he will
excuse Shishupala hundred
times before he kills. Krishna
gave her this promise. She
also said that her son should
go to heaven after he dies.
Krishna told Udhava that
he excused hundred times
before killing Shishupala.
The Sisupala story shows
a discrete way in which
divinity keeps count of one’s
atrocities, and pays back
when the line has been
crossed.
Another story related to
Shishupala’s end
Another story related to
Shishupala’s end is that
of curse of brothers Jaya
and Vijaya. Brothers Jaya
and Vijaya were the guards
to the heavenly gate. Due
to a curse, both of them
were born on earth as lord
Vishnu’s enemies. According
to the Puranas, they were
born in the Dwapara yuga
as Thanthavakra and
Shishupala. Krishna killed
both of them.
‘‘
Satyavathi
took a
promise from
Krishna that
he will excuse
Shishupala
hundred times
before he
kills. Krishna
gave her this
promise. She
also said that
her son should
go to heaven
after he dies.
