Musicians that played in Antarctica and lived to tell
FROZEN MELODIES
The White Continent has become a place
of special challenge for artists all over, who
wish they can once play in one of the most
extreme stages of the world.
Freezing finger, uncomfortable clothing, and
being covered head to toes, are just some
of the obstacles that must be dealt with by
musicians with the privilege to play a chord
in Antarctic lands.
Without a doubt, this is one of the most
extreme and eccentric natural stages in the
planet, where sounds and melodies have
a hard time flying through the air without
freezing into silence on the way.
On December of 2013, of the most important
thrash metal bands of the world decided to
suit up and give a very special concert that
was seen by millions.
Thousands of miles from any important
world center, Metallica became one of
the few musical bands to include playing
in Antarctica to their record, doing so on
Carlini Base’s heliport. In this opportunity,
Metallica played inside a dome and the
usual amplification system was replaced
with headphones that each and everyone of
the attendees had to wear, so as to reduce
the sound impact on site.
Thirty years before, Los Jaivas (Chile),
were invited over by a television show,
with the idea to record images for a movie
that never premiered. For this, they played
at King George Island, with temperatures
under -25ºC. In 1981, the musicians also
travelled to Machu Picchu to realize a tv
special with Nobel Literature Prize winner,
Mario Vargas Llosa. Talk about contrasts.
In 2000, Argentinean musician León Gieco
shared his folklore with Base Marambio’s
dotation, and in 2007, as part of the global
mega festival Live Earth, the English Nunatak
marked history by playing outside, in front
of a crowd composed of scientists of Great
Britain’s Rothera station. The band was also
composed of science research men.
Initially, the idea was to send over a famous
band or artist, but given the logistic difficulties
for such endeavor, the organization opted for
giving the “local” group a chance.
Meanwhile, from Punta Arenas, electronic
music duet Lluvia Ácida may beconsidered
a true Antarctic band, dedicating a large
part of their 20 year career to interpreting
the polar imaginery, counting several times
playing live in Antarctica.
Both Metallica and LLUVIA ÁCIDA
flew on board Antarctic Airways’s
BAe 146-200 to reach their cold
destination.
