ITEBOARDING × HANGING The world of Kiteboarding is an ever changing, emerging world of diversity. The popularity of brands, pro riders, and styles, ebbing and flowing like that of the most convoluted river. With the current state of mainstream Kiteboarding as fluid as ever. When kiteboarding first developed a competition scene, it was all about going big. Go big, unhook, heck even throw a big dangle pass in there if you were bold enough. It was extreme and hard core. As things progressed, the term 'freestyle' came to mean doing your tricks with less movement in the kite, more handle passes and points rewarding for max power and speed into and out of the maneuver. Then of course there is wave riding. It's popularity consistently on the rise at coastlines around the globe. Despite the lack of a consistent competition circuit, wave riding has persevered and is a mainstay in kiteboarding's mainstream. Racing took a major growth spurt when talk of Olympic participation was on the table and another rise with the development of foiling. Which with the introduction of production boards has also just become kiteboarding's own version of the 'soul surfer' ride and is on a rapid upward trichectory of its own. But there is one discipline that, long considered the black sheep of Kiteboarding, who's time has now come to share some of the spotlight; Park Riding. Although the discipline it self is relatively nothing new. Riders like Mauricio Abreau, Andre Philipp, Jason Slezak and Moe Gold just to name a few, have been kiting on features since before most of the pro riders these days were out of elementary school. The renowned Triple - S Invitational just had its 10th anniversay this past year, bringing 'like minded' riders together for a week long park shred fest since 2006. However, despite the efforts of some of these revolutionary godfathers, this side of our sport has stayed comparably small to some of the more traditional disciplines. Yet as of late there seems to be a shift going on. A growing acceptance of park riding as one of the big dogs in kiteboarding. Maybe it has to do with the instability of the world tour, maybe we are getting more athletes crossing over from sports that can most easily relate to park riding, who can say exactly. But what is even more exciting is that there are more and more young riders finding their way into kiteboarding parks across the globe, pictures and videos boasting the completion of backyard builds, and new events showcasing park riding as the main attraction like last week's Blue Palawan Kite Open. And who knows, in the years to come we may even see ourselves crowning official world titles in park riding. Time will only tell how far this growing trend will reach. Colleen
