Required: Academics with
passion and drive
Students receive plenty of advice about applying for scholarships from their teachers, mentors
and parents. However, it’s a valuable opportunity to receive insight from the actual person who
is going to access your application and may recommend you for the next stage of the selection
process. If you are lucky, you may even ultimately meet this person face to face for an interview.
Anjuli Muttoo, Senior HR Manager at Mourant Ozannes, offers some helpful guidance to
prospective applicants.
Q:What is your selection process from receiving the application form to interview?
A: All applicants are first required to submit an application form which helps us understand the
basics of your background and your career aspirations. Once you’ve submitted your application,
we then go through a short-listing process where we’ll review your application in detail. If you are
selected as one of the top candidates, we will ask you to meet with us for an interview.
Anjuli Muttoo, Senior HR Officer,
Mourant Ozannes
Q: What does Mourant Ozannes look for in an applicant?
A: We are looking for Caymanian students who have excellent academic records, while also
exhibiting some of the qualities that the firm values in its employees – strong collaboration and
teamwork skills, commercial acumen, and intellectual rigor.
Q: Is your decision based on academic skill set or the applicant’s personality and future goals?
A: We take both into consideration. Your academic record is important, and if you are a
scholarship recipient we will expect you to maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in the
US / 2:1 or higher in the UK . However, we also want to hear about your goals and passions, and
what you plan to do once you’ve completed your degree. How will you use what you’ve learned to
make a meaningful career? What does a “meaningful career” mean to you?
Q: What are your expectations of your interns?
A: We expect our interns to embody the qualities that we value here at Mourant Ozannes. In
addition to the ones mentioned above, we also value mutual respect, forward thinking, and a
commitment to clients (whether they are internal to the firm, or external). We hope to provide
you with an internship experience that will give you real value and solid learning that you can
take with you as you progress in your career – and in return we expect you to be committed,
engaged and enthusiastic!
Q: What are the expectations of your scholarship recipient?
A: Like our interns, we expect our scholarship recipients to be shining examples of our values.
We expect you to maintain a good academic record and also to embody the qualities of a leader.
We want to hear about the things you’re learning – so we’ll ask you to provide us with an update
once per quarter. We also require our scholarship recipient to be available to work for Mourant
Ozannes for a minimum of four weeks during the summer holiday (this will be a paid position)
to give them some proper work experience to complement their scholastic studies.
Q: Can you offer advice to students who are lucky enough to be selected for the interview process?
A: Come prepared! We’ll already have seen your application and your resume, and if you’ve made
it to the interview stage, we’re already impressed. Be prepared to go further and really show us
why you are the best candidate to be an ambassador for Mourant Ozannes.
