Scholarship FAQ’s
Take full advantage of the
scholarships available
It’s that time of year when students need
to seriously start thinking about their
future education and how to fund it.
Many would-be scholars often don’t
apply for scholarships because they
are completely unaware of the awards
available to them.
Dreams can be put on hold due to lack
of awareness, whether this is due to
donor companies not broadly marketing their scholarships or students not properly
researching possibilities.
Now there are no excuses.
The 2016 edition of the Cayman Scholarships Directory continues to expand its
content and listings of scholarships available to students locally.
There are scholarships available for undergraduate and/or postgraduate studies
overseas in accounting, law, marine engineering, tourism, actuarial science,
information technology and culinary arts and food management.
Deadlines are fast approaching, so now is the time to focus on completing the
application forms. Refer to www.caymanscholarships.com for tips on resume
preparation and making your application dazzle.
I hope this edition of the Cayman Scholarships Directory 2016 assists not only
students, but also their parents, mentors and teachers, to guide them on their way to a
rewarding education and successful future career.
Don’t forget to look out for the Cayman Scholarships RECIPIENTS Directory which
will publish in September 2016, featuring the lucky recipients of this year’s awards.
My closing advice to students is – you have to go after a scholarship in order to win it.
Make the effort, the rewards are worth it.
EY scholarship recipients
enjoy success
Ernst & Young Ltd, Cayman Islands, offer a generous scholarship up to the value of US $30,000 per annum, which is renewable for
up to 5 years, or until recipients qualify to write the US-CPA exams. Three successful EY awardees – Angela Whittaker, Shanna
Ruiz-Whittaker and Christy Gaus - share with us their experiences and career paths as inspiration to students who hope to apply
for scholarships in 2016.
Angela Whittaker, EY Audit Manager,
awarded EY scholarship in 2008
Q - Where and what did you study?
A – I pursued a combined BBA/MBA in
Accounting at Pace University located in
New York City.
Q - Now that you are a full time EY
employee, what is your career path?
A – In October, 2015, I was promoted to the position of Audit
Manager. This is yet another milestone that I’ve accomplished
here at EY. I’m currently on the path for senior management
leadership and hopefully partnership at EY.
Q - How has it changed your life being a scholarship recipient?
A – It has given me a lifetime of benefits. I’ve grown independently
from being abroad at university. Also, I have discovered myself
while gaining an understanding of a different culture. I’ve made
some lifelong friends whom could potentially be important
networking tools later down the road. This experience has given
me the necessary academic and social tools for success.
Shanna Ruiz-Whittaker, EY Audit
Manager, awarded EY scholarship in
2006 (transferred to EY London in
September 2015)
Q -Where and what did you study?
A - I attended the University of Tampa
and graduated with a major in accounting
and a minor in finance.
Q -What does it mean to be an EY scholarship recipient?
A - EY is very prestigious and we have very high standards so
when I was awarded this scholarship, I felt honored and proud.
I also knew that being awarded this scholarship meant there
were standards that I would have to uphold which I took very
seriously. The firm was very supportive while I attended university
offering internships during my summer and winter breaks.
Q-What advice can you give to students applying for scholarships?
A- I would encourage students to have confidence and never
underestimate their value. If you believe in yourself, then you
won’t let anything stop you from achieving your goals. At EY
we look for people with dreams and the ambition to make those
dreams a reality.
Christy Gaus, Audit Senior,
awarded EY scholarship in 2006
Q -Where and what did you study?
A - I attended Palm Beach Atlantic
University for my undergraduate and
MBA degrees and Florida Atlantic
University for my Masters in Accounting.
Q-What has been your role(s) at EY since you joined the
company after graduation?
A- I was an intern for two summers at EY between my junior
and senior year then between graduation and beginning my
masters. I started as a Staff Accountant and have since been
promoted to Senior. I have worked on clients in the hedge fund
and banking industries.
Q - Have you had the opportunity to work at an EY office
overseas?
A - Yes, I took an opportunity to work at another EY firm in
Stamford Connecticut (New York Metro area) for 2 years.
Undergraduate scholarship
INTERVIEW
TIPS
Here are a few tips to
consider if you are
shortlisted to be
interviewed for the
Butterfield Undergraduate
Scholarship:
- Be confident. Take the
time to clearly think about
your responses. If you are
unsure of a question, ask
that it be repeated again.
Butterfield HR Manager Joanna Virtue-Markman with 2015 Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship
Recipient Leanni Tibbetts.
Butterfield is committed to
helping young Caymanians reach
their potential through higher
education. That’s why, on a yearly
basis, we provide the Butterfield
Undergraduate Scholarship to
assist students who are pursuing
an undergraduate degree at
overseas colleges and universities.
Reviewing the many applications
during the shortlist process can
be time-consuming and it is
important that applicants take the
time to review the instructions
and terms and conditions for
each scholarship that they apply for.
See below for some important
tips to note when applying for
the Butterfield Undergraduate
Scholarship:
- Applicants must be Caymanian
and between the ages of 17 to 25.
- Applicants must complete
the Butterfield Undergraduate
Scholarship Application in full.
- A letter from a parent/
guardian undertaking to accept
responsibility for additional
funds over and above the
Scholarship allowance necessary
to maintain the scholar at an
educational institution abroad, or
a letter from a Bank stating that
required.
- Three references are required:
one from the School Principal
- Academic certificates, together
with full details of grades
attained in the various subjects.
Official certification of grades is
necessary if these do not appear
on actual certificates.
- Allow yourself sufficient time
to collect the various documents
required. Failure to provide
the required documents might
render you ineligible.
- When presenting your
information, be clear and concise.
How clearly you communicate
is as important as what you
communicate.
- Separate yourself from the other
candidates. Show passion and
genuine interest in your writing.
- Pay special attention to the
presentation and proof-reading
of your application. Be aware of
sentence structure, spelling and
grammar.
- Responsibility for the
submission of the required
documents, on or before the
stated deadline, rests entirely with
each applicant. Butterfield will
not follow up with applicants to
obtain missing documentation.
what I’ve received at PwC. They were
with me every step of the way and I was
able to gain invaluable work experience
during my time as a scholarship student
that provided me with a foundation that
proved very helpful when I started full
time.”
Now, a Senior Associate in PwC’s
Assurance department, Suzanne says
being professionally qualified has
definitely opened doors for her. In
addition to gaining work experience
to apply to PwC. My experience as
a scholarship student and now as a
the amount of support and guidance I’ve
received over the past 5 years has been
instrumental in my growing career.”
Peter says that PwC is delighted to
Questions to ask yourself before
deciding on a college
By Lisa Beauchamp
It’s a daunting task choosing a college. With so many excellent colleges
offering the same major, you need to consider each option carefully. It’s
imperative to match your needs and priorities in order to ensure your
college experience is as fulfilling as possible.
Of course you are going to be bombarded with advice and information
from teachers, mentors, family members, and fellow students. In
addition, there is a ton of advice online which can be overwhelming.
Take control of the situation and dedicate time to asking yourself the
following questions which will help you to focus on your preferences
and what interests you, to enable you to format a relevant, significant
and attainable list of colleges.
What do you want to major in? Your scholarship may stipulate what
you are going to major in. If the decision is yours and you’ve selected
an area of study that interests you like design, medicine, law or
engineering, then you need to research colleges that offer this syllabus.
If the college does have the appropriate major, is the major programme
sufficient?
If you are not certain about your major choice – do you need
flexibility to change majors? Be careful as changing majors once or
even multiple times can seriously affect your graduation date, your
scholarship (if you have been awarded one), be costly financially and
cause you a lot of stress. By carefully researching your choice of major
in advance you can avoid this happening.
Is a large university the right environment? Leaving the cozy and
safe community of Cayman, your home, your family and friends, is a
big shock to the system. The advantages of attending larger universities
and colleges are the opportunities to meet many new people and
participate in lots of extracurricular events. However the size of the
campus and huge number of students (in and out of class) may not
appeal to more introverted students who could feel quite overwhelmed
and isolated.
Geographic location of college? This is an important consideration
for students wishing to travel home to Cayman for the holidays, as
flights can be expensive, especially as the price of plane tickets increase
during the school holidays. How close is the college to the airport?
Consider the climate, as you may have to tolerate colder temperatures
including snow and ice. Also, consider selecting a college location
close to a town or city where you may apply for internships or jobs in
the future.
Reputation and referrals – do you know a current or former student?
It’s valuable to listen to current students’ experiences and check the
college’s graduation results. Caymanian students may feel more
comfortable attending a college where other Caymanians are studying
instead of attending a college where they don’t know anyone. Ask about
the professors and sizes of classes; gather as much information as you can.
Are there activities that you wish to continue to pursue or new
activities that you wish to participate in at college? Extracurricular
activities are an important part of your development and engagement
with college life. Make note of which activities are significant to you.
Are you planning to take a part time job while attending college?
Attending college and studying is a full time commitment. Hopefully
your scholarship will cover your living expenses so you can focus
100% on your studies. If you do need additional income, check to see
if there are part time job opportunities on campus. If not, research
opportunities off campus which are easily accessible, as you don’t want
to spend valuable study time travelling to and from a part time job.
Consider all of these factors and you’ll be able to make a sound
decision. Good luck!

HOW TO SELECT A SCHOLARSHIP
By: Sherrill Ebanks CAMS, LLB (Hons)
Head of HR – Cayman & BVI
Ask Your Academic Advisor: If you are currently a student, you
likely have access to an advisor or counselor. Take advantage! He
or she may know about a scholarship that’s a good fit for you.
Increase your chances of success: Almost all scholarship
opportunities require at least one to two letters of
recommendation. Select people who can write a solid
recommendation providing specific details about your work
ethic, drive, sense of responsibility, and other positive traits that
would support your application. Distinguishing facts should
include your involvement with local charitable organizations,
volunteer projects, or any type of academic success.
Start before senior year: Scholarships often have a minimum
GPA requirement, so getting an early start gives students an
opportunity to work toward having a higher GPA if necessary.
Starting early also increases your options and better prepares you
for the application process.
Organizations and Businesses: Businesses and organizations,
related to your field of study, often offer scholarships to students
going to college to study in a field that could be potentially useful
to them in the future.
Be specific: When searching, it’s important to look
for scholarships that apply directly to you. Search for
scholarships based on your field of study, your interests, your
experience, etc.
Pay attention to Deadlines: Deadlines vary by scholarship;
some are the summer before your senior year, others in the
fall or as late as spring. Be organized and keep track of due
dates by keeping a calendar. Make your earliest deadline
the deadline for all of your applications. Do not miss your
deadlines. If your application arrives late, you’ll have zero
chance of receiving that award.
A final word: You may review a hundred scholarships before
you find one that applies to you. Be patient, stay the course
(and keep those grades up!) as eventually you’ll uncover a
good match. You’ll appreciate all your research when you
secure some funds!
Required: Academics with
passion and drive
Students receive plenty of advice about applying for scholarships from their teachers, mentors
and parents. However, it’s a valuable opportunity to receive insight from the actual person who
is going to access your application and may recommend you for the next stage of the selection
process. If you are lucky, you may even ultimately meet this person face to face for an interview.
Anjuli Muttoo, Senior HR Manager at Mourant Ozannes, offers some helpful guidance to
prospective applicants.
Q:What is your selection process from receiving the application form to interview?
A: All applicants are first required to submit an application form which helps us understand the
basics of your background and your career aspirations. Once you’ve submitted your application,
we then go through a short-listing process where we’ll review your application in detail. If you are
selected as one of the top candidates, we will ask you to meet with us for an interview.
Anjuli Muttoo, Senior HR Officer,
Mourant Ozannes
Q: What does Mourant Ozannes look for in an applicant?
A: We are looking for Caymanian students who have excellent academic records, while also
exhibiting some of the qualities that the firm values in its employees – strong collaboration and
teamwork skills, commercial acumen, and intellectual rigor.
Q: Is your decision based on academic skill set or the applicant’s personality and future goals?
A: We take both into consideration. Your academic record is important, and if you are a
scholarship recipient we will expect you to maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher in the
US / 2:1 or higher in the UK . However, we also want to hear about your goals and passions, and
what you plan to do once you’ve completed your degree. How will you use what you’ve learned to
make a meaningful career? What does a “meaningful career” mean to you?
Q: What are your expectations of your interns?
A: We expect our interns to embody the qualities that we value here at Mourant Ozannes. In
addition to the ones mentioned above, we also value mutual respect, forward thinking, and a
commitment to clients (whether they are internal to the firm, or external). We hope to provide
you with an internship experience that will give you real value and solid learning that you can
take with you as you progress in your career – and in return we expect you to be committed,
engaged and enthusiastic!
Q: What are the expectations of your scholarship recipient?
A: Like our interns, we expect our scholarship recipients to be shining examples of our values.
We expect you to maintain a good academic record and also to embody the qualities of a leader.
We want to hear about the things you’re learning – so we’ll ask you to provide us with an update
once per quarter. We also require our scholarship recipient to be available to work for Mourant
Ozannes for a minimum of four weeks during the summer holiday (this will be a paid position)
to give them some proper work experience to complement their scholastic studies.
Q: Can you offer advice to students who are lucky enough to be selected for the interview process?
A: Come prepared! We’ll already have seen your application and your resume, and if you’ve made
it to the interview stage, we’re already impressed. Be prepared to go further and really show us
why you are the best candidate to be an ambassador for Mourant Ozannes.
Learn, train and grow with us. At Mourant
Ozannes we are committed to the community
and as part of that commitment we recognize
that the young students of today will become
the future leaders of tomorrow. We believe that
graduate support doesn’t just start with what
happens after you finish school, but rather
years before through our summer intern programmes,
our scholarship offerings and postschool
training contracts.
Who are we? Mourant Ozannes opened its
doors in Cayman in 2004, however our history
spans back 170 years, to the opening of our
first office in 1842 in St. Peter Port, Guernsey and
we’ve grown to become one of the largest leading
offshore firms in the world. With offices in the
BVI, Cayman, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Jersey and
London, our trainees have an impressive depth
of resources, people and offices to explore and
learn in.
Let us help you. Our Summer Intern Programme
runs yearly from 1 June to the end of August, and
is designed to give 12 students the opportunity to
work within different practice areas during their
three to six week paid internship. Students will
work alongside lawyers, managers and operation
specialists in Litigation, Funds, Finance, Corporate
Services, Business Development (Marketing)
or Operations. The programme incorporates trips
to court, research, drafting and transactional
tasks including workshops designed to bring to
life some of the skills needed to work within the
legal services industry.
From Intern to Scholarship Student. The
Chantal Whittaker Memorial Scholarship was
established to honour Chantal Whittaker, a former
employee who demonstrated a personal commitment
to mentoring, fostering community spirit and
helping young people succeed. Our scholarship
programme is designed to assist students that
wish to pursue a law degree or the PPC/LPC
qualification in Cayman or overseas. Like Chantal,
applicants must be motivated, enthusiastic
and ambitious.
The current 2014/15 Scholarship recipient is Adam
Barrie (pictured below with Cayman Partners, Neal
Lomax, Adam Barrie, Hector Robinson and Hayden
Isbister) and he is currently undertaking his MA in
Law at the University of Bristol Law School in the
United Kingdom. Adam first joined the Mourant
Ozannes team as a Summer Intern and he has
almost completed his second year as a Scholarship
Student and continues to do exceptionally well.
Mourant Ozannes congratulates Adam on all his
hard work over the past year!
Ogier 2014 Scholarship Recipient, Joshua Zimmer
Ogier in Cayman was delighted to announce Joshua Zimmer as their 2014 scholarship recipient.
Mr Joshua Zimmer completed has Bachelor of Laws degree (Honours) from the University of
Liverpool in June 2015 and he also had the privilege to participate in a legal internship with Ogier
where he gained practical experience in private offshore financial and legal practices. Mr Joshua
Zimmer has since commenced his Articles of Clerkship with the firm in September 2015.
“My experience and association with Ogier has been invaluable to the development and furthering
of my legal career. Ogier’s well-structured internship programme granted me the opportunity to
work as a legal intern with the firm and allowed me to gain exposure and knowledge into how
a leading, offshore law firm operates. As the 2014 Ogier scholarship recipient, I was granted the
dedicated support of both partners and associates from within the firm, which greatly assisted me
during the LPC course. Since completing the LPC at the University of Law Bristol, I have been
employed as an Articled Clerk with Ogier. Thus far it has been a very rewarding and stimulating
experience. With Ogier’s continued support and guidance I am certain that I will excel in the next
steps of my legal career.”
“Joshua has made the transition to Articles with both enthusiasm and ability,” said Nick Rogers,
academic grounding that our Articled Clerks gain in their studies, and then to train these young
professionals to apply that core knowledge within a business context in a way that adds value for
our clients. Joshua has embraced this challenge and it is excellent to see his skills develop on a
month by month basis.”
