IMAGINE one week you
are in frosty England,
the next week suffering
the humidity of a full
Queensland summer.
New Dolphins signing
Danny Bridge fits that bill
after arriving at Redcliffe in
November, enduring a hellish
pre-season and working as a
groundsman at the club.
“I thought I was dying,” the
23-year-old backrower said.
“It was a tough few weeks
with the humidity as I couldn’t
breathe.
“But I’m acclimatised now
because after three months
I’m used to it. I would much
rather play and train in the sun
than be in the rain and mist.”
An England under 15 and
under 18 representative,
Bridge had played football as
a professional since he was 18
before making the decision to
come to Australia.
“I had an agent put my
name about in Australia and
Crusher Cleal came back to
me in October and it went
from there,” he said.
“I wanted to see what the
footy was like out here and
test myself in it as well as
travel.
“I was fortunate my missus
Heather felt the same about
travelling and working here
so it was a win for both of us.
“This is the first time I have
had to work as well as train

tough and I was asking
myself, ‘what have I done?.
But the training is so intense
that it’s just like fulltime
professionals rather than
part-time.
“The boys have been all
good even though I’m the
only Englishman here at the
moment as Bobby Goulding
is working on his visa.”
At 98 kilograms and
robust in defence, Bridge has
quickly found his feet with
the Dolphins, making the
opening trial squad against
Burleigh Bears on the Gold
Coast.
“I enjoyed the trial even
though the weather was a bit
like being at home,” he said.
“I thought our defence
was good and the match was
played at a high intensity. I
will be interested to see how
things go on a dry track.
“I played in the secondrow
but anywhere in the
middle of the park is fine
with me.”
Bridge stood out enough
to warrant selection against
Norths at Bishop Park on
February 13 when coach
Adam Mogg brought in
established stars Luke
Capewell, Shane Pumipi and
Tyson Andrews.
Bridge’s English credentials
are strong with a
grounding at Wigan followed
by stints at Warrington,
Bradford (loan) and back to
Warrington as well as
appearances for Ireland in
the 2013 World Cup.
His older brother Chris
turned out for more than 200
matches for Warrington and
now is in the centres for
Super League side Widnes
Vikings.
