Weekends are for winning AUSSIES are notorious for living for the weekend. We work hard and we play hard. Our efforts to do the very best that we can during the week can lead us to be rundown and exhausted by the time the weekend comes around. But that doesn’t stop us from planning our weekends to the fullest. So when the Friday rolls around, we are all but jumping out of our seats with excitement with what the weekend will bring. This month, we wanted to share in this excitement with our members, and what better way than to give away $2000 cash every Friday night. Now that’s a great start to the weekend! We want to share in the excitement Hopping green with egg-citement WHETHER you share your experiences with thousands of people in the main streets of Brisbane, or celebrate quietly within the comfort of your own home, March has two events to circle in red on your calendar. St Patrick’s Day is universally celebrated by all – regardless of your heritage or devotion. While the Dolphins cannot spout strong links to this festive day, we certainly encourage our members who do like to come down to the club and celebrate with friends and family alike. To help the celebrations, our Bunny’s Family Restaurant will be putting on a special meal in honour of this colourful day. with as many members as we can, so to enter is as simple as spending $5 at any of our restaurants, café, bars or bottleshop, or turning over $5 on any electronic gaming machine. Whichever way you chose to spend your money here at the club, be sure to hand over your card to our friendly staff when you make a purchase, or have your membership card interested into the gaming machines while you’re playing. Your tickets accumulate automatically and are stored in our virtual barrel. They begin accruing from 10am on Friday morning and continue right through until the last draw at 10pm that same night. After the last winner is found, the barrel is emptied for the next week’s draw – But with St Patrick’s Day only being celebrated one day of the year, the same goes for the offering in Bunny’s – if you miss the day, you’ll miss the great special we have on offer. While you may not see a great deal of publicity on the St Patrick’s Day festivities in your local area, no one can deny the ever-growing to start the fun all over again. Every winner drawn from the barrel must be present to claim their prize. If they are here, they instantly win $250 cash – it’s that easy! Winners will be drawn every 30 minutes, with the first draw taking place at 6.30pm, and the last draw at 10 o’clock that same night. Stadium construction steams ahead WORK on the Dolphin Stadium has jumped into top gear over the past month. Members and visitors would have noticed that excavation work has been full on and that machinery has chewed into the hill and piers have been sunk. We have been fortunate that the weather by and large has been favourable and no major problems have been reported. I’m sure we will run into a hitch somewhere down the track, but for now it’s all systems go for our new-look stadium. ★ ★ ★ ★ I TRAVELLED to Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast last month to watch the Dolphins’ first trial of the 2016 season. Despite the wet conditions in the second half, I came away impressed with coach Adam Mogg and his team’s outing against the Burleigh Bears. Adam gave a run to quite a few newcomers as well as members of the 2014 Colts premiership side in Josh Beehag, Tyson Cleal, Rinsma Saueha, Tyson Gamble and Hayden Hansen. English import Danny Bridge and John Fox, returning from injury, also were strong in our victory while big prop Charlie Faingaa was tremendous in the tough stuff. With a drier track expected at Bishop Park in our second trial, I am expecting big things with Luke Capewell back at the helm with Tyson Andrews also on display. Usual centre Tom Opacic is missing at the moment as he and Aaron Whitchurch have been training with the Broncos in the off-season. For the second successive year, Tom has scored a trip to the World Club Series in England after making the most of his opportunities across the ditch in the Auckland Nines while Aaron scored two tries against the Cowboys in the mud at Bundaberg. Barring injuries to the Broncos star backs, we are expecting Tom and Aaron back in the red and white for the start of the Intrust Super Cup. ★ ★ ★ ★ WITH local government elections on March 19, now is a fitting time to pay tribute to Moreton Bay Regional Shire Mayor Allan Sutherland and Cr Jim Houghton. Our club is grateful to these two representatives for their enormous support over the years as we have taken the Dolphins forward with the development of the Dolphins Health Precinct, Dolphins Central and now Dolphin Stadium. The Dolphins appreciate what they have done over the years and, regardless of the poll result, acknowledge their hard work and dedication to what can be a thankless task. I believe Redcliffe and the shire in general have fared well under Allan’s two terms of leadership with the local economy holding its own and looking to a strong future with the delivery of the Moreton Bay rail link. Jim was a member of our inaugural first grade premiership side and has kept his ties with the local community. He has worked closely with us on several projects and his guidance is invaluable. Cr Koliana Winchester of Division 6 is also a Leagues Club member who has shown considerable interest in pushing sporting interests on the Peninsula. We’ve enjoyed Koliana’s involvement with the football club during her term including her assistance to launch a local Zonta project at our Capras home game last year. ★ ★ ★ ★ OUR club suffered a sad loss last month with the passing of Neil “Gravel” O’kamura. A former Dolphins player and official, Neil was a popular and well-respected member of our club for more than 60 years. During that time he served the club in many roles, including as a player, coach, team manager, doubles seller and committeeman. He was one of those men you could rely on whenever volunteers were needed. It didn’t matter what the occasion whether a working bee or junior barbecue, he would be there to help out. As a player, Neil won premierships for the “Shellgrit” in the 1955 and 1956 Murrumba reserve grade competitions. In 1958, he was a member of the club’s BRL reserve grade side, our first senior side to play in the Brisbane Rugby League competition. The following year he was part of the reserve grade side that beat Souths 14-8 to secure our first senior grade premiership in the BRL. He was instrumental in the formation of the Old Boys and was a long-term president and was patron at the time of his passing. It’s not only the Dolphins who have lost a good man but the Redcliffe community in general. As a long-time member and eventually chairman of the Redcliffe Central Lions Club, Neil was very active in the local community, spending countless hours making lives better for other people. ★ ★ ★ ★ I WOULD like to welcome Redcliffe Smiles aboard as a new Clubhouse member. Dr Alf Le heads up the practice at Dolphins Central and is a passionate football fan. I have been a patient at Redcliffe Smiles and found all the staff to be very professional and provide great service. The Dolphins are looking forward to our association throughout this season.
