These systems are employed within a layered force protection system that includes security personnel trained to maintain situational awareness, aided by a range of other products including military working dogs, under-vehicle scanning mirrors and hand-held or desktop trace explosive detectors. NIIS includes a variety of products with differing characteristics that are added to the Army commander’s tool box. They include mobile, railmounted but relocatable, and fixed-site characteristics. BENEFIT TO THE WARFIGHTER NIIS provides critical force protection measures to safeguard secure areas and protect Soldiers from hidden improvised explosive devices and other contraband not visible to the naked eye. SPECIFICATIONS • Mobile Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System (MVACIS): Truck-mounted system that uses a nuclear source that can penetrate approximately 6.5 inches of steel • Relocatable Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System: Rail-mounted system that uses the same nuclear source as the MVACIS; operates on rails and is employed in static locations or moved within 24 hours to locations where prepared use of rail system eliminates requirement to maintain truck platform • Militarized MVACIS: Uses same gamma source as other VACIS products, but it is mounted on a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle • Militarized MVACIS (ZBV): Van-mounted system that uses backscatter X-ray technology; penetrates approximately one-quarter inch of steel and can be employed in static locations where room is limited • Backscatter Vehicle Mounted Trailer (BVMT): Mobile inspection system for vehicles and cargo that uses same backscatter X-ray technology as the ZBV; BVMT trailer contains the X-ray source and backscatter detectors while the forward scatter trailer contains forward scatter detectors • Personnel Scanners: Use backscatter X-ray technology to nonintrusively scan people for the presence of explosives, weapons or other contraband and are American National Standards Institute compliant; depending on the model, these systems can scan between 140 and 240 people per hour • T-10 Trailer: High-energy gantry vehicle and cargo scanner that uses a 1-Megavolt Liner Accelerator that penetrates up to 4 inches of steel while scanning PROGRAM STATUS • 1QFY13-4QFY13: Replaced obsolete systems that reached their useful life and did not provide stand-off capabilities PROJECTED ACTIVITIES • FY16-FY17: Continue in sustainment 292 UNITED STATES <strong>ARMY</strong>
