The weapon incorporates more than 90 improvements since its inception. In post-combat surveys, 94 percent of Soldiers rate the M4 as an effective weapon system. HQDA G-3/5/7 authorized the M4A1 as the standard carbine for the Army in 2010. In 2014, the Army decided to update its service rifle inventory from a mix of M16A2/A4 Rifles and M4 Carbines to an inventory of 5.56 mm M4A1 Carbines. The M320 Grenade Launcher Module (GLM) is the replacement to all M203 series of grenade launchers on M16 Rifles and M4 Carbines. A modular system, it attaches under the barrel of the rifle or carbine, and can also convert to a stand-alone weapon. The M320 GLM has an integrated leaf sight and improved safety features. It also has a side-loading unrestricted breech to allow the system to fire longer 40 mm low-velocity projectiles (NATO standard and nonstandard). The lightweight M26 12-Gauge Modular Accessory Shotgun System (MASS) attaches to the M4 Carbine and zeroes to the host weapon. It is also designed to operate as a stand-alone system, and comes with a recoil-absorbing, collapsible buttstock. The Picatinny rail mounted on top allows accessory equipment to be mounted on the shotgun. The XM17 Modular Handgun System will replace the Army’s M9 and M11 pistols. The Army is taking a noncaliber-specific approach in seeking the best-value solution through full and open competition among mature nondevelopmental designs in the procurement of a new handgun. BENEFIT TO THE WARFIGHTER The M4/M4A1 Carbine enables a Soldier operating in close quarters to engage targets at extended range with accurate, lethal fire. The M320 enables the Soldier to engage the enemy accurately in daylight or total darkness with a safer, more reliable grenade launcher. It reduces aiming error and increases first-round hit probability. The M26 MASS enables Soldiers to transition between lethal and less-than-lethal fires and adds the capability of a separate shotgun without carrying a second weapon. The XM17, the Army’s next handgun, will be more capable than the M9 pistol in the areas of lethality, terminal effects, ergonomics, reliability, durability and maintainability.
