ISLAMOPHOBIA IN France
THE AUTHOR
Oliver Esteves, is a professor of British studies at Lille University. He works
on the sociology and history of immigration and race relations in Britain, and on
British intellectuals (George Orwell, Bertrand Russell). He is the author of Une
Histoire populaire du boycott, Paris : L’Harmattan, 2006 (two volumes). He edited
with Denis Lacorne et Emmanuelle Le Texier Les Politiques de la diversité :
expériences anglaise et américaine (Paris : Presses de Sciences-Po, 2010). He also
published De l’invisibilité à l’islamophobie: musulmans britanniques (1945-2010),
Presses de Sciences-Po, 2011, with a preface by Gérard Noiriel. He has edited, with
Jean-Jacques Rosat (Collège de France) and translated into French, with Claire Esteves,
Bertrand Russell’s World War I texts: Le Pacifisme et la révolution, texts politiques
(1914-1918), Marseille: Agone, 2014. His last book is with Sébastien Lefait,
La Question raciale dans les séries américaines (Presses de Sciences-Po, 2014).
He is currently doing research on the history of (ethnic) bussing in England for a
book entitled Babylon by Bus? Dispersal and the Desegregation of English schools
(1960s-1970s), which will be published by a British press by 2018-9. He frequently
publishes press articles in Le Monde, Libération, Rue89, Huffington Post (France),
on issues of racism and Islamophobia in France and Britain. He is a member of
