hate crime legislation that acknowledges one’s religious identity as being a basis
upon which one may be targeted. As noted above, the heavy lifting has been
done in this regard and government must be encouraged to take action.
• Civil society actors must also push for legislative change in the context of school
enrolment policies so that all members of Irish society are treated fairly when
accessing education. Relatedly, the government must be encouraged to draft a
policy that ensures the rights of religious minorities to manifest their faith are respected
in the school context and not left to the preferences of individual boards
of management or principals.
• Civil society actors must engage with Irish media actors/outlets in terms of publication/broadcast
standards in order to reduce/minimise the use of racialising
discourses vis-à-vis Muslims and other minority communities. Muslim communities
are not ‘over there’ but part of Irish and broader European society, this
needs to be the norm reflected in media content.
