RETAIL
STRATEGY
Fundamental gut: Retail-Konzepte haben
ihren Ursprung in der Marke und
werden in Zielgruppen-, Trend- und
Standortanalysen fundiert. Mit der passenden
Strategie für die Architektur einer
Retailfläche werden Einkaufserlebnisse
zu Markenerlebnissen.
Solid foundation: retail concepts start
with the brand and are based on target
audience-, trend- and location-analyses.
With the right architectural strategy
for a retail space, shopping experiences
become brand experiences.
RETAIL
DESIGN
Schöner Shoppen: Ein relevantes Design
schafft fließende, emotionale Erlebnisse,
die den Konsumenten in direkten
Kontakt mit der Marke treten lassen
und ist als modulares Konzept für spätere
Flagship- und Brand-Stores sowie
Shop-in-Shop-Systeme funktioniert.
Better shopping: relevant design creates
fluid emotional experiences that
bring consumers into direct contact
with the brand and functions as a modular
concept for future flagship and
brand stores and shop-in-shop systems.
MUNIKATION
Auf den Punkt: Die Kommunikation am
Ort des Warenangebotes dient der Verkaufsförderung
und umfasst das Visual
Merchandising und weitere Services.
Alles kundenorientiert umgesetzt direkt
am Point of Sale.
To the point: communication where
products are offered facilitates sales
and includes visual merchandising and
other services. Everything is implemented
directly at the point of sale in a customer-friendly
way.
POP-UP STORE
Nur für kurze Zeit: Temporärer Shop
an einem ungewöhnlichen Ort, in dem
auf provisorische, überraschende Weise
Produkte kleiner Labels und großer
Marken inszeniert werden. Ziel ist es,
ohne große Werbung die Neugier des
Kunden zu wecken und ihm ein unvergessliches
Einkaufserlebnis zu bieten.
For a limited time only: a temporary
shop in an unusual location, where
small labels and major brands are presented
short-term in a surprising way.
The aim is to peak the curiosity of customers
with minimal advertising and
provide an unforgettable shopping
experience.
P
Highlight: a brand’s most prominent
store, where exclusive features such
as a prized location, dynamic architecture,
exceptional service and an
extensive product range communicate
and reinforce the philosophy behind
the brand.
I
MONO BRAND
STORE
Klarer Fokus: Ladengeschäft, in dem
das Produktsortiment einer einzelnen
Marke präsentiert und verkauft wird.
Die architektonische Gestaltung orientiert
sich einheitlich am Corporate
Design der Marke.
Clear focus: a retail store where a single
brand’s product range is presented
and sold. The architectural design
is uniquely tailored to the brand’s corporate
design.
O
PUBLIC
RELATIONS
Gut kommuniziert: Magazine, Blogs,
Zeitungen, Social Media sind relevante
Meinungsmacher, die es im Rahmen
einer PR Kampagne zu erreichen gilt.
Dazu braucht es eine PR Kampagne,
die zwischen Marke und Medienkanal in
einen kommunikativen Austausch tritt.
Effective communication: magazines,
blogs, newspapers, social media are
relevant opinion makers that need to
be reached in the context of a PR campaign.
This requires a PR campaign
that serves as a communicational platform
between the brand and the media
channel.
G
SHOP-IN-SHOP
Klein und fein: Mit Shop-in-Shop-System
wird die eigenständig gebrandete
Präsenz von Produkten einer Marke
im Retail-System einer anderen Marke
bezeichnet. Hier gilt, sich von konkurrierenden
Systemen der Mitbewerber
abzuheben.
Small is beautiful: a shop-in-shop system
is the independent branded presentation
of a brand’s products in the
retail system of another brand. The
goal here is to set oneself apart from
the competing systems of competitors.
SHOP WINDOW
Auf den ersten Blick: Die Fenster- und
Fassadengestaltung zur Präsentation
von Marke und Produkten kommt im
Retail Design eine wichtige Bedeutung
zu. Der erste Eindruck zählt und entscheidet
darüber, ob der Konsument
den Laden besuchen möchte.
At first glance: the display window and
façade design for presenting the brand
and its products play an important
role in retail design. First impressions
count and influence whether the consumer
wants to come inside the store.
CORPORATE DESIGN
An important part of the corporate design included producing an entirely new
logo. Getränke Hoffmann’s blue and red make up the primary colours, where
red is used for accents. Intermittent curves give the Hoffi logo its individual
character, and the handwritten design of the word »Mein« (My) gives it a personal
touch.
The product range is accompanied by
offerings like sandwiches and coffeeto-go
so that the customer can find
everything from breakfast items to an
evening beer at his Hoffi. The focus
here is on local products. New services
like cargo bike rental for transporting
crates, rapid bottle cooling, new opening
times and ordering cold drinks via
SMS round out the customer-friendly
store concept.
TYPO
The typographical combination of constructed geometric lettering and traditional
looking handwriting creates a striking contrast and also serves as the
design pattern. The stamped texture pattern is used for all applications outside
the architectural design, such as packaging, employee uniforms and external
communications. The architectural design maintains the personal contact
factor with integrated signboards, display tables and recommendation
signage. Steel, maritime pine and high gloss tiles, as well as dark greys, matte
whites and blues, and accent lighting, create a modern, welcoming atmosphere.
TRUST ME
During conception and planning phases, the experienced team at dan pearlman
examined how eyeglasses are purchased from all angles. Here, coming up
with solutions for how to transfer online processes offline to fixed-location retail
was the consistent focus of the creative developmental process. The result
comprises the architectural design of the store and facade, the colour and materials
concept as well as furniture and space planning.
SERVICES
Bezug zum Online-Angebot hergestellt.
Die Brillen sind analog zu verschiedenen
Suchfiltern im Webshop
nach Formen sortiert, die jeweils mit
unterschiedlichen Gesichtstypen harmonieren.
Dem Kunden wird damit eine
optimale Orientierung geboten und ein
Umfeld, in dem er selbstständig auswählen
kann. Zu jedem Produkt findet der
Kunde eine Mitnahmekarte, die wichtige
Informationen wie die passende Gesichtsform,
Marke und den Preis noch
The spatial communication strategy,
featuring highlight presentations, campaign
boards explaining the Mister
offerings. The product range is organized
according to types of glasses,
each of which fit a specific facial type.
In addition, upon entering the store, the
customer is provided with a tablet that
can be filled with four pairs of glasses
he likes best. Each pair of glasses
comes with a card containing important
details on the right facial shape,
brand and price.
FEEL HOME
Der Kunde wird von einer transparenten
Raumführung mit klaren Strukturen
empfangen. Eichenholz in Verbindung
mit mattem Weiß und Grau sowie Akzente
in Anthrazit und Grün unterstützen
die offene Raumwirkung, so dass
eine moderne und trotzdem behagliche
Atmosphäre entsteht. Das Brandlogo,
eine stilisierte Brille, wird in das räumliche
Konzept integriert und findet sich
auf der zentralen Rückwand im Laden
wieder.
A transparent space featuring distinct
structures welcomes customers. Oak
combined with matt white and grey,
and accents in anthracite and green,
create a space that feels open, producing
a modern yet cosy atmosphere.
The brand logo, a stylized pair of glasses,
is integrated into the spatial concept
and shows up again on the back
wall. The latter plays a central role: its
curved shape and indirect lighting via
a perforation pattern give it the look of
a curtain that is opening up the shop
for the customer. Another highlight is
the lounge, where Scandinavian design
chairs, tablets and magazines welcome
customers, inspiring them and providing
STORYTELLING
IM RETAIL
DIE DRAMATURGIE MUSS STIMMEN
Trends und Perspektiven im Retail
Design
Enkaufen im Ladengeschäft gewinnt
zunehmend eine Erlebnisdimension,
weg von der reinen Bedarfsdeckung.
Wodurch ist dieses »Shoppen« charakterisiert?
Letztendlich geht es beim Einkaufserlebnis
um Storytelling. Wie erzählen wir
eine Geschichte rund um das Produkt
oder die Marke, die eine Relevanz für
den Kunden hat? Damit geht die Fragestellung
einher, wie wir Identifikationsebenen
schaffen, so dass Kunden
Anknüpfungspunkte finden, die sie in
ihr Leben integrieren können.
Was bedeutet das in der Praxis für
den Ladenbau? Wie kreiert der stationäre
Händler eine Atmosphäre des
Wohlgefühls, der Inspiration und der
Verführung?
Die Atmosphäre eines Shops kann man
mit einem Bühnenbild vergleichen. Wie
bei einem Theaterstück müssen die dramaturgische
erzählt wird. Der Kunde wird
auf eine Customer Journey geschickt,
auf der die Stimmung aus Licht, Duft,
Menschen und Materialien stimmen
muss, damit er sich wohl und inspiriert
fühlt. Zudem ist dabei wichtig, dass
er das wiederfindet, was ihm vorher
– etwa bei der Darstellung im Internet –
versprochen wurde.
Welches sind denn die aktuellen
Trends beim Ladenbau, etwa mit Blick
auf Materialien, Warenpräsentation
und Wegeführung? Woher stammen
diese Trends?
Die Trends der Architektur sind aus den
Wohn- und Modewelten inspiriert oder
auch umgekehrt, man denke da z. B. an
den Kupfer- oder Betontrend. Bei der
Präsentation kommt es immer auf das
Segment an, d.h. wir müssen uns fragen,
ob wir einen Discounter oder einen
Shop im Luxusbereich gestalten.
Bei der Wegeführung geht die Tendenz
weg von einer klaren, rationalen
Ordnung hin zu einem Entdecken, es
wird emotionaler und mit mehr Spannung
gestaltet.
INTERVIEWS
bieten.
Ambiente und Inszenierung sind offenbar
Grundbedingungen für künftigen
Markterfolg. Braucht es im Handel
aber nicht gerade beim Service
einen Kulturwandel?
Ja, auf jeden Fall. Gerade der Bereich
des Customer Relationship Managements
wird uns stärker bewegen, indem
neue Technologien wie etwa die
Einbindung von Apps das Personal bei
der individuellen Kundenberatung unterstützen.
Um dabei für den Arbeitnehmer
attraktiv sein zu können, heißt
das auch, dass stationäre Unternehmen
sich stärker als Arbeitgeber-Marke positionieren
müssen.
THE DRAMATIZATION HAS TO
Shopping in stores is increasingly becoming
an experiential dimension, and
is moving away from the simple fulfilment
of demand. What characterizes
this kind of »shopping«?
Ultimately, the shopping experience is
about storytelling. How do we tell a story
about the product or the brand that
resonates with the customer? Related
to this is the question how do we create
identification layers so that customers
find points of connection that they can
incorporate into their lives.
The shopper is sent on a customer
journey, where the atmosphere is
made up of the right lighting, scents,
people and materials, so that he or she
feels comfortable and inspired. In addition,
it is important that shoppers find
what they were promised earlier – for
example how the product was represented
on the Internet.
What then are the current trends in
store design, for example regarding
materials, product presentation and
store routing? Where do these trends
come from?
Architectural trends are inspired by the
home environment and fashion worlds,
or vice versa, an example here is
the trend toward copper or concrete.
For presentations it always depends on Yes, absolutely. The field of customer
What does this mean for store design the segment, i.e. we have to ask ourselves
If we can assume that the Internet has
taken over most of the function of
retail’s future competitors?
The competitor of retail stores is the
leisure industry, which beckons with a
broad range of offerings including museums,
zoos and events. For us this means
that we use a brand to generate and
design experiences capable of telling
the customer a story, inspiring him and
offering him an attractive alternative.
Ambience and presentation are obviously
basic conditions for future market
EXPANSIONSSTRATEGIEN FÜR
MARKEN VON MARKENEXPERTEN
Marc Eisenbach, Head of Strategy
& Communications bei dan pearlman,
über Expansionsstrategien im internationalen
Markt
Warum setzen Unternehmen auf
Expansion?
Expansion ist für Unternehmen, die
wachsen wollen, unumgänglich. Nur
global agierende Marken können global
erfolgreich sein. In einer globalisierten
Welt verspricht die Beherrschung des
globalen Marktes den größtmöglichen
unternehmerischen Erfolg.
Was brauchen Unternehmen, um
international erfolgreich zu sein?
Was ist deine persönliche Expertise?
Seit 2015 arbeite ich wieder in Berlin bei
dan pearlman. Zuvor habe ich 10 Jahre
in London gelebt und gearbeitet. Von
London aus durfte ich die Europa-Expansion
der drei Marken mit dem größten
Umsatz pro Quadratmeter betreuen:
Apple, Tiffany und Abercrombie &
Fitch. Meine Erfahrungen und Kenntnisse
der Märkte reichen vom anglo-amerikanischen
Markt über Europa bis nach
Middle East.
Ebenso weit gefasst ist mein Netzwerk
an verlässlichen Partnern. Zudem bin
ich nicht nur in Deutschland als Architekt
eingetragen, sondern auch in England
und Frankreich.
Hast du ein Motto für deine Arbeit?
Design is just more than just designing
… it’s about the process and the relationships
you discover and establish
during this process.
entsprechenden Expansionsgebietes
sind dabei unerlässlich. Ein gutes
lokales Netzwerk innerhalb aller Zielländer
ist dabei für eine Expansion unbedingt
von Vorteil. Unrealistische Erwartungen
an den Expansionserfolg
lassen sich insbesondere vermeiden,
wenn man mit einem erfahrenen Partner
zusammenarbeitet. Dieser Partner
sollte möglichst alle Leistungen aus einer
Hand liefern: von strategischer Planung,
über das Design und die Ausführungsplanung,
bis hin zu Haustechnik,
Brandschutz und Behörden-Handling.
Wer einen Markt wirklich kennt, kann
bereits bei der strategischen Planung
Fehler vermeiden, deren Behebung später
viel Geld kosten würde.
Ein Beispiel: plant man etwa in Österreich
ein Lager für einen Store, ist es
Vorschrift, dass dies Tageslicht hat.
So etwas muss man einfach wissen, um
das Design eines Ladenkonzepts entsprechend
anpassen zu können. Mit
entsprechender Marktkenntnis lässt
sich also pro-aktiv arbeiten und früh-
Zum einen müssen Unternehmen ihr
Geschäft verstehen und zum anderen
den Markt, in welchem sie aktiv werden
wollen. Interkulturelle Kompetenz
EXPANSION STRATEGIES FOR
BRANDS BY BRAND EXPERTS
Marc Eisenbach, Head of Strategy
& Communications at dan pearlman,
on expansion strategies in international
markets
Why do companies focus on expansion?
Expansion is inevitable for companies
wanting growth. Only global brands can
succeed globally. In a globalized world,
mastering the global market promises
the greatest entrepreneurial success.
What do companies need in order to
be successful internationally?
Firstly, companies need to understand
Design is just more than just designing
their business and, secondly, the market
… it’s about the process and the relationships
they want to be active in. Intercultural
expertise and a professional knowledge
and get started earlier.
during this process.
64 of the market where the compa-
65
ny is seeking to expand are essential.
A good local network within all target
countries slated for expansion is necessarily
an advantage. Unrealistic expectations
regarding a successful expansion
can be avoided especially when
working with an experienced partner.
This partner should be able to provide
almost all services from one source:
from strategic planning, to design and
implementation planning, to building
services, fire protection and dealing
with local officials. Market familiarity
makes it possible to avoid in advance
the kinds of errors made during the strategic
planning phase that lead to higher
costs down the road. For example,
storage rooms in Austria must be designed
so that they have daylight. You
simply need to know this in order to
be able to adapt the store design accordingly.
With proper knowledge of
the market you can work proactively
open the
What is your personal expertise?
Since 2015 I’ve been working again in
ten years. From London, I was fortunate
to have overseen the European expansion
Nicole Srock.Stanley, Gründerin und Geschäftsführerin
bei dan pearlman über
stationären Handel.
Wie steht es um den stationären Handel?
Alles was digitalisiert werden kann, wird
digitalisiert. Der stationäre Handel hat
lange geglaubt, dass nur Bücher, Musik
oder Reisen von der Digitalisierung
betroffen sind. Doch das war nur der
Anfang. Diese Entwicklung ist noch
längst nicht abgeschlossen. Der stationäre
Handel musste erkennen, dass die
Digitalisierung auch vor dem Schnitzel
nicht halt gemacht hat. Auch das
Schnitzel ist heute digital und wird roh
oder fertig zubereitet bis an die Wohnungstür
geliefert. Neue Serviceangebote,
mobile Devices, leistungsfähigere
Netze und eine optimierte Logistik spielen
dabei eine fördernde Rolle. Früher
wurde nur auf Paletten mittels LKWs
transportiert, heute entstehen Inner
City Hubs und Store Hubs von denen
Fahrradkuriere zur Same Day Delivery
Suche. Deshalb muss ich, um erfolgreich
online Geschäft zu tätigen, vor allem für
meine Zielgruppe relevant sein. Dabei
helfen eine spitze Aufstellung, ein einzigartiges
Sortiment und ein Höchstmaß
an Funktionalität. Wenn ich über
ein klar kuratiertes Angebot eine Aussage
treffe, die persönlichen Mehrwert
bietet oder zu einer speziellen Lebensweise
passt, dann treffe ich den Nerv
meiner Zielgruppe. Dies kann auf den
Anglershop oder die Designertaschen
gleichermaßen zutreffen.
Wenn ich Freizeit habe, dann will ich
raus und mich inspirieren lassen. Dann
will ich etwas erleben und nicht gelangweilt
werden. Im stationären Handel
wird deswegen alles scheitern, was
nur auf Bedarfsdeckung ausgerichtet
ist. Schließlich konkurriere ich mit dem
Mitbewerber um die freie und knappe
Zeit meines Konsumenten. Deshalb
muss der Handel aus der Freizeitindustrie
lernen. Es geht darum, die Verweildauer
in meinem Geschäft zu erhöhen,
denn mit höherer Verweildauer
steigt nicht nur der Umsatz, sondern
auch das Einzugsgebiet meines Ladens.
Der Schlüssel zum Erfolg jedes
stationären Geschäfts ist also mehr
vermeiden. Eine verlockende
digitale Warenwelt sollte nicht
auf ein liebloses Angebot in der realen
Welt treffen und der größte Fehler des
stationären Handels ist es, die Mechanismen
des Online-Handels zu kopieren
und das Erlebnisshopping wieder
zu digitalisieren, z.B. durch interaktive
Schaufenster. Im echten Laden läuft alles
Digitale als Assistenzprogramm im
Hintergrund, um das Einkaufserlebnis
optimal zu unterstützen.
Was macht einen stationären Laden
besonders?
Wenn ein Laden nicht durch Umsatz
pro Quadratmeter geprägt wird, sondern
mehr Erlebnis pro Quadratmeter
bietet. Dazu gehören persönliche Beratung,
kundenfreundlicher Service, eine
Vernetzung in der Community, Mitarbeiter
mit einer sehr guten Qualifikation,
wahre Kennerschaft und Liebe zum
Detail, Kundennähe und Kundenpflege.
Echte Tugenden auf die sich der Handel
besinnen sollte.
Was kann ich als stationärer Händler
außerdem tun?
DAN PEARLMAN — THE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE
EXPERIENCE PER SQUAREMETER
Nicole Srock.Stanley, founder and CEO
at dan pearlman, on stationary retail.
How is retail doing?
Anything that can be digitized will be
digitized. Retail has long believed that
only books, music or travel are impacted
by digitization. But that was only
the beginning. This development is far
from complete. Retail had to recognize
that digitization didn’t even stop at the
schnitzel. Today, even the schnitzel is
digital and is delivered to your door
uncooked or ready to eat. New services,
mobile devices, more powerful
networks and optimized logistics help
promote this. Earlier, things were transported
only on pallets by truck. Today
swarms of bicycle couriers make same
day deliveries from inner-city hubs and
store hubs.
Does every stationary retailer now
have to run its own online shop?
brand products or the largest suppliers
of their own brands. Their relevance for
customers makes them a market power
and a presence on Google and Amazon,
which cannot be beat with any
amount of money in the world for SEO
optimization. However, as soon as relevant,
out-of-the-box digital solutions
are offered, digitally accelerating one’s
own retail will be essential.
As a retailer how can I optimize my
business – online or offline?
If I’m in need of something specific,
then I start looking for it on the Internet.
Therefore, in order be successful
as a business online, I have to make myself
relevant for my target audience.
Helpful here are a great presentation,
a unique product range and a high degree
of functionality. When I come up
with a statement about a clearly curated
product offer that adds personal
value or fits a special lifestyle, then I
really connect with my audience. This
applies equally to the fishing shop or
designer bags alike.
When I have free time, I want to get out
and be inspired. I want to experience
something and not be bored. In retail
stores, everything that is only targeted
to meet demand will fail. Ultimately,
I’m competing with my competitors
for my customers’ brief amount of free
time. Therefore, retail has to take a page
from the leisure industry. The aim is to
increase the amount of time that consumers
spend in my shop, because more
time not only increases sales, but also
my store’s sphere of influence. Accordingly,
the key to success of any stationary
retail business is more experience
per square meter.
If I’m active in both channels – online and
INTERVIEWS
per sqm
the transcript. A tempting digital world
of products should not be paired with
a loveless offer in the real world. And
the biggest mistake that stationary
retail stores make is copying the mechanisms
of online commerce and re-digitizing
the experience of shopping, for
example, through interactive display
windows. In real stores everything digital
runs as an assistant program in the
background in order to facilitate the
best shopping experience.
What makes a stationary shop special?
When a store is not guided by sales per
square meter, but offers more experience
per square meter. This includes
personal consultation, customer-friendly
service, a network in the community,
employees with very good qualifications,
true expertise and a love for
details, customer proximity and customer
care. Genuine virtues that retail
should take the time to reflect on.
