Eastern Province 12 In the eastern part of the Kingdom and on the Arabian Gulf lie cities and governorates such as Aldamam, Alkhobar, Althahran, Algbeel, Alkhafagy, Ras Tanoura, and AlQatif. Geographically, the Eastern Region is the biggest region in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where its desert plain stretches out from the Arabian Gulf shores to the Dahna’a desert. Due to its geographical location, its coast and its weather, the Eastern Region was the ultimate civilizations hub, where peoples of different origins lived in harmony for long periods of time. Thus, it’s now one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The East Coast Whenever you are at any of the east coast front cities, you will find places full of joy and serenity, and the most popular and most visited beach, “Half Moon Beach”, is a perfect example. Alkhobar and Aldamam’s Corniche, parks in Algbeel and Ras Tanoura, children’s playgrounds, dedicated jogging and cycling lanes, resorts and summer houses are all some of the features you will find when you visit the east coast, making it the best family vacation destination in Saudi Arabia. Another beautiful scene that you are likely to find on the east coast is people fishing and fishing boats. Fishing and deep sea diving for pearls have always been the most appreciated professions in the past, yet many people still practice them nowadays, aiming at preserving their historical significance for new generations. The Dareen Island It is one of the most important islands on the waters of the Arabian Gulf, and is known for its beautiful ancient buildings and architectural structures. The old Dareen port, which faces the historical Dareen Palace; Muhamad Abdelwahab Alfayhany Palace, is considered the oldest marine port in the world. A trip to the Dareen Island will expose different worlds of breathtaking marine life to its visitors, in addition to the eye captivating views of traditional ancient dhows, or sailing vessels. Science and Cultural Adventures The Eastern Region is abundant with scientific centers, which makes it a favorite destination for kids and adults. One of the prominent scientific centers is the Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Center for Science and Technology, which is located on Alkhobar Corniche. The center has several scientific, astrological and entertainment halls. Traditional Markets(souks) The Eastern Region is famous for its traditional markets of local handicrafts. The Thursday traditional market in Qatif is the most popular market for antiques and historical pieces shopping, while Alhamam market in Aldamam is the oldest specialty market selling a vast number of bird species and animals.
The Tarout Castle and the Old Village This historical landmark, which is located in the 5,000-year-old city of Downtown Tarout, is famous for its traditional ancient architecture and the small houses surrounding it. These houses were built on the ruins of past civilizations and settlements, and you can easily get a glimpse of them from far away. Public Gardens and Parks The diving centers on the east coast host several marine trips that are run all year long, such as fishing trips, commercial diving trips on the Arabian Gulf coast and to islands like; Jana, Jreed, Kran and Kreen. For more adventurous trips, a trip to the “Half Moon Beach” ruins, or the sinking ships on the Dammam, Alkhobar and Al- Qatif ports will definitely give you an adrenaline rush.
