<strong>2016</strong><br />
AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL<br />
COFFEE AWARDS<br />
Eight Champion Trophies were presented to<br />
winners from Western Australia, Victoria, ACT,<br />
Queensland and Indonesia at the <strong>2016</strong> Australian<br />
International Coffee Awards (AICA), with<br />
trophies for Cold Brew Coffee and Direct Trade<br />
or Microlot Coffee introduced to the awards for<br />
the first time.<br />
Jakarta’s Tanamera Coffee Indonesia<br />
celebrated their second consecutive<br />
win of Champion International<br />
Roaster, as well as being awarded<br />
the Champion Filter Coffee for<br />
their Malabar Natural, whilst<br />
ACT-based roasters Bean!Roasters<br />
by Cosmorex took home top honours<br />
receiving the Champion Australian<br />
Roaster trophy.<br />
Winning both of the new awards,<br />
Queensland’s Bellissimo Coffee<br />
were named Champion Cold Brew<br />
Coffee & Champion Direct Trade<br />
or Microlot Coffee Trophy for<br />
the CHNO Panama. The CHNO<br />
Panama is lovingly brewed by<br />
hand from a high quality Panama<br />
Giesha coffee sourced directly<br />
from the outstanding farmers at<br />
Los Cantares Estate.<br />
Indicative of the wide-spanning,<br />
high-quality coffee production in<br />
Australia and the truly national<br />
nature of the awards, Western<br />
Australia’s Grouch & Co and<br />
Grindhouse were awarded Champion<br />
Espresso (Diamond Mule) and<br />
Champion Milk Based Coffee<br />
(Grindhouse Blend) respectively,<br />
whilst Grinders Coffee, based in<br />
Victoria took home Champion Soy<br />
Based Coffee for their single origin<br />
blend Fix Three Origin Fairtrade<br />
Organic Coffee.<br />
The first and only international<br />
coffee roasting competition in<br />
Australia, the awards received<br />
658 entries from 143 local and<br />
international coffee roasters in <strong>2016</strong>,<br />
including coffees from New Zealand,<br />
Malaysia, Hong Kong, Indonesia,<br />
Korea, Singapore, Canada, USA<br />
and UK.<br />
A total of 234 medals including 10<br />
gold, 68 silver and 156 bronze were<br />
awarded over four days of judging<br />
which took place at Melbourne<br />
Showgrounds, with a panel of<br />
30 industry experts assessing<br />
the entries.<br />
The awards were presented as a<br />
partner event of the Melbourne<br />
International Coffee Expo Launch<br />
which was held at The Meat Market,<br />
North Melbourne in March.<br />
