When it came to baseball, Jason Maas ’81 was a bit of<br />
a late bloomer.<br />
“People wouldn’t have looked at me in high school<br />
and said ‘this kid is going to get drafted,’” Maas said.<br />
When Maas got to college, however, things began to<br />
click – in a big way.<br />
In 1984, as a junior at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Maas<br />
led the nation in triples (11), and was an All-West<br />
Region selection and an All-American. He still holds<br />
the Cal Poly SLO record for career triples (18) and<br />
ranks second in stolen bases for the 1985 season (32<br />
stolen bases) behind Ozzie Smith. “I had little power,<br />
but plenty of speed,” Maas said.<br />
As a senior, Maas was drafted in the 10th round of<br />
the 1985 Major League Baseball draft by the New<br />
