TRAVELLIVE 10-2016

Friday afternoon, I’m going home after a busy week with tons of deadlines and articles from our contributors. A few stairs are long enough to make me tired. I’m trying to climb step by step. Suddenly, I catch the scent of baked cakes in the air. Yeah, that is Joseph. This enchanting scent must come from the kitchen of the “conjurer”, Joseph! All my weariness seems to disappear. I run quickly up the last stairs, calling out loud “Uncle Joseph”. Upon coming in, I hug him from his back. Wow, the sweet smell of cream cheese is still lingering on his hair. “The conjurer of cakes” is the nickname I have given Joseph, an old member of my family. Thanks to his career and hobbies, he has had chances to travel around the world. He has cooked the delicious dishes he has learned on his travels since I was a little girl. He also tells me how he “met” those dishes. I usually enjoy the dishes while listening to his endless exciting stories. No matter how mature I am, his dishes and culinary stories are always miraculous. Now, we are preparing the last plates for our dinner today while happily telling funny stories. This time, he is the listener as I’m sharing with him my recipes and my passion for cooking. Actually, in that busy life, what could be more important than the excitement we have whenever enjoying or cooking scrumptious dishes? Why don’t you share with us your own excitement during your culinary journeys? Box: Experience your exciting and memorable culinary journeys in Vietnam and around the world.

FURTHER
INFORMATION:
- Directions: To visit
the Yodpiman River
Walk, you can go to
BTS to Saphan Taskin
wharf, find the place of
Yodpiman ships or travel
by taxi to Talad Pak
Klong, cross the market,
and enter the complex
from the back gate.
- Explore: If you are
a fan of afternoon tea,
pastries, and coffee,
don't miss a chance
to visit Casa Lapin to
experience one of the
favorite places to chill
out for Bangkok locals.
An artisanal flower shop
is nestled in front of the
cafä. You can simply
knock the door and ask
to explore that lovely
world.
PAD THAI (sweet sour fried noodles)
- a popular dish in every corner of
Thailand - also comes with a plate
of chili powder. Whenever I go to
eat Pad Thai with Penpisut, my local
friend. She adds a bowl of chili powder
to her plate without batting an eye.
Sometimes she even asks for more
chili! She probably knows how much
spice she can tolerate. Maybe it's how
she awakens her tastebuds.
For me, I usually order a plate of
mango sticky rice after enjoying Pad
Thai. It's best to enjoying mango
sticky rice at Food Republic which is
designed like New York's SOHO with
raw materials after wandering around
Siam Center. This makes me feel that
I'm eating my hometown's dish at the
center of the world.
Another location I love in Bangkok is
the Yodpiman River Walk on the bank
M a t t h e w T o n g
Jon Siegel
of the Chao Phraya River. As Yodpiman
was just opened in 2014, many locals
have not visited this entertainment
and restaurant complex. Unlike the
busy Asiatique, at Yodpima, you can
have traditional Thai food at Je Ngor,
Japanese food at Ootoya, or explore the
coffee shops, jewelry shops, or lovely
stores selling handicrafts.
One more reason I love Yodpiman is
that I feel compelled to walk through
the complex's back yard to visit the
famous fl ower market, Talad Pak
Klong. You can follow this wide
spectrum of colors and scents to
Bangkok's Old Town where you can see
locals freely enjoying their dishes or a
quiet lunch. Save this simple moment
as you can not fi nd anything like this at
any food court in the shopping malls
or chains of the impressively decorated
restaurants in Siam or Sukhumvit.
