on YouTube, the amount <strong>of</strong> labour <strong>and</strong> product <strong>in</strong>volved... I’m not knock<strong>in</strong>g<br />
it but even <strong>in</strong> the natural space there are these almost unatta<strong>in</strong>able ideals,<br />
these amaz<strong>in</strong>gly impossible photos <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>credible afros – it’s all f<strong>in</strong>e but it’s<br />
still with<strong>in</strong> some bigger story about <strong>beauty</strong> <strong>and</strong> acceptability. It’s a different<br />
flavour <strong>of</strong> juice to the weave <strong>and</strong> heavy make-up world but still juice.<br />
SD: I want to change tack a little <strong>and</strong> ask about the effort, or not, that goes<br />
<strong>in</strong>to the <strong>beauty</strong> practices you’ve described. Fatma, right at the start <strong>of</strong> the<br />
conversation, used the word ‘<strong>in</strong>dulg<strong>in</strong>g’ to describe when she engages <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>beauty</strong>; Val described a lot <strong>of</strong> effort, Yew<strong>and</strong>e too; Aleya spoke <strong>of</strong> the time<br />
for wax<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> so on. So the question is: Is <strong>beauty</strong> work? Is it leisure? Does<br />
it depend?<br />
AK: For me <strong>beauty</strong> is def<strong>in</strong>itely work. I certa<strong>in</strong>ly do not enjoy the process,<br />
but I do enjoy the outcome. So I pick <strong>and</strong> choose. To be honest, I would so<br />
much rather be read<strong>in</strong>g a great book or walk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the forest or even dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
at a bar than sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the salon or be<strong>in</strong>g waxed. It feels like a chore <strong>and</strong><br />
sometimes I resent both the time <strong>and</strong> cost. But I love look<strong>in</strong>g at my shock<strong>in</strong>g<br />
p<strong>in</strong>k nails or smooth legs. It feels like a necessary trial. Indulg<strong>in</strong>g for me would<br />
be go<strong>in</strong>g to get a massage or a body scrub or someth<strong>in</strong>g like that. I certa<strong>in</strong>ly<br />
make my decisions based on the time it will take <strong>and</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />
requirement – for example I would love to dye my hair, but the thought <strong>of</strong><br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g it exhausts me! Maybe my reluctance with certa<strong>in</strong> <strong>beauty</strong> rituals<br />
is less to do with some sort <strong>of</strong> ideology <strong>and</strong> more to do with laz<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />
FE: I agree with Aleya that <strong>beauty</strong> needs effort, still the result is celebrated. I<br />
enjoy the outcome <strong>and</strong> enjoy myself.<br />
SD: What about pa<strong>in</strong>? <strong>The</strong>re’s the say<strong>in</strong>g ‘<strong>beauty</strong> is pa<strong>in</strong>.’ For me, with th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
like wax<strong>in</strong>g, apart from th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g about the cost, <strong>in</strong>convenience, my political<br />
ambivalence about it, slight embarrassment about ly<strong>in</strong>g on a table <strong>in</strong> front <strong>of</strong><br />
a virtual stranger <strong>and</strong> expos<strong>in</strong>g myself... is the pa<strong>in</strong>.<br />
VB: Oh, how it hurts. It’s gendered labour <strong>and</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>. Worst <strong>of</strong> all, I don’t know<br />
how to reconcile it with my <strong>politics</strong>, as if there’s a loop <strong>in</strong> my head say<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
‘you’re not worthy unless you do this.’ Occasionally, I consider the scenario<br />
where<strong>in</strong> I am called on some adventure or mission to a remote, fantastical<br />
location. I would probably turn it down because, sorry friends, I need to live<br />
with<strong>in</strong> a certa<strong>in</strong> radius <strong>of</strong> a trustworthy salon. What I’m say<strong>in</strong>g is that this<br />
<strong>beauty</strong> ritual th<strong>in</strong>g will probably keep me from transcend<strong>in</strong>g, or whatever.
