Rajshahi bring
Dhaka back
down to earth
• Tribune Report
Rajshahi Kings registered their
maiden win in the fourth edition
of the Bangladesh Premier League
Twenty20 beating the star-studded
Dhaka Dynamites comfortably
by six wickets at Sher-e-Bangla
National Stadium in Mirpur
yesterday.
England’s Samit Patel topscored
with an unbeaten 25-ball
44, featuring half a dozen fours and
a six while Sabbir Rahman added a
39-ball 31 as Rajshahi reached their
target with 11 balls to spare.
Earlier, Dhaka posted 138/5
in 20 overs after being asked to bat
first by Rajshahi skipper Darren
Sammy.
Dhaka were in a spot of bother
after youngster Mehedi Hasan
Miraz clean bowled Sri Lankan
great Kumar Sangakkara (two) in
the second over.
English left-arm spinner Patel
then initiated a double blow by removing
Mahela Jayawardene (11)
and Mehedi Maruf (25) in quick
succession.
However, Mosaddek Hossain (59
not out) and English all-rounder
Ravi Bopara (20) added 54 runs for
the fifth wicket to take their side to
a fighting total. •
Barisal Bulls v Comilla
Victorians
Comilla’s comedy of
errors
Comilla lost their opening
game of the Bangladesh
Premier League
Twenty20 2016-17 season
against Chittagong Vikings
so they were looking
to make a return to
winning ways against Barisal.
But Comilla hardly
helped their cause with
two run outs, eventually
ending their innings on
a moderate 129/8. First,
it was youngster Nazmul
Hossain Shanto who was
caught short of the crease
for 16 after fine work by
Shamsur Rahman. Then,
Imad Wasim followed
suit, and this time too it
was Shamsur who did all
the good work. Barisal
went on to win the game
by six wickets, consigning
defending champions
Comilla to the bottom
half of the table following
their second loss in a row.
PLAYS OF THE DAY
Mushfiq connects
sweetly with slog-sweep
Barisal skipper Mushfiqur
Rahim played a brilliant
innings of 33 from
23 balls. Barisal were under
a little bit of pressure
when Mushfiq came to
the crease. Their asking
rate was mounting but
the right-hander played
some aggressive shots,
thus ensuring Barisal’s
first win in the fourth
edition. Mushfiq formed
a 49-run partnership
with Thisara Perera for
the fourth wicket. Mushfiq
surprisingly wore
wicket-keeping pads
while batting and probably
that’s one of the reasons
why he was able to
take cheeky singles and
twos. But perhaps the
highlight of Mushfiq’s
innings was the trademark
slog-sweep. Mushfiq
struck two huge sixes
with his favourite shot
over cow corner. Nahidul
Islam and Imad were on
the receiving end.
Dhaka Dynamites v
Rajshahi Kings
43/1 to 41/4, Dhaka’s
mini-collapse
Batting first, Dhaka were
cruising against Rajshahi,
scoring 43 for 1 in six
overs. Then, Dhaka suddenly
suffered a mini-collapse.
From a handsome
position of 43 for 1, they
were struggling on 43 for
4. Three quick wickets
in four balls duly rocked
Dhaka’s top-order.
First, Mahela Jayawardene
got out trying
to clear the fence against
Samit Patel only to be
caught at long on by Farhad
Reza. In the very
next ball, opening batsman
Mehedi Maruf was
trapped in front by Patel.
Maruf made 25 from 22
ballls.
In the next over, Dhaka
skipper Shakib al
Hasan was stumped for
a golden duck. Shakib
charged down the wicket
to Mehedi Hasan Miraz
but missed as Nurul
Hasan Sohan did the rest.
But Dhaka eventually recovered,
thanks to a 54-
run partnership for the
fifth wicket between Ravi
Bopara and Mosaddek
Hossain.
Ctg Abahani, Sk
Russel fire blank
• Tribune Report
Rising powerhouse Chittagong
Abahani slipped up again in the
title race as they played out a goalless
draw against Sheikh Russel
Krira Chakra in the Bangladesh
Premier League at Rafiq Uddin
Bhuiyan Stadium yesterday.
The port city outfit, who will
return home for the upcoming fixtures,
remained second despite the
stalemate with 28 points from 14
matches. They are only a point behind
leaders Abahani Limited, who
have played a game less. Abahani
will play their 14th round game
against Team BJMC tomorrow and
a win will enable them to open up a
four-point lead.
Sheikh Russel, on the other
hand, had their worst first phase
in the league but are seemingly on
their way back to form after beating
Rahmatganj in their last match.
They are now 10th with 12 points.
Chittagong Abahani dominated the
opening half where Haitian striker
Leonel Saint Preux saw his effort
cleared off the line by Ahmed
Saeed Hasan. Sheikh Russel had a
better half after resumption but a
lack of finishing touch upfront left
the scoresheet goalless. •
