Prez Says<br />

Well, it is about time for me to move back<br />

to the Maverick Region. For the past few<br />

months I have been working Monday through<br />

Thursday in Washington, DC. I have finally<br />

landed a contract a bit closer to home. I am not<br />

sure who is the most excited about me being<br />

back in town, but hopefully my whole family<br />

will benefit. I should be able to start attending<br />

the Happy Hours again, too! I have missed a few since I have been<br />

out of town.<br />

At the post-Parade recap dinner meeting, we had a<br />

special guest visiting with us – Dennis Frick, the Parade<br />

Competition Rules Chairman. I got a chance to talk to him for a<br />

while before dinner, and we discussed how to start a Concours<br />

d’Elegance program in a region that is not very active in that<br />

respect. He gave me a few good ideas on where to get started so<br />

look for some events coming up soon. If YOU have any suggestions<br />

or think this is a good or a bad idea, let me know! Send me email<br />

The next BIG event coming up will be Roundup<br />

<strong>September</strong> 7th through 9th (See ad at right). This is a multievent<br />

weekend that will encompass a fun, low-stress Concours;<br />

a fun, low-stress Rally; a fun, low-stress Driving contest<br />

(a Gymkhana, not an Autocross), and fun, low-stress Tech Quiz.<br />

(Is a pattern forming?) Roundup will be at Fossil Rim Wildlife<br />

Park again this year, which was an absolute blast last year. And<br />

this is one of the best events for bringing your kids along. There<br />

are a million things for them to do and see, and they will remember<br />

it for a lifetime. This will probably be the last year Roundup will<br />

be at this location (for a while) so hurry and sign up!<br />

We are also having another autocross at Standridge on<br />

<strong>September</strong> 16th. Let’s see how many people we can get out there<br />

now that it SHOULD be cooling off some. Ah, the joys of<br />

autocrosses with running water and real bathrooms! This will be<br />

our last autocross of the season (there is still one more Time Trial<br />

at Mineral Wells on October 6). The following weekend of<br />

<strong>September</strong> 22nd and 23rd will be the Drivers Education event out<br />

at MotorSport Ranch. Feel free to join us and watch, even if you<br />

aren’t going to be driving in it.<br />

The biggest event (financially for sure) of the year is the<br />

annual Club Race. This year it will be at Texas Motor Speedway<br />

and will be an event you don’t want to miss. We have been planning<br />

it for several years now and are getting very excited as the date<br />

approaches. Circle the weekend of October 12th through 14th,<br />

and contact Wendy at wendy@shoffit.com if you would be<br />

interested in helping out (please!). There will also be a Drivers Ed<br />

event which will give Blue thru Red solo participants a chance to<br />

drive the big track that the American Le Mans drivers have broken<br />

in for us. See Keith Olcha (olcha@aol.com) for more details on<br />

that.<br />

There’s still plenty to do this year, so come on out and join<br />

It’s been awhile since I’ve written about<br />

Mikayla. She’s 15 months old now and becoming<br />

extremely independent. Except, of course, when<br />

she’s hungry or tired, then she clings to me like a<br />

baby orangutan. It’s funny how her demeanor<br />

changes depending on her surroundings or the<br />

time of day. She certainly shows her personality<br />

during the late afternoon hours, especially when<br />

daddy comes home. That is the time of day when<br />

I become invisible and her only focus is on him.<br />

Yes, I can spend all day tirelessly playing toddler games, reading<br />

stories, feeding her, giving her baths, and soothing her bumps and<br />

bruises, but as soon as daddy walks in the door, I am about as<br />

popular as the nurse who gives her shots at the doctor’s office. Oh<br />

well. Now I know where my mom was coming from when she<br />

said, “You kids never appreciate all I do for you!” I can hear me<br />

now, when Mika is a teenager and telling me how unfair and<br />

uncool I am being. You know, all those classic teenager phrases<br />

we all used once and I will say to her, “You don’t appreciate all<br />

I’ve done for you!” And of course, I will freak out because I’ll<br />

realize then that I sound, yikes, just like my mother. Mika will<br />

then storm out of the room and run right up to her dad and ask<br />

him for the same favor she just asked me. He will, of course, give<br />

in because she will still have him wrapped around her finger.<br />

This will also undoubtedly be the reason she will drive a Porsche<br />

instead of something, say, more practical for a teenager. Ahh, the<br />

joys of motherhood. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.<br />

Maverick Minutes<br />

by Andy Mears, Maverick Region Secretary<br />

The first item on the agenda for the August<br />

Board Meeting was an explanation by Maverick<br />

Region president, James Shoffit, on how the board<br />

meeting minutes will be reported in the future.<br />

We have always recorded minutes at each meeting<br />

and usually only published a “summary” version<br />

of the minutes in <strong>Slipstream</strong>. We will continue to<br />

publish the summary minutes as always and<br />

produce a detailed minutes report that will be<br />

distributed to board and committee members as well as general<br />

members that request a copy. The primary reason for this duplication<br />

of minutes is due to the many and often overlapping events and<br />

activities within Maverick Region (MR). It is vital that the complete<br />

record of minutes be distributed or made available to all board,<br />

committee and regular members that may not have been able to<br />

attend the board meeting.<br />

The scheduling committee will be working to build a tentative<br />

schedule for next year, this includes autocross (AX), time trials<br />

(TT), driver education (DE) and club racing events as well as the<br />

social events throughout the year. The process needs to start soon so<br />

that we can coordinate our events with other regions as well as with<br />

PCA national. If you have any suggestions or comments on how<br />

events were scheduled this year please contact Wendy Shoffit. All<br />

suggestions are welcome and encouraged.<br />

Acting Equipment Coordinator, Charlie Davis, gave his report<br />

on what equipment he will be coordinating. It turns out that the<br />

club has lots of stuff, which is in the process of being tagged and<br />

counted so as to provide the club with a detailed record of what we<br />

own. If you happen to have anything that is the property of<br />

Maverick Region, such as a pylon that got wedged in your front<br />

spoiler at the last driving event, let Charlie know.<br />

Wendy reported on the great success of the last AX and TT<br />

events. She also brought up the issue of giving refunds to people<br />

that prepaid for events but did not participate. After a lengthy<br />

discussion on the topic, a motion was passed that the club would<br />

not provide refunds to people who prepaid for AX and TT events<br />

and did not show-up for the event.<br />

Round-up chair, Teri Davis, reported that there is room available<br />

for more participants and to contact her if you want to participate.<br />

This round-up will have plenty of activities for everyone, especially<br />

children. Contact Teri for more details or to get signed up.<br />

Mimi Spreen reported on the plans for Maverick Region<br />

Founders’ Day, which is scheduled for November 10 at the Orndorf<br />

House in Highland Village. Watch for more details in upcoming<br />

issues of <strong>Slipstream</strong>.<br />

The nominating committee is looking for anyone interested in<br />

getting involved in management at board level. Please contact any of<br />

the current or past board members if you’d like to be considered for<br />

nomination, or to find out more information about the positions.<br />

Brian Scudder gave an update on the MR Club Race, scheduled<br />

for October 12-14, and was already getting applications for the<br />

event. Workers and volunteers are still needed to help this important<br />

club-sponsored event run smoothly. If you would like to learn more<br />

about club racing then contact Wendy Shoffit.<br />

After a few more minor topics of discussion the board meeting<br />

was brought to a close at 8:40 p.m.<br />

Maverick Region PCA board meetings are held once a month.<br />

Help Me Get Better...So I can Beat You! AX #4<br />

Imagine the coach of the Dallas Cowboys asking the coach of<br />

Washington for a few pointers on how to beat the Redskins, or<br />

Mike Modano, of the Stars asking the opposing teams goalie for<br />

tips on how to score on him. Fat chance! However, in the wonderful<br />

world of Maverick PCA, that sort of thing happens on a<br />

regular basis -- it's called the Developing Driver Class.<br />

The idea is simple...in A/X schools, DE's, and at actual<br />

events, experienced drivers help the novices improve so that<br />

someday they might (I emphasize might) have a shot at beating<br />

their instructor in an actual A/X, time trial, etc. Although the<br />

concept is simple, the execution is complex, fun, sometimes confusing,<br />

and always helpful. As you might imagine, some instructors<br />

are more effective teaching behind the wheel, some in the<br />

passenger seat, and others simply explaining the theory of how to<br />

go faster. At times, the input even appears contradictory.<br />

However, every time you come away with something that helps<br />

you be a better driver.<br />

Since I personally started at ground zero, any pointers I could<br />

pick up were a definite plus. From my first A/X school with Mike<br />

Lockas, to the recent A/X and time trials with Graham Lane, it's<br />

been a constant learning experience. In between, I've had great<br />

help from Chris Amond, Charlie Davis, Bob Glowacki, Keith<br />

Olcha, and Brian Scudder. I'm sure there are others I've neglected<br />

to mention, but thanks to all of you! The results have been<br />

gratifying. Of the timed events I've entered this year, I've been<br />

fortunate enough to have the lowest Developing Driver time in<br />

three of the four events, and I would have at least have been competitive<br />

in my class(S7).<br />

If anyone out there has been holding back entering these<br />

events because they are inexperienced, worried about looking<br />

foolish, or asking "dumb" questions, let me encourage you to wait<br />

no longer. You could not possibly be any more of a beginner that<br />

I was. Everyone who has helped me has shown great patience,<br />

knowledge, and courage (after all, they can't push the brake<br />

pedal). With luck, someday I hope to be as much help to others<br />

as they have been to me.<br />

Now, let me now tell you a little about my adventure at the<br />

Autocross #4 at Mineral Ring. The course was designed by Shawn<br />

Collenburg and to say it was a challenge is a significant understatement!<br />

I have no idea what the record is for DNF's on a<br />

course, but my guess is this one has to be near the top. Speaking<br />

from personal experience (two DNF's), corner #2 seemed to be<br />

especially mystifying. My only consolation is that several of the<br />

old pros (you know who you are) seemed to be having just as<br />

much trouble as I was. I guess this falls into the "misery loves<br />

company" category.<br />

If the weather was blistering, and it surely was, the competition<br />

was just as heated. Cody Sears set the pace, followed closely<br />

by Keith Olcha. As expected, Shawn Collenburg did well on his<br />

own course, with the third best time. Kevin Hardison kept the<br />

contest for top time of the day in doubt right up until his last run.<br />

In spite of the hot competition, there was the usual spirit of<br />

cooperation that you expect at any Maverick event. Everyone was<br />

reminding everyone else to use lots of sunscreen and to stay<br />

"hydrated". (For the old-timers, that means drinking lots of<br />

water). A special thank you goes out to the Dugans for the wonderful,<br />

ice cold watermelon they provided at the end of the event!<br />

“Oh my gosh we don’t have a seat for Peter Porsche”, “No<br />

don’t give away the Pirelli tires, this is the Yokohama banquet!”,<br />

“What, we have no T-shirts for the Walk/Run?” “When did you<br />

send the napkins for the hospitality room?” “No more rooms for<br />

sleeping? But we thought you were handling that”.<br />

I now have joined the national ranks and serve on the Public<br />

Relations Committee along with Carter Dunkin of the St. Louis<br />

Region. He and I were basically overwhelmed with our new jobs,<br />

but we came through with just a few bruises, seats for everyone,<br />

meals for everyone, and rooms for everyone (of course, thanks to<br />

Connie Waltrip). It is certainly an eye opener to be on the other<br />

side, working diligently to make this Parade the best.<br />

My heartfelt thanks to the national staff, local staff, and all<br />

the others that work (and I mean WORK) to give the Porsche customer<br />

the best in entertainment, goodie store, food, rooms, etc.<br />

so they can have something wonderful to keep as a memory. It is<br />

the result of many hours of tireless effort from a group of individuals<br />

who work 2 to 3 years to give you the best Parade possible.<br />

I felt privileged to to be part of this great event, and even<br />

though no “trophy” came home with me, my trophies were in the<br />

wonderful friends both new and old, and the memories that will<br />

not tarnish. As for next year, I hope to see you all in Boise!<br />

Concours on Lake Michigan<br />

So, what are the two most likely situations that could occur<br />

at a Parade Concours? How about rain and a busy protest<br />

committee? Well we had both! Luckily, the rain only fell during<br />

the early pre-dawn hours, but for a while it looked like the<br />

protests might go until the next day’s pre-dawn hours.<br />

The protests came from the 356 classes largely because<br />

they’re so perfect that the only trivia left to worry about is<br />

whether Hans (when the car was first built) put the screw slots<br />

vertical or horizontal.<br />

The concours site was a beautiful city park built on landfill<br />

jutting out into Lake Michigan. All the cars (race cars included)<br />

had to drive the two miles from the concours prep lot through<br />

downtown Milwaukee to the site. Since the concours was on<br />

Sunday, the streets were virtually deserted. I should have entered<br />

the Cockroach just for the opportunity to rip through downtown<br />

Milwaukee in a race car unmolested!<br />

Ah yes, the weather. To the Yankees, it was what they call<br />

summer. However, as I kept telling the locals while shivering in<br />

my windbreaker, “We call this winter!” Fortunately, it was very<br />

sunny – sunny enough to sunburn the top of my bald head. (I<br />

keep forgetting I have to wear hats now!)<br />

The turnout was very good; I believe about 150 cars were on<br />

the grass for judging. Participation has improved since the<br />

creation by the PCR (Parade Competition Rules) committee of<br />

Lake Michigan makes quite a backdrop for this Boxster.<br />

categories. (In Touring, the underside of the car isn’t judged.) The<br />

intention was to bring more real cars out to be displayed; cars that<br />

are actually driven and used. Our own John Halla drove his 944<br />

Turbo to Milwaukee, cleaned it, and entered the concours. I<br />

believe he took first place in his class. A lesser-seen Maverick<br />

member from Longview, Jim Valenti, also brought his car out and<br />

took first in his class. Placing in class aside, the important point<br />

here is that they both participated. That is the best way to enjoy<br />

Parades.<br />

I judged again this year in the early 911 Preservation Class.<br />

I’m enjoying this quite a bit, as it is not a dirt hunt. Presentation<br />

is still important, of course, but the cleanest car doesn’t<br />

necessarily win. Originality, mileage (higher is better), length of<br />

ownership, and whether you drove or trailered to Parade are all<br />

important criteria. This year’s winner was a 1967 911 with over<br />

90,000 miles, original paint, driven to Milwaukee from Vermont,<br />

and owned by the entrant for 27 years.<br />

The more of this I do, the more I want to learn even more<br />

detail about how our favorite cars are built. I’m convinced<br />

factory workers spend lunch hours trying to figure different ways<br />

of assembling our cars because they know 30 years later we’ll be<br />

going crazy trying to understand and document what they did!<br />

Future Porsche Owners<br />

When asked to chair the kid activities at Milwaukee Parade,<br />

I was so excited to have the challenge and thought, “Let’s make<br />

this a real kid-friendly Parade.” We did just that! The wonderful<br />

volunteers from all over the country, especially the great Zone 5<br />

folks, were there to help orchestrate a “Run What You Brung” Kid<br />

autocross. Michelin Tire was our sponsor and provided the<br />

Michelin Man to start the race. Other members of the Michelin<br />

Team were there to support our Tech-Meister, Eric Erz. Wendy<br />

Shoffit and Karen Erz were in charge of registration. Jan Mayo<br />

and Peter Kendig (Coastal Bend) designed a fun, yet a little bit<br />

challenging, course. Cindy Kendig (Coastal Bend) and Susan<br />

Fleming (Sacramento Region) assisted with start/finish.<br />

Approximately 100 people, which included very excited parents,<br />

watched the 39 Future Porsche Owners take their open<br />

wheel race cars, bikes, trikes, roller blades, feet and strollers to the<br />

limit and vie for “Top Time Of Day.” Everyone was a winner,<br />

however, and awards were presented at the Autocross Banquet<br />

held at the Milwaukee Zoo (so fitting)!<br />

The Pig Returns!<br />

I joined the Maverick<br />

Region in 1987. We attended<br />

many events and always<br />

enjoyed the Founder's Day<br />

Awards Banquet even<br />

though we never won a driving<br />

award. During Bob<br />

Knight's reign as Prez, he<br />

took pity on us and presented<br />

us with the Piggy Award.<br />

Piggy Award? Well, we didn't<br />

autocross or race and<br />

quite often were "dead last,<br />

but finished" in the rallies,<br />

but by golly, we attended<br />

every dinner meeting. Then<br />

came my term as vice-president<br />

and the Piggy Award<br />

competition was established.<br />

Cards were handed out<br />

and credit given for each<br />

dinner meeting attended,<br />

cocktail hour optional. Once<br />

Miss Piggy (aka Linda<br />

Bambina) heard about this,<br />

she rearranged her busy<br />

schedule in order to fly in<br />

from Hollywood and be the<br />

presenter for this prestigious<br />

porky award. This continued<br />

for several years then -<br />

gasp - Piggy disappeared.<br />

to report all is well, he looks<br />

great and is ready to join in<br />

the Maverick festivities once<br />

Heard The West Calling Gimmick Rally<br />

They heard the call of the rally and they answered. Eighteen<br />

teams arrived at the Heard Museum in McKinney to take part in<br />

the Heard the West Calling rally. Seventeen teams made it to the<br />

barbecue and beer at the finish. The team of Ken and Blake Perry<br />

had to call it a day early due to co-driver illness.<br />

Entrants were equally split between the Maverick Region of the<br />

PCA and Texas region of the SCCA. Several teams actually belong<br />

to both clubs but there was even one team that did not belong to any<br />

organized club. I think they were Democrats. (For those of you who<br />

may take offense at this, this joke was stolen from Will Rogers.)<br />

The course wound through Collin County over to the shores<br />

of Lake Lavon and then back inland to Garland. Scoring opportunities<br />

were from street signs along the route. As the radio show<br />

"What Do You Know" says, all questions were extensively<br />

researched. The answers however, were not. Special thanks to Eric<br />

Erz of the Porsche Club for putting his car out to serve as one<br />

answer, while the Miller's also put their rally car out as another<br />

answer. Juanita will take credit for the beautiful course, but<br />

Richard gets the blame for the puns in the answers.<br />

The winning team of Rocky Johnson and Ed Clifford scored<br />

109 points out of a possible 112. Second, third and fourth places<br />

were all tied at 107 points each. Terri Cummings and Andy<br />

Anderson took the second place trophy home on the basis of the<br />

first tie breaker in that they remembered that Bessie Heard lived<br />

to the ripe old age of 101. Charlie and Teri Davis got the third<br />

place trophy by running clean (without error) longer than<br />

Shannon and Marsha DeWolfe who ended up in fourth.<br />

Teams entered from Fort Worth and Weatherford to the west<br />

and from Jacksonville in east Texas. There were entrants from<br />

McKinney where the rally started and from Garland where the<br />

rally ended. But the long distance award has to go to Kevin<br />

McNamara who lists his address as Boston, Massachusetts.<br />

Special thanks to the staff of the Heard Museum who put up<br />

with us and provided the questionnaire that counted for 19 possible<br />

points. Of course, the questionnaire was aimed at 4th grade<br />

and up which did put it slightly beyond the intellectual level of<br />

most of us sports car nuts.<br />

Happy Hour at Stone Trail<br />

July found the Maverick Region Happy Hour Tour stopping at Stone Trail<br />

restaurant in North Dallas. Stone Trail has an impressive word-of-mouth<br />

reputation in Dallas as a fine steakhouse and I was looking forward to sampling<br />

their menu with my fellow region members. In keeping with the new tradition<br />

started by Dennis and Tinker the previous month, I attempted to “acquire” a<br />

celebrity guest for the evening but alas, both William Shatner and David Hasselhoff<br />

had scheduling conflicts that prevented them from coming. They send their regrets<br />

to the Region. I’ve attended almost all the Region’s happy hours and one of the great<br />

things about them is the number of new faces every month. Sure, there’s a core<br />

group of 5-10 people who are always there, but the other 10-20 attendees are almost<br />

always new. And this is a good thing. It’s always great to see new members, or old<br />

members who haven’t been by in awhile. Happy hours are a great way to introduce<br />

people to the Club in a relaxed, comfortable setting.<br />

Stone Trail is in a large strip shopping center with plenty of parking (a must for a car club meeting) and has the usual Valet parking for<br />

those of you who like to pay someone else to drive your expensive German sports car. Inside, it is dark with faux wood paneling adorning<br />

the walls. The bar area was spacious and decently stocked. The Stone Trail staff was kind enough to provide the happy hour crowd with<br />

complimentary fruit and roasted chicken trays that I thought were a nice touch. These were devoured quickly by the Region’s starving<br />

members after a hard day’s work. After much chatting and visiting, it was time for steak, which was great. I had the Bone-in Ribeye with<br />

Bourbon Peppercorn Sauce and it was truly outstanding. It was very flavorful and on par with the steaks at a previous happy hour stop,<br />

Trulucks. I’m afraid I deeply offended the wait staff by ordering Coke with my steak, however, and I have probably been banned from Stone<br />

Trail forever. All in all, it was a nice evening experience with fellow Region members and Porsche fans! Come out and enjoy the next one!<br />

The July Porsche Driving Experience at TMS<br />

The Porsche Driving Experience, in conjunction with Park Place<br />

Porsche, held a two-day driving school at Texas Motor Speedway on<br />

the weekend of July 28 and 29. Instructors included such notables as<br />

“Doc” Bundy of SpeedVision fame, Jeff Purner, and John Paul, Jr. The<br />

school did not bring their 996s along for students to drive; instead<br />

everyone used their own cars, but then the cost was a good bit less<br />

than it is normally when 996s are provided. Park Place was gracious<br />

enough to provide Boxsters for the instructors to use, as well as for a<br />

few prospective clients. Using our own cars worked out quite well<br />

actually, as it allowed students to explore the limits of their cars, and<br />

to “bum” rides from others in order to get a little variety. I managed<br />

to convince a very nice lady to let me ride in her 996 TT a few times.<br />

Wow, does that car scoot! In my own case, I had just purchased a set<br />

of Yokohama DOT R-compound tires and was anxious to try them.<br />

The Saturday session began with some classroom instruction,<br />

which was followed by instructor-led track time on the TMS infield<br />

and various driving exercises (auto-cross, slalom, thresh-hold braking,<br />

heel-n-toe practice) in the large TMS parking area. We enjoyed<br />

a delicious lunch in the Speedway Club while enjoying a fantastic<br />

view of the entire stadium. The Saturday infield sessions were kept to<br />

moderate driving, with instructors frequently hopping between cars<br />

and leading the pack around multiple times to help people find the<br />

line. The parking lot exercises were a bit more exciting, as it involved<br />

lots of tires squealing and loss of control. Of course, that was exactly<br />

the intention, as the instructors encouraged everyone to find, exceed,<br />

and remember the limits of their cars in this very controlled environment.<br />

The Sunday session was primarily oriented towards TMS infield<br />

track time. As most folks are aware, Park Place Porsche generously<br />

donated a number of tickets to the Sunday session, which Maverick<br />

Region proceeded to raffle off for charity. As a result, the number of<br />

familiar faces increased on Sunday, with ticket raffle ‘winners’ Wendy<br />

Shoffit, Kay Leibel, John Hrad, Bill Kasdorf and Doug Molny all in<br />

attendance. John Hrad took the opportunity to debut his new Guards<br />

Red 996, which he had spent the past week furiously preparing. Also<br />

in attendance were Lanean Hughes, George Abdalla, Bob Everson,<br />

and James Shoffit, who came just to watch the fun. Sunday’s activities<br />

included a short classroom session for folks who hadn’t been in<br />

Saturday’s session, followed by plenty of opportunity to get on the<br />

track and run it hard.<br />

The instructors were great, the lessons very informative, and the<br />

smile-factor was sky high. I had my first real experience with heel-ntoe,<br />

a skill I have been trying to get started on for some time. I was<br />

pleased with the progress I made, managing quite a few reasonably<br />

smooth transitions; intermixed, of course, with plenty of mistakes.<br />

If you have the time and the inclination, the PDE schools provide<br />

a great forum for improving your driving skills and having a<br />

wonderful time discovering why people love to drive Porsches, and<br />

love to drive them fast. The best part was I managed to end my day<br />

Sunday with just enough gas to make it to the gas station a block away.<br />

That is what I call running for all it is worth!<br />

Thank you to Park Place Porsche and Tracy Moore for the<br />

generous donation of 5 ‘slots’ to this event. Maverick Region’s<br />

charity, Hope Shelter, received $750 from the raffle proceeds!<br />

Hope Happenings<br />

The Hope shelter has hired a new director, Ed White. Ed is<br />

from the Mineral Wells area and comes highly recommended.<br />

On the donation front, we are pleased to send the shelter<br />

$750, which was raised during the Porsche Driving Experience<br />

raffle. Due to our work with the shelter, Maverick Region won<br />

third place in the Public Service competition. A $500 check will<br />

be presented to folks at the shelter during the dinner we are<br />

hosting on August 25th at the MineralRing. Your donations are<br />

appreciated, and your trips to the shelter mean so much to the<br />

staff and clients.<br />

THINKING OF CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST!<br />

It is only 3 months til Christmas and soon we will be stuffing<br />

those stockings and preparing the holiday cheer for our charities.<br />

Please continue donating your soaps, shampoos, and other items<br />

that could be used at our “Stocking Stuffer” party in December.<br />

Sensing<br />

A little voice inside mentioned something about the hour as<br />

I left home, headed for the MineralRing and the 4th Time Trial.<br />

It was before 6:30 AM on a cool, clear Saturday morning...at least<br />

it was cool then...it would be HOT later in the day. I needed an<br />

answer for the voice. In less than a 1/4 mile I drove around a<br />

switch-back in the road, dropped down to cross a small creek,<br />

and drove through a canopy of trees that overhung the road.<br />

There were nice country fragrances everywhere. I had it: "It's nice<br />

early in the morning, with the top off and the windows down!"<br />

As I drove to the track, I went through several more creek<br />

beds and each time, the air temperature dropped several degrees.<br />

Even in the hot summer, it was almost cold. Coupled with that,<br />

was an indescribable aroma...green, wet, and mysterious...almost<br />

primal. This is why I like an open Porsche...one without an air<br />

conditioner! I wonder if others are experiencing this sensual<br />

bonanza in their cars this morning? Certainly there must be<br />

quite a few Porsches on the road, going the same way.<br />

When I got to the Ring, I rode with Rocky Johnson in his<br />

Boxster. Although I was supposed to be showing him where<br />

Course #3 went, we instead talked about how beautiful the early<br />

morning summer weather was and I described my sensory experiences<br />

as I drove out that morning. He said he had also experienced<br />

the same thing as he drove out top down. Besides, Rocky<br />

was not having problems finding the course.<br />

Somehow, you miss a lot when you drive in isolation. Most<br />

of my other cars are ones that we just get in, leave the A/C on, and<br />

drive to town. In the summer, it's hard to choose to pass up modern<br />

comforts, like A/C. But it's often worth it!<br />

For the last 3 years, Teri and I have driven to the Parade in the<br />

914...in the summer...without A/C. It IS hot, but we compensated<br />

by starting early and not driving in the really hot part of the<br />

afternoon...when it gets hot, we find a motel with a pool! But<br />

there are some positive things about this approach. This year, on<br />

the way to Milwaukee, it was some flowers along the roads in<br />

Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. We first really noticed them<br />

in Iowa, because we noticed (and loved) the sweet smell as we<br />

passed a big patch of these flowers on a slope adjacent to the<br />

highway. The aroma was hard to describe. My best description<br />

(one which doesn't do the smell justice) was that it was similar to<br />

some fabric softener sheets? These banks are too steep to mow, so<br />

the states tend to leave them as un-mowed areas and several<br />

varieties of wild flowers seem to thrive there. Heck, the highway<br />

departments may plant them there? They do in Texas. If we had<br />

been in an air conditioned car, we would never have noticed<br />

the aroma of the flowers. They were not that physically beautiful...sort<br />

of a white/pink/purple little wild flower. Never did find<br />

out what the flower was...but we are still researching it with a<br />

friend who lives in Des Moines.<br />

Remember the movie, "The Bridges of Madison County"?<br />

We got hungry in Madison County, Iowa. We left the main<br />

highway and drove a few miles off it into St. Charles, Iowa, which<br />

is the self-proclaimed gateway to these "bridges". There was one<br />

right there in town. We didn't stop to investigate the bridge<br />

because it was lunch time and we were really hungry. Driving<br />

through beautiful, downtown St. Charles, we didn't notice any<br />

restaurants. But we smelled one! We drove around for a while,<br />

taking into account the wind direction, looking for that restaurant.<br />

The whole downtown section of St. Charles wasn't that<br />

big...maybe 10 blocks long and 2-3 blocks the other way. We<br />

drove the entire thing several times. Never did see a "Restaurant",<br />

"Cafe", or similar sign. Still, we could smell FOOD! Finally, Teri<br />

noticed some local people leaving a building with a satisfied look<br />

on their faces and suspected that it was a place to get food. We<br />

parked in front and looked inside. Yep, it was that restaurant we<br />

had been smelling. Seems that they were only 2 days old and their<br />

sign hadn't gotten there yet. The food was good and they asked us<br />

how we liked it. We love small town America! We never would<br />

have found them in our other cars, because we would have had<br />

the A/C on. That little restaurant (it had only ONE table<br />

inside...their patio hadn't been built yet either) wasn't air conditioned<br />

either...but there was a fan and real people inside.<br />

ALMS At The Point<br />

Well, if you’ve been paying attention to the ALMS this year, then<br />

you know that the works Audi R8 team in the Le Mans Prototype<br />

(LMP) class has been kicking booty pretty regularly. No different at<br />

Sears Point July 20th and 21st. The Audi team showed up with their<br />

NEW fuel injection (read fuel efficient here) for their twin turbo 3.6<br />

liter V-8’s that they used to win with at the Le Mans 24. In a bit of a<br />

head game, they also ran with the SAME engines they ran at Le Mans.<br />

According to the PR, because the race in France was in the rain, they<br />

didn’t go as far mileage wise and the engines were still good to go! I<br />

love these guys’s!! The only serious competition for the Audi’s came<br />

from the Panoz LMP 01’s. After Le Mans, Panoz sent their new car, the<br />

LMP 07’s, back for further development (read Turkey here). So last<br />

year’s earth shaking 6 liter V-8’s made by the good ole boys at Robert<br />

Yates NASCAR shop went thundering around, pleasing the crowd,<br />

scaring small children and basically polluting the planet. Lest I forget,<br />

there was also a Lola Judd V-10, which sounded really sweet and was<br />

piloted by ex Women’s Global GT driver Milka Duno, and TWO<br />

Cadillac/Cadillac’s in the class.<br />

The race was an Audi blowout for the 11th time in a row, but I<br />

really think that if the Panoz’ had vented their exhaust to the rear, they<br />

could have gained 10 miles per hour. Cadillac managed to maintain<br />

their strangle hold in the rolling roadblock category to finish 12th<br />

overall (12 laps down for the 2 1/2 hour race) but the cars had really<br />

nice paint and the Crews’ costumes were really clean. The Lola-Judd<br />

finished in13th. Although there is a class in the ALMS series for LMP’s<br />

with smaller engines, there were only two entries and nobody cares.<br />

The GTS category only had 5 entries with two C5R Corvettes, two<br />

Vipers and a Saleen S7R. The Corvettes came in 1st and 2nd with the<br />

Saleen in 3rd. The Saleen looked liked it had a shot at winning, but<br />

the crew anticipated a different track temperature and chose a tire<br />

compound that melted early.<br />

The only class that was congested was the GT class. There were 12<br />

entries of which 8 were Porsches’ and 4 were BMW’s. The Bimmers<br />

were the new M3 GTR with the 450 hp V8. The Porsches’ were the<br />

GT3R’s and the GT3RS’ now starting to get old. The new Bimmers are<br />

definitely fast. They can out drag the GT3’s and are really balanced in<br />

the turns. The four BMW’s finished ahead of Alex Job’s GT3RS which<br />

also finished ahead of the Cadillac LMP.<br />

The X Factor World Challenge Touring Car Race had so many<br />

entries that they ran it in 2 races. The first race for the Touring Class<br />

sedans ended with the closest finish ever, or so everyone thought. The<br />

runner up was disqualified the following day after it was discovered<br />

that his camshaft was “just a bit outside” the stock configuration for a<br />

BMW 328i. So the 0.059 sec margin of victory was thrown out and no<br />

one talked about it anymore. Another Bimmer bummer was a 328i<br />

disqualified for illegal fuel. Everyone else ran legal. Results were<br />

Bimmer 328i, Acura, Acura (the Acura’s have finally been “awarded”<br />

enough extra weight to reduce their dominance in the class). The second<br />

race was for the larger horsepower GT cars such as the Porsches’<br />

911GT3 Cup cars, BMW M3’s, Audi S4’s, Corvettes and the points<br />

leader Peter Cunningham’s Acura NSX. Johannes Van Overbeek in his<br />

Porsche Cup car captured his first World Challenge win in 4 years. This<br />

win moves Porsche ahead in the Manufacturers Championship points<br />

40-36 over Audi. A BMW M3 was second followed by a C5 Corvette.<br />

For the Trans-Am race where EVERYONE runs legal, the day<br />

started with a parade across the Golden Gate Bridge, probably really<br />

chapping the EPA. It has been 6 years since the Trans-Am has run at<br />

the Point and there are a lot of newcomers to the sport. There were<br />

several Qvale Mangustas, a couple of Jaguar XKR’s and Panoz<br />

Esperante’s all vying for the “win on Sunday, sell on Monday” honors.<br />

If you follow the series, you know that Paul Gentilozzi (Jag) and Brian<br />

Simo (Mangusta) usually duke it out. No difference here. Simo led<br />

most of the race and due to flawless pit work, managed to withstand a<br />

last lap charge from Gentilozzi.<br />

Between the big races, there was an IMSA GTP Historic race. It’s<br />

been a while since the track has seen the likes of the big thumpers.<br />

There was a Porsche 935K, Porsche 962, Porsche 934.5 (really, a<br />

934.5!), Chevron B19 and 36, Sauber C4, Osella PA6, Lola T160 and a<br />

really stunning Lola T600. Almost all of them were able to make 1 lap<br />

of the 1-hour race. Oh well, when you only run a race every 10 years<br />

or so and have to make your own parts.<br />

My Ninja Pit Rat was so busy talking trash to her Driver friends<br />

that she didn’t get any juicy news – at least that we can print. All in all<br />

the weekend was great. If you get a chance to get to the Point, do it.<br />
