Because I Said So by Wendy Shoffit, Editor There are some exciting things going on this month. James has already done a good job of reiterating them. If you have any questions, look at the calendar page and/or our webpage at www.pca.org/mav. The most interesting turn of events that has happened is that Maverick Region will be the host of the 2004 Porsche Parade. For those of you who might be new members or haven’t heard of it before, Parade is a week-long event for PCA members. It is held at a different location every year. Last year was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin this year is in Boise, Idaho, and next year will be in Tampa, Florida. Roughly 1000 PCA members from all over the country (and other areas of the world) get together during this week to participate in a plethora of events. These include: a concours d’elegance, a TSD rally, an autocross, tech quizzes, an art show, tech sessions, golf tournament, a 5K/3K Run/Walk, an RC autocross, a kids autocross (with bikes, scooters, rollerblades, etc.), and so on. For areas like ours with a road course nearby, Parade is starting to include a Drivers’ Education event as well. As if that weren’t enough, all but 2 evenings during the week have banquet dinners, some casual and some formal, but always delicious! Maverick Region has hosted Parade before, in 1987 and helped again in 1997 for the one in San Antonio. We thought we would wait another few years to do 2007 (to make it an even Maverick Minutes by Andy Mears, Secretary April’s meeting was called to order at 7 PM at the home of the Shoffits with a busy agenda and a full house of Maverick members for this meeting. Top of the agenda was the official announcement that Maverick Region has been asked to present a bid on hosting the 49th Annual Porsche Parade in 2004. More information will be forthcoming as the details get hammered out. On a topic related to Parade, Maverick Region is looking for national award nominations for the 2002 Parade in Boise, Idaho. A few of the nominations include Public Service Award, Family of the Year Award and Enthusiast Award. If you would like to find out more information on how to make a nomination please contact any of the Maverick Board members. A motion was presented and passed for the region to purchase a radar gun for use at region sponsored Club Races. The equipment is required for monitoring vehicle speeds in the pits. Also, the upcoming May Club Race and DE registration is starting to fill-up, if you want to participate or volunteer checkout the Maverick Region web site for all the details. An important change in the May schedule is that the annual 10 in between each time), but circumstances arose nationally that needed to be taken care of. So, we’ll be a couple of years “early” from what we originally expected. We don’t have a whole lot of details as of yet. A planning committee is surveying possible sites to serve as the host hotel. There is a huge list of criteria that needs to be met, including large enough banquet facilities, plenty of parking (including trailers) and hotel rooms, a large open outdoor area for the concours, and so on. There’s a lot to it. This is an incredible opportunity for our region to shine. We will be asking a lot of you Mavericks, including volunteers of all sorts. We will also be asking members of other regions to help out in their areas of expertise to put on the best show possible. This will be a lot of work, but there will be a lot of benefits. Besides, when else might you get to see Peter Porsche in his swim trunks? I look forward to this exciting event in 2004 and hope you will be, too! Oh, I almost forgot... who wants to be editor next year? I’m quite certain I will be heavily involved with Parade planning and implementing and honestly won’t have time to do Slipstream. So, I’m looking for a willing volunteer. I can offer on the job training and help next year. Contact me with any questions or to volunteer. I will be more than happy to talk to you about it! It’s a very rewarding job! May at Mayo’s has been moved to from May 11th to May 18th. Look for the ad in this months Slipstream. Tinker Edwards reported on the successful first Spring tour and reported that everyone had a good time. Also, there are several tours planned for 2002 so watch the Region calendar for upcoming events. Finally, the March AX school was a great success and everyone had a great time and the club made few dollars to help pay for future events. The next Maverick Region Board meeting will be on May 8 in Irving at the Shoffit’s. Maverick Region PCA Board Meetings are held once a month. The meetings are open to all PCA members and your suggestions and opinions are welcome. And there’s free food! 8
Boxstermania by Keith Olcha February 18 - We had, at one point- 9 Boxsters and 3 911s. It was fun. We did 5 brake flushes, 2 oil changes, and 1 trailer hitch install!! And lots of talking! We attracted the attention of two Tech-Art equipped 996s with wheels,full bodywork,etc.who followed some people over. We had Eric Beebe visit us to shoot the breeze. Dennis Chamberlain even threatened to come, but got up too late. The best surprise, and the winner of the "best-looking" Boxster from my daughter and her two teenage friends was the Yellow car of none-other-than Tom (I finally bought the damn car) Snodgrass! Darron is now Mr. Car Tools (hand me that spanner, will 'ya...). Rocky Johnson has the freshest brake fluid on the planet right now. We covered brake pad replacement procedure, Brey-Krause roll-bars, Valentine-1 mountings. It was a ball. Thanks, Porsche cars, and Dr. Wendelin Weideking for your Japanese consultants who told you how to make the new cars easy to service. Forget you, Dr. Weideking for your Forbe's Magazine comments about how racing is foolish and Ferrari is backed by Fiat- Ha-Hawe'll never race F1.
