Curves Ahead by Matt Platts, Editor Wow, what a turnout for Mavericks at the 2003 Parade! We were very well represented and cleaned up nicely in the awards department, too. I ended up getting 3rd place in my autocross group, I am quite happy with that. I would be even happier if my clutch hadn’t decided to throw in the towel at the end of the last lap. Good thing I trailered down instead of driving. Now I get to sell that trailer I bought so I can pay for a new clutch. Oh well, that’s just the way things go. I had a great time at Parade, as did everyone who I talked to. There were sooo many things going on every day, you really had to plan your activities carefully. I also was able to spend some time with my family while in Florida. My little brother, Billy, really enjoyed checking out all of the cool Porsches at Saddlebrook too. He fared well in at the kid’s activities by winning one of the electric radio-control cars that Yokohama provided as part of Maverick Minutes by Mimi Spreen The July Board meeting was held at the home of Lanean Hughes on Tuesday 7/8/03. The attendees were: Lanean Hughes, Noby Takahashi, Dennis Chamberlain, Teri and Charlie Davis, Wendy and James Shoffit, Keith Olcha, Lisa and Mark Steele, Mike Brodigan, Matt Platts, Cody Sears, Bob Knight, Michael Wingfield, Joel Nannis, Joe McGlohen, Jan Mayo and Mimi Spreen. Keith called the meeting to order at 7:05 and began with a 'Round the Room: Bob Knight - Financials are looking ok. Matt - July Slipstream will mail on 7/9. Matt also talked about Slipstream preparation and printing timetables. We will begin using new communication procedures with Ussery Printing in an effort to get Slipstream into member’s hands earlier each month. James - As discussed at previous meetings, we need a display for Parade autocross and also Maverick events. A sample board was shown with what will appear on the board including size of display numbers and brightness/ability to see numbers from cars. A motion was made for Charlie/James to buy this display subsequent to our demo if we like it and motion was approved. Mark - TT went well. The next one is Sept 6th at Mineral Wells. Joe - Safety issue - moving corner stations at MSR was discussed and Joe is working on with track owner and staff. This will be discussed at length at next DE meeting. Eric Erz is building a storage box for the radios which will cost about $100.00. Charlie - Truxter was checked out and found to be in need of some repairs. Brakes, shocks and tires have all been fixed or replaced. their sponsorship of the kids events. He already has big modification plans for his new car and expects to “run” it next year at our own Parade in Fort Worth. Now that we are in the heat of summer, it’s time to take a little break from our sometimes-busy driving schedule. But keep an eye on the calendar because we have a Time Trial and a Drivers Education coming up in September. I hope to have my car back in working order for those events. We’ll see how it goes. Maverick Region also has some great tours coming up, including a tour to Nacogdoches in late August, Palo Pinto in September, then Arkansas in October. If you have never been on one of Ted’s tours, now’s your chance. The one-day tours are great for getting out and giving your Porsche a good shake-down run, and the weekend tours give you plenty of seat time. My first tour was an Arkansas tour a few years back, the roads and scenery up there are just wonderful. I don’t think you could find a better place for a road trip within short day’s drive of the metroplex. Joel - First set of letters were sent out via email to those members who aren't renewing and some of the names came back as undeliverable. Next month, he will send out letters via snail mail. We have over 1300 Slipstreams being mailed out including members, sponsors and advertisers. Michael - DE registered people up to Saturday morning and still had openings. Many other activities were in conflict with this date, including Parade, which is why the numbers were low. Lanean - Bobby Rodriguez appreciated seeing this issue of Slipstream. Boardwalk is letting Lanean use a Cayenne for the McKinney Library concours. Mimi - Post Parade party is scheduled for Sat. July 26 and so far have no RSVP's. A paper was passed so people could sign up for this social as well as the August social at the OMNI and dinner at Blue Mesa. Mike Brodigan - One new 1/2 page ad has been added. It is now renewal time, so advertisers will be contacted about renewing. Mike also requested that we publish our financial statement in Slipstream again as we have done in the past. Keith - Our intention is to have Board meetings at local dealerships to promote sponsorship and to introduce our board to them. Jan - Brought back bunches of stuff from Tampa Parade that we will be using for ours. It will need to be gone through and put in a central location. A separate storage unit was voted on to house only Parade paraphernalia, Matt had researched pricing. Motion to adjourn was made at 9:07, seconded and passed. 8
Happy Hour at Champps by Dennis Chamberlain Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Tinker Edwards, and Mark Gluck The wet and wild weather on June 12 kept a lid on the happy hour turnout. The rain had ceased before we started, but there was standing water on the edges of the Champps patio from the late afternoon’s wind and rain. On the bright side, 25% of the 34 attendees were new members. Jeff Atkins, who could be the tallest Maverick member in history, was somehow able to squeeze into his 1988 911 to come to Champps. Mark Gluck advised Jeff that in a Boxster, height is no problem, because in the three and a half years that Mark has had his Boxster S, he has only had the top up for five minutes. We had some long-distance travelers too. Frances Kwan (1983 911 SC) recently transferred to Dallas from San Photo by Dennis Chamberlain I’d say that Jeff is a bit taller than Mark... Francisco, and Sean and Janet Rackley (96 993) are recent transfers from the Orange Coast Region. Shannon and Roy Bryan (2001 911) live in Corinth, and have a CPA firm in Gainesville. Bryan Bell came in his 99 C2, and Chris Joe (2000 911) also made a brief appearance. As always, the Champps staff handled us well.
