Road Ramblings<br />

Iwas glad when I saw Ted Glover’s<br />

published calendar of more one-day and<br />

weekend driving tours throughout Texas<br />

and the surrounding states for this year<br />

versus last year. Tours are one of Maverick<br />

Region’s most popular events-they always<br />

sell out. It warms my heart because it means<br />

we are using our Porsches as the good<br />

Doctor intended- we are driving them. In<br />

the midst of all the controversy of the Cayenne deviating<br />

from the bloodline of Porsche History, or the lack of a<br />

Porsche contender for the overall win at Le Mans the past<br />

few years, few can argue that for the past 50 years, nothing<br />

beats taking a Porsche out on the open road and driving it<br />

safely but spirited. Little has changed there. The tours are<br />

a fantastic opportunity to combine many recreational<br />

activities- history, dining, scenery, driving, spending time<br />

with friends, weekend-getaway, etc. After all, touring by car<br />

is Americana at its finest. Ted’s tours have sure come a long<br />

way from my first tours as a kid driving to Florida with no<br />

A/C and my family for twenty-hours straight in a 1969<br />

Buick LeSabre. If you have never done a tour with the<br />

region, you must make it your top priority this year. You<br />

won’t be disappointed.<br />

...<strong>February</strong> is the start of our 9-month<br />

high-performance driving season...<br />

autocross schools to prepare you for getting the most out<br />

of yourself and your Porsche. Read more about them in<br />

the following pages of this month’s <strong>Slipstream</strong>. What a<br />

great selection of driving activities and venues. I’ll be at<br />

a couple of the schools shaking off the cobwebs. The<br />

autocross, time-trial, and race track events offer a<br />

wonderful way to get the most out of our cars without<br />

worrying about tickets, accidents, bad judgment, etc.<br />

A special thanks to Jan Mayo for serving as our PCA<br />

National Zone 5 rep for 6 years. Now she gets to be in<br />

charge of our 2004 Parade! Jan’s replacement is the<br />

capable club racer Brooke Van Horne from Oklahoma.<br />

One final thought with respect to my comment above<br />

about the overall win at Le Mans. Frankly, sports car<br />

racing ain’t what was prior to about 1991. I know Le Mans<br />

and the Daytona 24 hours are still among the crownjewels<br />

of motor racing, but since the fractioning between<br />

Grand AM and ALMS and the demise of the old GTP<br />

prototypes, the move has been away from sports cars<br />

towards all the other series. I guess TV and sponsorship<br />

has had a lot to do with it also. I think if there ever was a<br />

time when it didn’t hurt not to be in the top ranks of<br />

sports car professional racing; it’s been the last few years.<br />

I certainly hope that changes and, when it does, that<br />

Porsche is right up front competing for the championship.<br />

The Cayenne issue has also gotten me thinking. There<br />

are those who say Porsche shouldn’t stray from its core of<br />

sports cars and they shouldn’t have built an SUV. However,<br />

the Cayenne is a joint venture with VW that allowed<br />

Porsche to spend far less money out of its own pocket than<br />

other companies have in developing their respective SUVs.<br />

Also, like it or not, many Americans and Porsche owners<br />

already own SUVs or have said they would buy one if<br />

Porsche made it. While I know there was a time when there<br />

was a wide array of 928, 944, and 911 (and turbo) product<br />

lines, I’m not sure there won’t be even more Porsche<br />

model diversity and choice in a year or so. Over the next<br />

year or two it looks like a person will be able to get a<br />

Boxster, Boxster S, 996 Coupe, Cabriolet, Targa, C4S, GT3,<br />

Twin-Turbo, GT2, Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo, and even a<br />

Carrera GT. All you need is the money. We truly are in a<br />

golden era of ultra-high performance combined with<br />

mild-manners and low maintenance, in all cars, not just<br />

Porsches. Let’s see now, if I had won that recent Powerball<br />

Lottery of $300 Million, what would I buy…<br />

And while we’re on the subject of choices, <strong>February</strong> is<br />

the start of our 9-month high-performance driving<br />

season. We have a Drivers Education event at MotorSport<br />

Ranch, Lone Star Region has one down at Texas World<br />

Speedway in College Station, and we have several local<br />

Curves Ahead<br />

Idon't know about you, but I am very excited to<br />

see driving season arrive. I have made a<br />

personal commitment (new year's resolution?)<br />

to participate in several driving events this year.<br />

I have been to a few DE's and a handful of<br />

Autocrosses and Time Trials in the 4 years that<br />

I've been a member, but I am looking forward to<br />

doubling my total this year. There are so many<br />

events offered by the Maverick Region and other surrounding<br />

regions, I would like to mix in some tracks that I haven't driven on<br />

before like Hallet and Texas World Speedway. I can't wait, and I hope<br />

to see many of you there!<br />

Now that I am editor, I feel a little added responsibility to<br />

become more active in all aspects of the club. Things like the Rally<br />

School last weekend and the New Member Party on the weekend<br />

before. Both events were held at Texas Motor Speedway, I don’t<br />

know about you, but I can’t think of a better place to spend the day,<br />

or better people to spend it with. You will see articles for each of<br />

these events in next month’s issue, but you might have noticed the<br />

cover picture that was taken there. I was very excited to have such<br />

a wonderful assortment of Porsches there, including 4 very new<br />

Carerra 4S’s. Bob Lewis even sent in a picture of himself standing<br />

by his car at the party that you’ll notice at the end of this article.<br />

Maverick Minutes<br />

The first <strong>2003</strong> MRPCA board meeting was held<br />

at the home of our new president, Keith<br />

Olcha, on January 7th, <strong>2003</strong>. Due to the wonderful<br />

meal that Karen had prepared, we started the<br />

meeting 15 minutes late!<br />

Keith went “round the room” for us to state<br />

our official position, give updates, and plan to<br />

discuss any issues we might have later. Bill Dugan,<br />

rules committee chair, reported that we will be wearing short<br />

sleeves for Autocross and Time Trial, (see <strong>Slipstream</strong> for more<br />

details). Jan Mayo reported that “Parade is Happening”.<br />

Joe McGlohen reported on his discussions w/Lone Star and<br />

other regions within Zone 5 to be more consistent with corner<br />

worker duties and protocol for safety. Joe also reported that the BMW<br />

club is looking to borrow our timing equipment for their upcoming<br />

Club Race, Keith suggested we leave up to the AX/TT chairs to make<br />

that decision, motion carried. Joe then also reported on the “Flag of<br />

the Month Club”. Motion was carried to purchase more flags. Lisa<br />

Steele reporting for Mark that the AX is on. Dennis Chamberlain<br />

reported on our Happy Hours, their successes, and where the January<br />

HH will be. Next month Dennis will have a proposal on our<br />

mentoring program.<br />

Mike Brodigan stated that we are at our advertising capacity,<br />

with a wait list. What a great accomplishment! John Sandusky, our<br />

DE chair for <strong>2003</strong>, stated the <strong>February</strong> DE is on track w/Park Place as<br />

the sponsor. Matt Platts reported having the first <strong>Slipstream</strong> under<br />

I would also like to remind everyone that we have a members page<br />

on our website (www.pca.org/mav) where you can post pictures of<br />

yourself and your car(s). I highly recommend finding someone<br />

with a digital camera, taking a picture, and sending that along<br />

with your name and any other information that you would like to<br />

see on the web to our webmaster, Michael Oakes.<br />

This is my second issue and I think you will find that it's<br />

packed full of great articles and event information. Everyone told<br />

me that December and January are our slow months of the year. I<br />

can't imagine what the busy season is going to be like, but I think<br />

I will find out soon. There are several events happening in<br />

<strong>February</strong> and March so take a close look at the calendar and pick<br />

the events that interest you most.<br />

Bob Lewis at the New Member Party<br />

his belt was a good feeling (applause from Mavericks attending). Matt<br />

wants to continue to emphasize that the 10th of the month is the<br />

deadline, to please volunteer to write articles and we will see more<br />

visible changes in the future to <strong>Slipstream</strong>. Matt also requested<br />

approximately $350 for upgrade items for the computer. The motion<br />

was made and approved.<br />

Charlie Davis proposed the purchase of a van to be used for<br />

timing and storage of our driving events for $1,000 with an<br />

additional $1,000 for repairs. Approval was given for Charlie to<br />

pursue the purchase. Joel Nannis reported “We have members”. Our<br />

membership is still over 1,000 and we are growing rapidly. Teri Davis<br />

reported on the upcoming Rally School and that we will be holding a<br />

multi-event weekend in October. Teri is also looking to build a web<br />

page for Rally events, so watch for it online. Lanean Hughes reported<br />

the sponsor checks for the <strong>February</strong> and June DE have been sent. She<br />

also reported on the Club Race and that things are moving forward.<br />

Keith reported on the storage area that Maverick Region has secured,<br />

and that keys are being distributed to those deemed necessary. Up<br />

next was Michael Wingfield, assistant registrar for DE. He stated that<br />

he enjoyed “watching Keith work the room”. It was noted that our<br />

new president will be using the acronym TOL (take off line), during<br />

his term.<br />

With no further business to be discussed the meeting was<br />

adjourned at 9 p.m. The next meeting will be at the home of Lanean<br />

Hughes. The Board Meeting is for you, so join us!<br />

Happy Hour at Nuevo Leon<br />

Ihad expected a quiet Happy Hour<br />

at Nuevo Leon on December 19,<br />

since Christmas was less than a<br />

week away. Not only that, but the<br />

annual Maverick Christmas party had<br />

just been held a few days earlier. To<br />

my surprise, we had 42 rambunctious<br />

members, including several new faces.<br />

Nuevo Leon always rolls out the<br />

red carpet for us, and they went even a step farther this time. The<br />

restaurant reserves the entire row of parking in front for our<br />

Porsches, and the lineup of cars this time was even more inspiring<br />

than ever before. It’s a treat to be able to graze on good Tex-Mex<br />

while gazing out the big windows at the lineup. In addition,<br />

Lanean had arrived before I did (no surprise there), and had<br />

arranged for the restaurant to put out enough appetizers that it<br />

was hardly necessary to order from the menu.<br />

The Wyatt’s and the Lage’s<br />

New faces included Bill and Barbara Gross, who recently purchased<br />

a new 2002 Boxster, and Gig and Jeannie Philipp, who<br />

came down from Denton. The Philipp’s were members long ago,<br />

sold their Porsche, and thought that they had to drop out. They<br />

recently acquired a 1997 993,<br />

so we’re lucky to have them<br />

back. We also had several<br />

longer time members who<br />

haven’t attended recently –<br />

including Lisa and Jay Walker,<br />

Darren and Karin Sumrall,<br />

and Carol and Joe Rybarski.<br />

time, but get ready for scotch<br />

Addison, just behind Friday’s at Montfort & Belt Line. That will<br />

Maverick Driving Tours<br />

Due to popular demand, the <strong>2003</strong> Tour Season is going<br />

to be a busy one. The tours will cover different parts<br />

of Texas, so members will be able to experience how<br />

diversified the Texas geography is. It is not just flat.<br />

The Maverick Region has a busy calendar for <strong>2003</strong>, so I<br />

have tried to fill in as many open dates as possible.<br />

However, this was not always possible and there will be<br />

conflicts, which means many times a choice will have to be<br />

made. By having these choices, the club should be able to<br />

satisfy all the members’ desires:<br />

There was a desire by tour participants to visit Big<br />

Cedar Lodge in the Fall of <strong>2003</strong>. Unfortunately, Big Cedar<br />

Lodge is already booked for October, <strong>2003</strong>. So I have booked<br />

rooms for our trip, 29-31 October 2004. The rooms that are<br />

reserved for the club are in the Valley View Lodge and<br />

Spring View Lodge. They also have cabins and cottages<br />

available. If you would rather stay in one of those, just let<br />

them know. If you want to go, call now and reserve a room<br />

Rules Meeting<br />

Afairly informal rules meeting was held at the Christmas<br />

party. The only item discussed was the clothing rule. It was<br />

decided that it’s allright to wear a short sleeve shirt at<br />

Maverick Region Time Trials. All other clothing requirements<br />

remain the same. This is an attempt to align with DE and Parade<br />

<strong>2003</strong> (Tampa, Florida). It should also help me at the Parade 2004<br />

(Fort Worth in case you didn’t know)<br />

Maverick Holiday Party<br />

Alan and Kay Leibel hosted this year’s holiday party and, as<br />

expected, it was a fabulous event. The Leibel’s house was<br />

bursting at the seams with both people (an estimated 100 in<br />

attendance) and food. A stroll down the block revealed a beautiful<br />

collection of fine Porsche automobiles. That, coupled with many<br />

houses in the neighborhood decked out with holiday lights really<br />

helped to emphasize the season.<br />

...the people are the reason that makes<br />

events like this so special...<br />

Nobody at the party went away hungry. The menu was<br />

centered around the famous Joe McGlohen barbeque. Joe<br />

brought a wide variety of smoked meats that included barbeque<br />

beef, chicken, sausage, and ribs. There were a few other tables<br />

spread throughout the house containing munchies like crackers,<br />

cheeses, dips, crisp veggies, and many side dishes. You could<br />

sample wonderful casseroles and vegetable dishes. So many<br />

members brought their favorite sides, it was hard to decide where<br />

to start. Oh - you can’t forget about the dessert table that was<br />

overflowing with sinful goodies. Some attendees were even<br />

caught sneaking bites of the sweets before dinner!<br />

Much of the topics of conversation were bench racing and<br />

what modifications were going to be done to extract the next<br />

increment of performance from our beloved Porsche of choice.<br />

The upcoming driving schools were also hot topics as people<br />

were excited to get their spouses and children involved in their<br />

hobbies. With good hearted kidding and challenging, it comes<br />

back to our motto of “It’s not the cars, it’s the people.” The cars<br />

may be the common bond that brought us together, but the<br />

people are the reason that makes events like this so special.<br />

I would like to thank Alan and Kay for opening their home<br />

to host this fabulous event.<br />

Driver Education Tech Update<br />

With the dawning of a new driving year, some of the<br />

newer rules for Tech Inspection from last year need to<br />

be clarified or brought back to our attention after the<br />

long period of rest.<br />

Last year, PCA National handed down some new “suggestions”<br />

to enhance the safety of our driving events. The most<br />

talked about update was the “Cabriolet rollover protection”<br />

rule. In laymen terms, cabriolet is convertible with a soft top.<br />

All cars with these soft tops will need to have supplemental<br />

rollover protection, as in a roll bar, roll hoop, cage, or<br />

automatic roll bars. This is for all run groups. 996 cabs and<br />

Boxsters have roll bars from the factory. Everything else (993<br />

cabs, 944 cabs, earlier 911 cabs, etc...) do not come with<br />

enough roll over protection. These cars will be required to<br />

have aftermarket bars installed. There are other makes of cars<br />

with built in protection: some models from Audi, BMW,<br />

Chevrolet, and Mazda come to mind. (Check with me prior to<br />

the event if you are in doubt about your particular car.)<br />

...if you are being held in place with a piece of<br />

rope, then your instructor can use that same<br />

piece of rope...<br />

The next update is that cars with soft tops will need<br />

to pass the “broom stick” test. (Do this at home...) Sit in the<br />

drivers seat with your helmet on, lower the top, place the<br />

broom from the windshield back to the roll bar. If your helmet<br />

is above this line, it is not safe. If you are wearing standard<br />

3-point harnesses, there is some slack as you will slip down<br />

into the seat if you roll over. (Again, ask me and I can look at<br />

it during tech. You might try to get in touch with me earlier to<br />

have time to get roll bar installed if needed...) If you choose to<br />

The next update is that these cars will run with the tops<br />

on or up unless the driver and passenger (instructor) both<br />

have arm restraints. We prefer you to not use arm restraints as<br />

when they are properly installed, they hinder in giving good<br />

passing signals while on track. And instructors like to use<br />

hand signals so the driver can see the track better.<br />

The next update is the “Like restraint” rule. If the driver<br />

has a race seat and 5/6 point harnesses, then your instructor<br />

needs the same equipment. If you are being held in place with<br />

a piece of rope, then the instructor can use that same piece of<br />

rope. (Thanks Steve K.) If you cannot afford 2 sets of<br />

seats and harnesses, then run with your stock 3-point harness<br />

as long as you have an instructor in the car.<br />

The last update is the dreaded “Grid Tech”. There was an<br />

instance of somebody getting their car inspected a week<br />

before the event and it passed as it was then. Then they<br />

changed tires the morning of the event, and (uh-oh) the tires<br />

fell off the car while on track. OOPS... They missed getting the<br />

lugs torqued right with enough stud into the lug. So, when<br />

Green and Blue students come to grid, the instructor will<br />

walk you around your car doing a quick check of some<br />

important things. The list is as follows: Wheel torque, tire<br />

tread, empty all of the pockets in the car, empty the trunk(s),<br />

remove cell phones and radar detectors, do you have brake<br />

fluid, what pressure are you running in your tires, are there<br />

any noticeable leaks from under the car, etc. The higher run<br />

groups will be spot checked, but they should have enough<br />

time on track to know what to do..??<br />

This is a driver’s education event. We’re big on education.<br />

It is not the responsibility of the tech inspector or instructors<br />

to keep up with your car. We are teaching and reinforcing the<br />

needed points to help you keep the event running safely.<br />

Learning more about your car and the check points that need<br />

attention when driving your high performance sport car will<br />

only help you long term - on track as well as off the track.<br />

Helping you to become better tuned to your fine driving<br />

becomes grave. For example: A tall person driving a Miata<br />

with a 5-point harnesses and stock seats. If your head sticks<br />

up above the “broom” line 2-3 inches, your neck is in danger.<br />

Parade for Dummies - <strong>2003</strong><br />

Maverick’s private room at the Prairie House in Carrollton<br />

was perfect for the 30+ members that came to talk about<br />

and hear about Parade. Ooooh, What’s “Parade”? Half of<br />

us were in the know and we shared every tidbit we could with the<br />

others that hadn’t had the experience.<br />

I like to call The Porsche Parade “sensory overload”. Do you<br />

turn your head at the sound of a Turbo rounding the corner<br />

down the street? Do you pop your head up when you hear the<br />

distinctive motor of a 356? Does a racecar whizzing by give you<br />

chills? If so, at Parade you’ll be dizzy in a matter of minutes.<br />

Parade is a gathering of 1500 – 1800 fellow Porsche Enthusiasts<br />

bringing 500-800 Porsches. You will see nearly every possible<br />

model, color, option, and condition. Some are beautiful. Some<br />

are so incredible you’re afraid to breathe anywhere near it. Some<br />

of the owners would prefer you NOT breathe anywhere near it.<br />

Some owners welcome you to crawl in, around, and under every<br />

nook and cranny. Some cars are in such dilapidated state you’ll<br />

wonder how it made it from across the state. But it’s there with its<br />

happy proud owner, because it DID make it from across the state.<br />

Meeting people is what I like to go to Parade for. You meet<br />

fellow enthusiasts from all walks of life. And they’ve all become<br />

my very best friends. There are parties, dinners, and social<br />

...I like to call Porsche Parade as sensory<br />

overload...<br />

some of the little details that “Newbies” need to know. Like filling<br />

out the registration form and what’s important to NOT FORGET,<br />

and when/how to mail it. The Rules are important and James<br />

Shoffit, speaking from personal experience, explained why.<br />

In preparation for the Parade Rally, Teri and Charlie Davis<br />

will be having a couple Rally Schools this spring. She explained<br />

what a Rally was and why these schools ahead of time are not only<br />

great fun but good preparation before you go to Florida.<br />

opportunities to visit. If you’re standing in the parking lot with a<br />

quizzical expression on your face or your arms overloaded with<br />

bags, someone will stop to help. A new best friend. You’ll look<br />

over the Concours site in awe at the panorama of colors and<br />

someone will point to one and say, “That’s mine” or “I know that<br />

guy.” Another new best friend. You could be looking in the engine<br />

compartment of a brand new 996 and Peter Porsche will look<br />

over your shoulder and say “Hello”. Yup, another new best friend.<br />

Tampa, June 22-28, we shared these experiences then explained<br />

Many Parades have specific Kid activities and Florida has a<br />

wonderful array of things for teens and pre-teens and little kids.<br />

Lanean Hughes gave us a rundown of these activities and we<br />

introduced Lisa Steele as the Kid Activities Chairman for 2004<br />

Parade here in Maverick-Town. Mike Bellinghausen promptly<br />

sprung up presenting his youngest toddler to Lisa. “Here, you can<br />

have him NOW.”<br />

Maverick Driving Schools - Ladies First!<br />

By the time you read this the first ever Advanced Time Trial<br />

school will have been held at the Mineralring in Mineral Wells,<br />

Texas. It was the warmup for the upcoming driving schools. We<br />

still have room for more students, instructors and volunteers.<br />

Volunteers and Instructors will get free timed fun runs at the<br />

end of each event . . . time and weather permitting. The schools<br />

are going to be kept small this year to maximize our students seat<br />

time. If you have a friend, even a non-Porsche one, that wants to<br />

experience what you already enjoy . . . please recommend one of<br />

our schools to them!<br />

Ladies Only Autocross 105 - LA105<br />

Pennington Field - Euless, Texas - Saturday, <strong>February</strong> 15th<br />

Our traditional ladies school taught by some of our best lady<br />

drivers, many of them class winners at Parade! Guys are there just to<br />

setup the course, work corners and pick up cones. The top speeds are<br />

lower and all of the exercises are designed to help you learn to work<br />

with your car. Extra time is allowed to make sure you can gradually<br />

increase your speeds as your confidence grows.<br />

Threshold braking, slaloms and skid pads will be featured in the<br />

morning. An actual autocross will be setup and held in the afternoon.<br />

This is a fully instructed event and you will always have someone to<br />

help you throughout the day. Timed Fun Runs for workers and<br />

instructors at the end of the day.<br />

Concours Judges Seminar<br />

There will be a National Concours Judges Seminar this Spring at Prestige Imports in<br />

Denver. General Manager Don Adis has agreed to host this event on March 2, <strong>2003</strong> at<br />

the Porsche dealership at 9201 W. Colfax, Lakewood, Co. The seminar is supported by<br />

Zone's 9, 5, and the Rocky Mountain and Alpine Mountain Regions.<br />

The seminar will offer something for everyone regardless of involvement in Parade or<br />

Regional concours. Nationally accredited judges will be used to head teams of apprentice or<br />

first time judges. For the members, as well as the national judges attending, this formal training<br />

is strongly recommended for increased proficiency as a Parade or Regional judge. Club<br />

members wishing to become apprentice national or regional judges looking to improve their<br />

skills are welcome to attend. Even if you are not interested in the judging aspect of it, you will<br />

still learn a lot about your Porsche as a by-product of studying the judging process.<br />

The Judges seminar is not a car care product knowledge class, but you may hear about<br />

various products used by some of the attendees. If you have attended a Porsche Parade, you<br />

may be familiar with the classification of Parade judging. The seminar will involve three classes:<br />

Restoration, Preparation and Preservation. On a regional level we deal mostly with the<br />

Preparation class. This is otherwise known as “the search for dirt”. At the Parade in Boise this<br />

year I entered my ‘84 Carrera in the Preservation class. In this class the judges are not allowed<br />

to touch the entrant’s car. The primary judging interest is the originality of your car. This is<br />

not to say that the judges will not ask you to open everything up for inspection. It’s a very<br />

interesting class for the entrant who has a perfectly stock, original Porsche. It is not a beauty<br />

contest, but you do have to have the car prepared well. I will leave the Restoration and<br />

Preparation class descriptions to more learned judge/members like Dennis Frick, Seminar<br />

Chairman, Tom Scott, Bill Jackson and other gurus at the seminar.<br />

It is my feeling that if you take the time and attend this seminar you will come away with<br />

Why It’s Good To Wear White<br />

Ithink I had a beer in my hand, and probably one already down when<br />

Joe McGlohen approached me during my first Maverick Happy Hour.<br />

He sensed my weakness. Here's a brand new Maverick, trying to connect<br />

with this new group of strangers. He could strike quickly. Me, a corner<br />

worker? Naw, I wanna be a race car driver, like Michael, or Hurley, or<br />

Nigel. No one dreams of becoming a corner worker! "How much time,<br />

what's involved, and when?" I asked, trying to find a reason to not get<br />

caught up in this. "OK, yeah, put me down, I'll do it.” (Well, some day<br />

maybe). It was like anything else, agree face-to-face then get your schedule<br />

really full. It's worked for years on other stuff, like dentist appointments.<br />

As is typical with Joe, he didn't forget. He bribed my wife, Penny, and<br />

I with his (now) famous barbeque in exchange for attending a Flag and<br />

Communication Class. He had apparently worked similar coercion with<br />

others because he had at least a dozen in attendance for his training. OK,<br />

we're trained. We still have time to manage this commitment. Remember,<br />

I wanna be like Michael.<br />

Volunteers? Yeah, Wendy put us down. Club Race? Yeah, we're<br />

"trained". White clothing? It's October - in Dallas! There's nothing out<br />

there, this is fashion-land. Everything white in Dallas is destroyed on Labor<br />

Day. You'll accept light colors? OK Yeah, put us down for the Club Race.<br />

7am on a Saturday? I must admit I got a kick out of telling friends and coworkers<br />

about "working" a car race. Most had no idea this was available<br />

and seemed intrigued by the idea. Being my first time, I really couldn't<br />

explain what I was going to do, so I made some of it up to sound even more<br />

important and exciting.<br />

I found a flaw in Joe's training shortly after arriving at corner 6 with<br />

my fellow workers. I needed to pack enough clothing and "stuff" for three<br />

seasons; hot, cold, and wet. I also don't recall him telling me to bring<br />

earplugs and Mechanix Gloves (for helping push cars that came to "visit"<br />

our corner). I was sure to bring them Sunday.<br />

At 8 in the morning it was windy and cold. But it was really beautiful<br />

to be out in the middle of a quiet racetrack watching the sun come up. The<br />

cold seemed to vanish when the first cars came out on track, as did the<br />

quiet. We rotated duties throughout the day so each could learn all aspects<br />

of working the corner.<br />

Thanks to Joe and Wendy's recruiting skills we had enough people to<br />

have one person available to "float" and secretly watch the cars. Watching<br />

cars on SpeedVision is great, but seeing the difference in driving styles, up<br />

close and personal, is really great. I have a much better understanding of<br />

the things my instructor, Dan Germain, tried to tell me at the last DE. "See<br />

the corner station?", he'd ask every time. "Yeah, so what? I'm looking for my<br />

apex, and turn out, and all cones in general," I thought. Now I understand<br />

why I need to add them to my list of things to do. They (we!) are out there<br />

to add a huge level of safety to this driving thing. Not only do you get to<br />

see examples of a dozen different driving styles, you actually start critiquing<br />

the way each took "your corner."<br />

When the fastest and best drivers were on the track it was the greatest<br />

seat in the house. You could pretty much just tape the Blue Passing flag to<br />

the protection barrier in front of us, because they were all over each other,<br />

passing in places that I didn't think possible, and all right in front of me.<br />

It was all very exciting and educational, and it also gave me an entirely<br />

new perspective of why we joined a group like the Mavericks. It really is<br />

about the people, the cars are a bonus. These workers took their jobs very<br />

seriously. And I was one of them. And when there was a break, walking<br />

around the garages got us "thank you's" from the busy drivers. It was a<br />

good feeling. Everyone in charge of this event went out of their way to<br />

make each of us feel good about helping out. Countless acknowledgements<br />

are due, and great food. But for me it was another of life's experiences, great<br />

people, great cars, and recognition.<br />

I still want to be like Michael, but now I've expanded my interests,<br />

again. I truly enjoyed working the event. Joe and Wendy: Sign me up again!<br />

Parade <strong>2003</strong> - Plan For The Best<br />

HOTEL<br />

The <strong>2003</strong> Porsche Parade will use as its home the beautiful<br />

Saddlebrook Resort, located approximately 20 miles north of the city of<br />

Tampa, Florida. Saddlebrook is well known by golf and tennis<br />

aficionados, as it boasts an Arnold Palmer designed golf course and a<br />

world famous tennis academy. Saddlebrook is large enough to<br />

accommodate not only all attendees’ housing requirements but has<br />

spacious enough grounds to host almost all Parade events, a one stop<br />

shopping sort of environment. The options for hotel accommodations<br />

include a single room, one or two bedroom suite and even a few threebedroom<br />

suites. The resort has lovely grounds, which lend themselves<br />

to walking short distances either for recreation or going from one event<br />

to the next. The food service and restaurant dining at the resort have<br />

received the Golden Platter Award for several years, making the need for<br />

food a great opportunity to try some quality cuisine. All banquets will<br />

be held on property in the Grand Pavilion room.<br />

Look forward to a resort experience that will have you thinking<br />

of coming back in future years to relive the pleasures of the Florida<br />

Parade!<br />

SECURITY<br />

Security at Parade <strong>2003</strong> will be the least thing you must think<br />

about. Your precious jewels of cars will be perfectly safe, as well as any<br />

personal items.<br />

Parade <strong>2003</strong> is being held inside the grounds of an exclusive<br />

resort and community. Entry to the area is controlled via a gate and a<br />

guard employed by Saddlebrook resort where the event is being held.<br />

The resort has a very extensive and well trained security staff, which<br />

are on duty 24 hours per day. In addition to these normal and<br />

excellent security procedures, a uniformed police officer with a<br />

marked patrol car will be on duty every night of the Parade from 7PM<br />

in the evening until 7AM the following morning.<br />

Security will be the best ever provided! Please don’t forget to<br />

bring along personal identification and your PCA membership card.<br />

PARKING<br />

Saddlebrook Resort is a walking village; therefore, the parking<br />

will be dispersed to several lots throughout the resort. All parking will<br />

be assigned upon arrival at the resort. A shuttle service will be<br />

provided to take you from your designated parking area to the hotel<br />

registration area. 24-hour shuttle service will be available to all<br />

parking areas.<br />

Since the parking lots are dispersed, the Concours Prep parking<br />

area will not be located near the trailer parking. Shuttle service will<br />

be provided between the two lots. Accommodations will be made for<br />

those who wish to prep their car at their trailer.<br />

Concours preparation areas will be in two lots with easier access<br />

to guest accommodations. Entrants in the Concours will be limited to<br />

one and one half parking places in the prep lots. After the Concours<br />

on Monday, the prep lots will be opened to all Porsches, not just<br />

Concours entrants.<br />

January 14, <strong>2003</strong>.<br />
