Curves Ahead by Matt Platts, Editor Idon't know about you, but I am very excited to see driving season arrive. I have made a personal commitment (new year's resolution?) to participate in several driving events this year. I have been to a few DE's and a handful of Autocrosses and Time Trials in the 4 years that I've been a member, but I am looking forward to doubling my total this year. There are so many events offered by the Maverick Region and other surrounding regions, I would like to mix in some tracks that I haven't driven on before like Hallet and Texas World Speedway. I can't wait, and I hope to see many of you there! Now that I am editor, I feel a little added responsibility to become more active in all aspects of the club. Things like the Rally School last weekend and the New Member Party on the weekend before. Both events were held at Texas Motor Speedway, I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better place to spend the day, or better people to spend it with. You will see articles for each of these events in next month’s issue, but you might have noticed the cover picture that was taken there. I was very excited to have such a wonderful assortment of Porsches there, including 4 very new Carerra 4S’s. Bob Lewis even sent in a picture of himself standing by his car at the party that you’ll notice at the end of this article. Maverick Minutes by Lanean Hughes The first 2003 MRPCA board meeting was held at the home of our new president, Keith Olcha, on January 7th, 2003. Due to the wonderful meal that Karen had prepared, we started the meeting 15 minutes late! Keith went “round the room” for us to state our official position, give updates, and plan to discuss any issues we might have later. Bill Dugan, rules committee chair, reported that we will be wearing short sleeves for Autocross and Time Trial, (see Slipstream for more details). Jan Mayo reported that “Parade is Happening”. Joe McGlohen reported on his discussions w/Lone Star and other regions within Zone 5 to be more consistent with corner worker duties and protocol for safety. Joe also reported that the BMW club is looking to borrow our timing equipment for their upcoming Club Race, Keith suggested we leave up to the AX/TT chairs to make that decision, motion carried. Joe then also reported on the “Flag of the Month Club”. Motion was carried to purchase more flags. Lisa Steele reporting for Mark that the AX is on. Dennis Chamberlain reported on our Happy Hours, their successes, and where the January HH will be. Next month Dennis will have a proposal on our mentoring program. Mike Brodigan stated that we are at our advertising capacity, with a wait list. What a great accomplishment! John Sandusky, our DE chair for 2003, stated the February DE is on track w/Park Place as the sponsor. Matt Platts reported having the first Slipstream under I would also like to remind everyone that we have a members page on our website (www.pca.org/mav) where you can post pictures of yourself and your car(s). I highly recommend finding someone with a digital camera, taking a picture, and sending that along with your name and any other information that you would like to see on the web to our webmaster, Michael Oakes. This is my second issue and I think you will find that it's packed full of great articles and event information. Everyone told me that December and January are our slow months of the year. I can't imagine what the busy season is going to be like, but I think I will find out soon. There are several events happening in February and March so take a close look at the calendar and pick the events that interest you most. Bob Lewis at the New Member Party his belt was a good feeling (applause from Mavericks attending). Matt wants to continue to emphasize that the 10th of the month is the deadline, to please volunteer to write articles and we will see more visible changes in the future to Slipstream. Matt also requested approximately $350 for upgrade items for the computer. The motion was made and approved. Charlie Davis proposed the purchase of a van to be used for timing and storage of our driving events for $1,000 with an additional $1,000 for repairs. Approval was given for Charlie to pursue the purchase. Joel Nannis reported “We have members”. Our membership is still over 1,000 and we are growing rapidly. Teri Davis reported on the upcoming Rally School and that we will be holding a multi-event weekend in October. Teri is also looking to build a web page for Rally events, so watch for it online. Lanean Hughes reported the sponsor checks for the February and June DE have been sent. She also reported on the Club Race and that things are moving forward. Keith reported on the storage area that Maverick Region has secured, and that keys are being distributed to those deemed necessary. Up next was Michael Wingfield, assistant registrar for DE. He stated that he enjoyed “watching Keith work the room”. It was noted that our new president will be using the acronym TOL (take off line), during his term. With no further business to be discussed the meeting was adjourned at 9 p.m. The next meeting will be at the home of Lanean Hughes. The Board Meeting is for you, so join us! 8
Happy Hour at Nuevo Leon by Dennis Chamberlain Happy Hour Crew: Dennis Chamberlain, Tinker Edwards, and Mark Gluck Ihad expected a quiet Happy Hour at Nuevo Leon on December 19, since Christmas was less than a week away. Not only that, but the annual Maverick Christmas party had just been held a few days earlier. To my surprise, we had 42 rambunctious members, including several new faces. Nuevo Leon always rolls out the red carpet for us, and they went even a step farther this time. The restaurant reserves the entire row of parking in front for our Porsches, and the lineup of cars this time was even more inspiring Photo by Dennis Chamberlain than ever before. It’s a treat to be able to graze on good Tex-Mex while gazing out the big windows at the lineup. In addition, Lanean had arrived before I did (no surprise there), and had arranged for the restaurant to put out enough appetizers that it was hardly necessary to order from the menu. Photo by Dennis Chamberlain The Wyatt’s and the Lage’s Jeannine and Gig Philipp New faces included Bill and Barbara Gross, who recently purchased a new 2002 Boxster, and Gig and Jeannie Philipp, who came down from Denton. The Philipp’s were members long ago, sold their Porsche, and thought that they had to drop out. They recently acquired a 1997 993, so we’re lucky to have them back. We also had several longer time members who haven’t attended recently – including Lisa and Jay Walker, Darren and Karin Sumrall, and Carol and Joe Rybarski. Kristi Kobell and Randle Johnson walked over from Park Place. So it was Tex-Mex this time, but get ready for scotch eggs, bangers & mash, shepherd’s pie, and fish & chips the next time. I’m not making this up. Carol and Joe Rybarski I’m talking about Sherlock’s Baker Street Pub, which is in Addison, just behind Friday’s at Montfort & Belt Line.
